They don't have the defense to win out the rest of the way so all of their team goals are off the table (other than win bowl game). He doesn't really benefit from still playing. I understand the reasoning for not wanting it to start happening this early, but there is no difference in sitting out now or waiting to sit the bowl game imo. This one is probably more an unpopular take than a bad one from Acho.
The usc discourse is so weird. I’ve never seen a team immediately declared “ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFF CONTENTION” universally like this. They are indeed eliminated but that’s because they were never gonna make it in the first place.
a lot of media talking heads probably feel bad they thought USC was a top 25 team because offense go brrrr
He's getting paid a bunch of money to play college football and he can blow his knee out tomorrow and still be a top 5 pick. A lot of guys like playing football and enjoy supporting their teammates. I think encouraging him to sit out because they probably can't make the playoff and/or win the Heisman is a pretty poor take. That said, Acho has had much worse.
Why? If he quits today, he’ll take care of his family for generations with the money he’ll make. If he continues playing, he risks an injury that could keep him from ever playing football again and making that kind of money. I’m not saying he should quit, but I don't think it’s a preposterous position.
I'm always baffled in these conversations. This is a capitalist society. When the world stops revolving around money and starts revolving around being a good teammate or whatever the argument is then maybe I'd reconsider my stance.
The school getting the benefit of his continued play should do that to try and get him to stay. Should probably pay out like $50 million if he cannot play in the NFL.
Do you have any idea what the premium would be for a policy like that? And, the limitations of coverage?
Someone would have to write a specialty policy to adequately cover the loss. He probably has a loss of value policy already, but it probably won’t cover 1/10 of his actual loss in the event of a career-ending injury.
Sure I blew millions of dollars because I got a freak injury playing in meaningless games but you can't call me a bad teammate and that's priceless
The relevant questions from a financial standpoint are probably: has he lost draft status already and will he lose more if he stops playing now? Also, what decision will make him happiest.
These conversations always get weird because it doesn’t seem to take into account that the player loves playing the sport and wants to play
I still think he's going to go #1 overall because his potential is so high but he's been pretty underwhelming for someone who has been coined one of the best qb prospects of all time. Lincoln has done him a disservice as well.
Lincoln has also put him in a position to put up a bunch of gaudy stats over the years too. The Riley giveth and the Riley taketh away.
Maybe I'm just an idiot and am totally misremembering but Lincoln's offense in 2017/2018ish seemed so good at misdirection and really fucking with the defense and their assignments. Now it seems half of his playbook is telling Caleb to drop back and run around until someone gets open. I know they don't have the talent on the line at USC as he had back then but it's weird all the same.
No, he was born with that. I bet in the time he's been there, they've helped him improve his skills and knowledge of the game, along with giving him all the training facilities he needs to get better.
not to get off topic here, but is it just impossible to find what these guys are actually making in NIL and all you're left with are these "valuations" that sites are tracking?
These conversations are way more complicated because of nil deals. Who knows what he needs to do to make his millions this year.
