Same here. Almost got 100 solo miles in today but the wind picked up for the last 2 hours of the ride with gusts over 20. With no one to help break wind, I shut it down at 94. The indoor trainer time is paying off big!

Nice finish to the week Dex . Wanted to jump on my bike and catch you today but it rained half the day and there was 20mph winds all afternoon so I will have to catch you next week!

I gave up on compact race frames in favor of a more relaxed endurance frame. I enjoy long rides and then blowing people up on climbs more than I do going fast. If I would have been in the game at a younger age I would enjoy the speed.

I'm fucking 40 years old, you better be faster than me!

Go to a bike shop and have them measure your sit bones and see if you have a proper sized saddle, chances are you have the wrong size as that is never an option to choose saddle size unless it is a custom build.

Even if it is the right size, you could easily need a month of riding to get accustomed to the feel.

Was supposed to be 100 miles today but buddy I rode with broke a spoke. I rode home and picked him up in my car.

I'll be out of town next weekend so nothing long. Intervals on the kickr this week.

Thanks for reminding me, I need to drop my rear wheel off at the shop. After my last climb yesterday noticed a wobble in rear wheel when applying the rear break, think I torqued some spokes and am out of true.

Why the hell does my saddle kill me on the trainer and how do I make it stop?

5 hours on the road, fine. Same bike, 1 hour on the trainer and I want to die.

I don't know if it's because it's a $350 carbon bike frame (fork isn't the stiffest in the world and it has a tendency to oversteer at speed) or how I have it set up (short chain stays, weight too far back?) but my planet x is a fucking death sled in windy weather.

2 Saturdays in a row it's been windy as shit (actually just about every Saturday this year it's been windy), and 2 Saturdays in a row I've almost died when hit with strong cross winds on descents at speed. So, yeah, IDK, maybe I won't ride that bike when it's windy any more.

update: It's not just me. http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13042590

I am concerned about my bike riding tmb brethren. The tmb strava running group has almost twice the miles as us this week.

Hope all is well and you guys are able to ride again soon.

I am part of the problem this week as well. Only 1 ride in. It was a designated rest and fall back week after 3 weeks of build but between an extra work load and family in town I am coming up with only about half the miles I need.

I got dressed 3 times to go ride but then something came up and I am a sucker for my kids that i figured I'd rather hang out with them for that hour and a half than go ride. So we'd go for a walk or something.

So I'm looking to get a bike when my tax return comes in. Probably spend about 400ish on something I can ride around town and out on country roads. Any suggestions on what to look for? I have no clue whatsoever on where to start, what I need to buy etc.

I've got a Specialized Sirrus Elite, my fiancée has expressed interest in trail riding.

Is a suspension recommended for trail riding? If so, can I swap out forks or am I looking at a new bike?

Serioisly though Name P. Redacted , what kind of trails? Like gravel and dirt with slight incline or more of rocks with stupidly steep inclines and declines?

cutig how much do you plan on riding the bike? The reason I ask is that at that price point, options are pretty limited. If tou go the used route, you could find a nice deal on something if you know what you are looking for. I would be looking for something like a cycle-cross set-up.

More of the former. She's definitely more of a casual bike rider and I've spent my time almost exclusively on roads.

Id look around online, like Craigslist and such and see what can be had. Its always good to support your local shop too. Go talk to them, see what they have. I bought a very entry level mtn bike for $500. You can probably get one a little cheaper. Get a hardtail, w/o disc brakes to keep the cost down. Bikes Direct also has some good deals.

I would maybe see if your bike could accomodate a little wider wheel/tire. If so, you could definitely make that bike work by purchasing an extra wheelset and cassette.

I need to get back in shape, and can't run too much because of a knee issue. Riding a bike was recommended to me, so I'll probably start just riding a few miles a day and go up from there. Planning to go up to the black hills this summer so I'd like to try and ride some up there too.

I don't think I have a shop locally, probably about 40min away though. I just have no clue what to look for in a bike.

The bike that Name P. Redacted stated that he has might be a good option, especially if you can get it with more of an off road wheel/tire to handle the dirt roads you speak of. The triple crank will handle pretty much any hill you can throw at it once you get in shape and the straight bars will be a more relaxed feel to help you transition into cycling.

They make a good product, not sure what the equivalent bike is in their line though. I would go in to the shop when you havr time and let them know you are kicking tires while doing research on what bike you want. They should be able to assist you and probably let you test ride.

Just don't be that guy that takes up 5 hours of their time just to buy the same bike online for a $50 discount. The local shop is a great resource for new guys to the sport.

I plan on buying locally rather than online. Support local businesses and whatnot.

What else should I look at buying? Trip computer seems like a smart thing to add to track my efforts.

To me the most important are

    1. Helmet
    2. Shorts/bibs
    3. Pedal/shoes
    4. Gloves
    5. Repair kit

A trip computer is good but is not necessary to start off with. You can download Strava or MapMyRide and it will track your basic data. You won't get the more advanced metrics but to start off with tracking your time and mileage is good enough and you can spend that extra money on a bike with nicer components. If you have a running heart rate monitor or an activity watch it can track heart rate for you.

You could use your phone and save a few bucks if you want; little bit harder to use while riding though. Get a good quality seat, pedal straps (instead of clip in shoes and save $$$), good helmet, biking shorts (they sell baggy versions so you don't feel like you're in a speedo), and a little under-the-seat bag to carry shit in.

Also cutig you can look for a bike with suspension so you have options should you ever want to get off the road. I think most suspensions have the ability to lock now so you don't lose pedaling power on roads.

That way you don't run into my potential problem of having a franken-bike or having two bikes.

I ride about 60 miles a week (when I am not running) mostly street or paved beach path. I bought a hybrid Giant Escape 1. It has been great for me but if I planned on going out for longer rides (more than 20-25) at a time I think I'd look for a road bike. You can get a decent hybrid for about 400. Most ITT will disagree with me but they don't ride at the beach so their opinions shouldn't count.

    1. Helmet never ride without one.
    2. Gloves will save your hands if you fall.
    3. Bike shorts. I wear mine under regular gym shorts.
    4. I only ride 20-25 miles at a time so I have yet to make the move to clipless pedals but I am looking at getting some that have clipless on one side and regular on the other.
    5. Clipless shoes. I am going to go with mountain bike ones because you can use them like regular shoes when not cycling. The clips are "in the sole" and you don't stumble around like a drunk when walking around.
    6. I got an Apple Watch so I wouldn't need to carry my phone and listen to music and track my distance. Obviously that is optional but it is great not having to worry about getting calls and not having to worry about dropping my phone. If you don't need the music a Fitbit or Garmin is good too. If you want you can just download a free app to your phone.
    7. Bag if you're doing long distances.
    8. Water bottle(s) and water bottle holders.
    9. Bluetooth headphones.
