I'm talking about most post-metal I hate, not black metal in general. And while we're at it I'll add sludge in the post-hatestew as well. Be it Isis or Deafheaven or half of what Relapse Records released in the 90's. Oh, add pig squealing brutal/slam death in there too. To me Deafheaven sounds like a poorly done Cobalt.
Gentle Time by Isis is still the heaviest song I've heard maybe if I listened to more obscure Swedish death metal from the 90s i would change my mind
i will say that the first time i sat down and listened to an Isis record, the playing (especially the drumming) seemed way too loose and the songs were too repetitive. it took a few years but my mind changed.
I just spent 7 minutes listening to Gentle Time in its entirety. Its not bad, understand why you feel it's heavy, definitely has that feel to it. Was a bit on the repetitious side. Then again, one of the heaviest songs I heard in the 90's had the repetitious gene.
someone with some chops and some spare time should make a band called Nisis ("Nice-iss") that plays happy music
we’ve covered this before. Electric Wizard = heavy (crushing) Origin = heavy (fast) Converge = heavy (abrasive/discordant) pick different bands if you disagree with my picks but point is there’s different kinds.
I'm only into the hard shit, but I'm pretty sure OP and I have a fantastically different idea of what 'heavy' is. Heavy kinda starts with Sabbath for me. It end in tons of weird places, but it starts with Sabbath.
speed metal, and a lot of 'heavy' metal seems boring as fuck to me. really fast metal is always over so fuckin quick. I like heavy music that builds. I like art metal too though. Obvs Mr Bungle, but these guys are gnarly as well. It's getting faster
there are people who say that for a band's music to be "metal," you have to be able to draw a direct line from Sabbath to it. i can't say that i disagree. although i prefer "i know it when i hear it" along the lines of what was said in the supreme court about porn https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_know_it_when_I_see_it
I'd love some recs for stoner doom type stuff. Not sure where Earthless falls in the genre department, but been listening to a lot of them lately. Pretty in Earth as well, though I would much rather see Brett Netson go back to Built to Spill and BTS become a three guitar band again. This may not exactly fit in this thread, but this cover of Freebird is probably the best cover of Freebird I've ever seen.
Sleep - Dopesmoker Electric Wizard - Dopethrone The Sword - Gods Of The Earth Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley Kyuss - Blues For The Red Sun Bongripper - Satan Worshipping Doom
doom metal is wide and varied, just like death metal. "Doom/Stoner Metal" https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Electric_Wizard/407
i just discovered Terrorizer's 1989 album World Downfall. how i haven't stumbled across before is appalling, i know. this thing was so ahead of it's time, wow. if you would have told me this came out this year, i would have believed you.
Really digging the Electric Wizard album, thanks again for the rec. Gonna take me a bit to settle in on the vox, but really love the music.
The vocals sound like they were recorded under water, but that’s part of the charm. The bass and guitar tone they achieve is masterful. Just crushing.
Definitely don't hate the vox, just not what I'm used to right out of the gate. Gonna spin it again here in a bit, nice n loud.
Is there a psych rock thread on here? Doesn't really seem to be, and Psych rock doesn't really fit with the jam bland or heavy music threads. Figured I'd prolly start one if not.
There was a prog rock, etc thread but it was mostly just people from this thread so it never got much use
