Not my first choice (I'm almost always going to prefer going the route of a sitting HC than targeting an assistant), but he's one of the few assistant coaches I'm good with taking a shot with. And given the state of ACC basketball, I'm more open to going with a successful assistant than I would have say in 2017 when you would have had to learn on the job while going against Roy, Coach K, Bennett, Pitino, etc. He's the son of long time NBA coach John Lucas. He has a very strong reputation as a recruiter (I know it's easy to recruit at places like Kentucky and Duke, but Duke fans seem to put him at a higher level as a recruiter in comparison to other assistant coaches they have had), and he runs the defense at Duke (where they rank 4th nationally). He was very likely going to get a high major HC position very soon, either next season or shortly thereafter. I'm not worried about him being able to bring in players. The Duke defense being strong is this season is promising, but I do think it remains to be seen how strong of a coach he is. He was an assistant under Shaka at Texas, and they underachieved during his tenure there. His first season as an assistant at Kentucky, they failed to make the NCAA tournament (it was 2021, so I do think there was some Covid issues that contributed to this), though they were much better in 2022. Duke had also somewhat underachieved from its talent level in 2023 and 2024 (to a lesser extent, though they did make the Elite 8 trip) - they clearly haven't this season though. I would like to see his top assistant be someone with head coaching experience. He has the network to bring one in. It's a hire with some risk, but if he hits, the reward is quite high.
Apparently on the Trilly Donovan discord, he said yesterday that if Jai Lucas got the Miami job, that a) keep an eye on Shelton Henderson (5 star SF who signed with Duke) and b) the Miami Columbus coach could be part of the staff.
Saw the news that Elijah Olaniyi (played on the 2021 basketball team) died at the age of 26 due to brain cancer. Just horrific.
The Jai Lucas hiring is official. Curious to see how the staff shakes out...seems like Andrew Moran (Miami Columbus coach) will get a position somewhere on the staff. I don't take that as a sign the Boozers will switch from Duke to Miami, though.
Meanwhile, Baseball team Is looking quite ass. Probably the worst offense I’ve ever seen in my lifetime, and that’s with one of the top prospects in college baseball in Cuvet. primed to get absolutely destroyed in conference play
The absolute fall from grace for this program is insane. Putting together a regional caliber team in south Florida should be the easiest thing in the world and here we are.
Cuvet is really doing himself a disservice staying. If he wants a chance to develop at all or win anything, he needs to leave. I know it’s nice playing close to home, but you owe nothing to these idiots running this program into the ground.
Maybe I heard wrong during the opening weekend series, but the announcers kept calling him a draft eligible sophomore.
Everything out there is saying he isn’t eligible until 2026 He has another college offseason to do what’s best for his career
Yea, then I'm wrong. yes and no. College football is big business. For 20+ years Miami got outspent and watched all the top talent leave the state. Baseball is a lot different. NIL and money have gotten into the game, but there is still enough talent that you could throw a rock and put together a top 40 team that gets into a regional. Miami is struggling to do that right now. It's a much further fall from grace than the football program.
That was hands down the worst performance I’ve ever seen from a UM baseball team in my lifetime Completely dominated
depending on how these next 2 go, ole Rad might need to do it this week body language is a lot like our last squad with shitmeat
Nah Rad doesn’t give a shit about baseball…wouldn’t expect any moves until end of year Not that I wouldn’t love for it to happen
I’d assume there would be significantly less interest in the job this time around. Still a blueblood baseball program in a hotbed for talent, but JD has done a lot of damage It’s now a complete build from scratch whereas Gino had actually left a bit of talent and recent success in the pipeline
Is your baseball team gonna have a higher score per game than your football team? I think it’s pretty bad that this is an actual serious question
We would still owe him 55 million after the season. Plus all the high priced staff that just got new contracts
The outside corner this ump is giving FSU is absurd. Two innings in a row they’ve been bailed out with called strikes on pitches way outside the zone.
watched that kid run circles around DBs that post 4.4 times Niners draft him to replace the trash they drafted in 1st rd last year
Yup. He cost himself a bit of money with that time, but he's gonna get a shot in the late rounds or as a UDFA.
Sounds like it was between Donaldson and Jaland Lowe and they took Donaldson. He's not quite the dynamic offensive threat but a far better defensive player and three point shooter. The kid from Bosnia (Harun Zrno) is visiting in a few weeks and he's shooting over 45% in pro competition over there. If we can land him, Reneau and Ernest Udeh (projected to be our starting 5) are non-spacers, so it'll be interesting to see who they bring in to pair in the backcourt with Donaldson. Rodney Rice for me is who I personally would want.
