This is kinda of the rub with RBs though, I think he might already be the best back in the league...but the Falcons still suck.

Yeah it's a wasted pick. Congrats on having a great RB on a team that won't make the playoffs

You mean you can't sit in a clean pocket for 8 seconds until you find an open receiver in the NFL?

If they didn't have Robinson, I'm not sure how they would move the ball. And I'm not sure who they could have taken with that pick that would have helped them move the ball more than him.

Being a falcons fan is like riding a roller coaster at action park. It might be fun but it’s more likely something horrible, grotesque or painful happens

I think they definitely should have taken Fields just because you need to be taking shots at it if you don't have a QB, but it's not like Fields' career to date has them regretting passing on him.

I don't think the lack of making the playoffs had anything to do with who they picked and has everything to do with a different decision, which was to bet this season (and possibly longer) on a QB who doesn't seem to be good enough.

That's fair and I agree that pass rusher, CB, OT, WR are more valuable positions. But I think "they aren't winning because with Bijan" is a bad critique of the pick when that can apply to basically anyone available to them at 8 this year

If you get into something like WAR, running backs are near the bottom of all position groups. It's like drafting a center with the 8th pick

Yeah no argument there (although I do believe elite level RBs are undervalued today). Just saying that, say, Jalen Carter, even as great as he's been, isn't getting Atlanta anywhere this year. He'd have been a better pick long term though

    Atlanta sucks with Bijan

Atlanta would suck with whomever we took at 8 unless Stroud fell

Atlanta sucks bc the right tackle is a shit show and the Qb is a disaster at best right now.

Witherspoon or Gonzalez for DROY? Both have been absolutely outstanding for rookie corners.

Carter is a monster but he’s only playing like 40-50% of the snaps right now.

he’s producing in that time but it will be tough to keep up DROY numbers at DT with that kind of share.

It’s so early. I remember during Trevor’s rookie year there were times when Zach Wilson and even Mac Jones were playing better than him and people were starting to whisper bust. I’m not saying he’s ever going to be better than Stroud and maybe stroud should have been the pick all along, but it’s super early to take a firm stance either way.

This is true and a good counter, I think my best argument against taking a RB that high in the first is this:

Assuming you are a bad team a RB will not make a tangible difference on you being bad or good. Usually if you are this bad it will take you 3-4 years to become good? Then you have maybe 1-2 years of that RB on workable contract, if hes been the best RB in the league he is gonna want a lot of money and paying RBs a lot of money is stupid.

If you draft an elite CB/T/DE at that pick you will want to resign them after the rookie deal.

So best case scenario you have that RB making an impact on a winning team for 2 years.

If you are an already good team Im much more onboard taking a RB as a final piece.

It doesn't take 3-4 years in the NFL to go from bad to good. The Lions had a bottom 2 roster in the league coming out of 2020 and almost made the playoffs in 2022 with Jared Goff at QB. The Falcons right now would be the clear favorite to win that division if they had the 16th best QB in the league instead of a bottom 5 QB, in part because of Robinson and what he does for them.

Think Chubb has the highest war at RB or did at one time and he didn't even make 1 win of difference

Rb positional value is so bad and their longevity so short that they honestly need to undo the rookie pay scale for them since we are likely at the end of rbs ever getting big contracts again

Sure. They had the fourth-best point differential in the NFC and lost a tie-breaker to miss the playoffs last year. They were pretty good. Either way, Atlanta in April of 2023 wasn't close to as bad as Detroit in April of 2021. And it definitely isn't bad enough as a roster that it should take 3-4 years before it can make the playoffs unless the QB is actively sabotaging them.

Im slightly changing the argument to be Atlanta specific, but they had the third best rushing offense in the NFL last year (not even top 10 this year,, maybe the OL is the issue?) and a top 10 worst defense. Taking a RB makes ZERO sense.
