About one "chapter" away from finishing Dune (the book). Really enjoyed it. Going to start Messiah right after.
So I watched Dune 2 on a plane and haven’t watched Dune 1 because I couldn’t find it on the list. Tragically, I found it right after I finished Dune 2. Now I don’t want to watch Dune 1
I have great news for you. If you watched Dune 2 on a tiny plane screen, or your handheld device, then you haven't really watched it at all. So watch Dune 1 on a big screen with great sound, then watch Dune 2. Free preview week of Max if you can find it.
takes place 10,000 years before the films, right around the time when the Corrinos assumed control of the throne/Imperium after defeating the Thinking Machines. this will chiefly revolve around the early growth of the Bene Gesserit. it's HBO so at least there's money being thrown around for good actors and FX and cinematography.
Random question that I just thought of while watching the new show. Are human life expectancies around the same in this universe or have they found like some setup to extend to like 150-200 years
iirc normal people have a somewhat extended life expectancy (low to mid 100s) and those who regularly consume spice live significantly longer (several hundred years).
Gonna try and read Dune at some point in December. Been saying I'd read it for too long and seems like a good time to tackle it with this new show running
Bro, how can you dislike Messiah? Spoiler Bijaz, knife-throwing infants, Gola Duncan, Paul playing on hard-mode with no eyes and still dominating. Fantastic stuff.
To me, it was just too introspective, which i get it: That's FH's whole thing, but it just wasn't for me. Not the plot but the writing style. I didn't mind it so much in the first book, but it was too much in the second.
I was down a rabbit hole learning about contralto/polymorphic voice and came across the singer Loire Cotler. I had assumed this voice in Dune was artificially created or enhanced. It’s her real voice. #DuneTrivia
No best director nom for Denis is such a fucking joke. So is not allowing Hans to get nominated since he only came up with partly but not all new sound for a sequel movie. The academy are the worst.
HOLY SHIT! Yeah I just stopped reading at Page 15. Now I feel like an idiot for asking the question, but then again not really. It seems very, very few read all the books by Herbert's kid and the ones who read any of them seem to not like them. I fucking love them! Seeing some of the questions about the movie in the discussion that follows it's release are telling. I know the answer to most of them having read Brian's books. I feel like I have a cheat sheet for when I do finally sit down and watch the movies. Hopefully sometime before the end of this year.
Brian doesn’t have his Dad’s story telling talents (few do) but he has done a satisfying job of filling in details that answer most of the questions Dune readers have.
Two more books before I figure this out for myself. Currently in the final third of Princess of Dune. Something amusing about reading through the beginning of this thread and seeing how the movie was cast (which is kind of a spoiler in the sense that these last few books take place only a few years before the events of Dune and now I kinda know who survives the current storyline, but that's my own fault) is reconciling in my mind what the characters look like. For instance, in my mind Baron Harkonnen and Rabban are the Kelce brothers with Jason just getting fatter and grosser over time. Don't know why my mind made that association but you've got to remember I've been following the exploits of the Baron since he was a what the book considered a perfect male human specimen despite the fact he was a raging sadomasochistic pedophile. I also know how and why he slowly became the physical specimen he is in the time of Dune. He surely deserves his burden.
Yeah, the story of the Baron’s malady is one of those answered question where I thought Brian did some of his best work.
