These are the kinds of things that I feel the movie could benefit from if they found a way to expound on them. Again I read the books over 30 years ago, so I totally forgot, but I think understanding the why of certain things helps you connect better.
Explain to me the backstory with the whole witchcraft thing going on with his mom and the creepy lady
I’ve avoided any info on this movie intentionally and didn’t realize it was a multi-parter. How many films are they planning to make?
Almost exclusively female cult that can tell if you’re telling the truth, study and know a lot of languages, have an OP commanding Voice that can make people do what they want. Spread religious prophecies around the galaxy. One such prophecy seems to point to Paul.
Only one has been greenlit. Ballsy to put “Part 1” on this one but I hope it will go on. Don’t know the appetite for going into sequel books.
Spoiler They also control a massive breeding program over the centuries, cross-breeding the families to ultimately produce a male capable of their girl powers. Paul represents a massive fuckup to their plans by Jessica.
It’s hard to envision more than 4 because the story just gets plain weirder and weirder to the point it cannot be translated to tv or movie formats and be popular.
I think the first two have a well contained arc. I read past them but felt it should have ended after the second
The first time I read the series I had a lot of trouble following the story after the first 2 and stopped after the third. Years later I tried again and actually enjoyed all of it. “Well contained” is a great way of describing it.
I only read the series once and had the same problem after the first two and i am a pretty attentive reader, it just spiraled out a lot and i got disengaged. For films it is talked about how difficult it is to translate the first book into a movie, good luck with the later ones
This: Or, alternatively, get an Apple+ subscription and wait until next year. Villenueve is executive producing the series and directing the pilot.
I am guessing this... Dune: The Sisterhood The Pilot episode will be directed by the award winning sci-fi genius Denis Villeneuve who is also directing and producing the new and highly anticipated Dune: Part One (2021) movie. He will also be the executive producer of the entire series.
Loved it. Really need to see it in the theater to appreciate how overwhelming the sound and visuals can be. Spoiler Glad Villeneuve is setting up Paul to be an anti-hero, not an actual good-guy messiah like the Lynch movie. Major point of the books is that Great Men throughout history almost always turn into genocidal monsters.
What makes you say that? I’m not saying it can’t happen, but I don’t recall anything that made me feel that way about him.
But why would that make him an anti-hero since we are led to believe that what he is doing is justified after his family was setup by the Emperor and the Baron, and the fact that it is also for the good of the indigenous people (Fremen) and their freedom? It seems more righteous and traditional to me.
Re Paul and fate Spoiler My interpretation is that humanity had become stale and the species’ genetic survival instinct (sorry, I don’t know what else to call it) delivered a spark (Paul) to ignite the Fremen jihad, which in turn stimulated the exodus of many people out of the empire and into unknown space. Paul, in this case, had no control over what the Bene Gesserit inadvertently made him. I don’t know if he could have stopped it all even if he wanted to. However, I have the impression that he had an awareness that the jihad was ultimately necessary, although he abhorred that he had to be the one.
As I’ve mentioned several times, I read the first two over 30 years ago, so I don’t remember much. That said, my comments were in response to someone saying that the film is doing a good job of setting him up as an anti-hero and not a good guy Messiah like the other film, and I asked what have we seen that shows that so far since we technically don’t even have half a story and don’t know what they do when it counts. To this point in the story, while the Lynch interpretation was super quirky and weird, the key elements were mostly the same.
gotcha. Havent seen the film yet just know the books as they go on dont treat him as really a hero. Didnt know where u were coming from
Spoiler What does it mean to be cursed with prescience, and can you escape your future? I think Herbert was trying to delve into these difficult questions with Paul, a reluctant figurehead for jihad who ultimately turns away from the path he sees laid out for him, a path that Leto II ultimately embraces.
Expectations (book reader) were sky high and exceeded. Saw it at the largest IMAX in NY and boy was that the right call. Went in without reading any reviews or watching a single trailer. Fucking awesome.
Spoiler His freakout in the tent is because he foresees a future where he's become the figurehead of a galactic jihad that kills trillions. It's clearer in the later books but Paul becoming a hero results in tragedy for most of the known universe. Herbert's whole theme is that humanity putting so much power into the hands of a superman like Paul will necessarily end badly.
Spoiler The person most sure that Paul is an anti-hero is Paul. This is most clearly displayed in the 2nd book, which he spends the bulk of trying to blunt the effect of his legacy and the jihad.
You guys are commenting on what you know from the books. My only point is that I haven’t seen anything in this version of the movie yet that says they are capturing that aspect of his character better.
ya, this is getting very GoT/book readers stuff the movie did not really express much of what people have said ITT
OMG this is unwatchable by a person who has no idea about the franchise. I casually watched the original and remember Sting and the vagina monsters but holy shit I made it 20 mins in and had to just back out.
which is fine but as NY said, he's going off of the movie so this thread is part people who only know this movie and part people who have the entire books in their knowledge, which is why I said it's like GoT someone with book knowledge replying to a critique of the movie is complicated bc the two viewpoints are very different
Saw it in IMAX and honestly woudn't have known it was IMAX save the fact that tickets were $23 each. Oh, also it was really loud. Spoiler
Thought Villenueve paced the story well. You'll never be able to get the world development in a movie that you can in a 700p book, but it didn't feel rushed to me. I left the theatre thinking, "wow, there's so much Dune to go... and Bautista didn't ruin it."
for someone maybe not super familiar with the story's perspective Spoiler duncan says he's never fought anyone like the fremen warrior. paul owns a fremen dude immediately numerous times. jessica says paul has "never killed a man." they killed 3 harkonnens 15 minutes earlier
Finished book one about a week ago, saw the movie tonight. Really, really enjoyed it. Visually stunning. I was also pronouncing some of the names way wayyyyy wrong in my head. Already have book two in hand for a long flight tomorrow.
My friend's said they haven't even starting filming part two yet, and it's not due for 3-4 years -- someone tell me he's wrong.
I thought the way they adapted a lot the sci-fi themes of the book to screen was amazing. Por ejemplo: -the shields -the "voice" -stillsuits -thopters (wasn't expecting mechanical dragonflies, but I liked it) -Baron Harkonnen -- glad they didn't go into the pedo shit -worms For some reason I thought Bautista would be a Sardaukar with how awesome they are at fighting. Glad they kept his lines to a minimum
