They have said it is going to air over 10 consecutive years, so I’m not sure how it’s being divided. But it’s not a simple one book-one season type scenario.
I’m not going to sit here pretend I understand the ins and outs of the television business but this seems problematic
Diehard HP fans are pretty universal in their non love of the movies because so much had to be cutout from the book. Especially 4 - 7. I have no idea why a fan would be against this. I'm sure they'll change/add some things because people in Hollywood can't help themselves. But this show will be much closer to the books then the movies ever were. If this is successful and gets good viewership numbers then other spin off shows will happen just like Game of Thrones.
I will watch it and probably love it. The books deserved a season. A lot more that can be explored this way, including some original content (for example, keeping up with things happening at the Ministry, in the wider wizarding world, etc.)
I am cautiously optimistic of it, however they need to have staggering lengths. If the episodes are 40-50 minutes book 1 and 2 should be in the first season. I don’t see how you can make book 1 a 6 or 8 hour experience and not be utterly boring.
excuse me, it's the writer Andy Greenwald who read them to his kid and then stopped once she was old enough. Either way, hiring people like this who refuse to immerse themself in the IP is how you end up with a Dumbledore that is nothing like he was in the books.
Do 8 seasons from Cho’s point of view. Just her living her best life at Hogwarts and having a sweet summer job with her friends, and occasionally interacting with HP, Hermione and the Weasely clan. Like, she hates Snape, but only because he gave her a B in Potions.
That hella chill best life where her boyfriend gets murdered and she has to deal with the emotional fallout of it
I mean, the Diggory of it all will provide a good dramatic arc, maybe in like season, I don’t know, 4?
I think Cho and most Hogwarts students would need intense therapy. 2nd season, the possibility of you being turned to stone by a basilisk, 4th season, her boyfriend gets murdered, 6th season, Jan 6th basically happens at Hogwarts and their beloved headmaster gets killed apparently by the teacher who had been her potions teacher for years, year 7 WW3 breaks out and a ton of the people you know die. There were no classes to train wizard mental therapists but that group definitely needed some.
wait, what? Edit: Nvm, saw it's been covered. Still dumb though. The one thing that I think is important to get right is the essence of the characters so we don't wind up with another angry Dumbledore or bland Ginny.
They took a nosedive after PoA. I can tolerate GoF if I completely block out my memory of the book. But David Yates sucked all the fun and emotion out of the last 4 movies.
I really, really hope this new adaptation works. If they do it right and give it a Game of Thrones like budget it could be amazing. I will be skeptical until it goes into production and is fully cast. Rylance as Dumbledore is a good start. He is a fantastic actor and hopefully has the soft touch that makes book Dumbledore so special.
I know their hit rate hasn't been as high lately, but HBO is not in the business of making bad shows. this moving to HBO and not just being on Max makes me think they're going to do this right.
If any of you have HP crazy partners/kids, funko pop has customizable figures and you can buy house specific accessories/outfitd right now. It’s pricy at $45 per, but likely a great gift.
For all you HBO fans, just look at HotD and what happened with their big time flagship series. They’re not what they used to be.
Amazon or Apple would be the best services for this show since they will throw crazy money. I can’t trust Zazlav.
the way they ended the season was disappointing, but I wouldn't really point at HotD as a reason this show will fail. pretty well-done show. also Last of Us and The Penguin were both great.
This season of HotD would have been thought of as unbelievable if they didn't cheap out and cut the last two episodes. It was perfectly setup for the GoT style big battle in episode 9 and fallout/setup in episode 10 but WB/HBO/Zaslav chose saving money over a great show. Hopefully it won't be an issue with HP considering there are no cgi dragons needed (except for one part in 4) and the movie sets all still exist. Like zeberdee said HBO is still putting out great shows like Last of Us Penguin, White Lotus, Peacemaker, Succession, Euphoria, ect.
Writing issues aside, I was mainly making the point about money and people thinking HBO will just throw cash at it. It’s their most popular show and the new guy comes in and just slashes the budget. Without any care on what it might do from a narrative standpoint.
My biggest beef with the movies to this day was not showing the Chinese Fireball dragon in Goblet of Fire
Apple seems to constantly pump out shows that have a great premise and a stacked cast that falls short of follow through. A few break through and are successful, but comparing them to hbo’s success rate doesn’t make much sense
Agreed on all this. do we know if they are for sure using the same movie sets? I figured they would start from scratch. i mean different actors going through that exact same Diagon Alley would be a little strange wouldn't it?
You know what, fuck you guys, AppleTV has good stuff. Shrinking is the best show being made and it’s amazing. Ted Lasso was really good. Mythic Quest is very funny.
The sets were great, why would you spend a ton of money making all new ones? Make some tweaks or updates to them if you want, but the issues with the movies had nothing to do with the sets.
I’ve been to the castle and went out on the lawn where they filmed the broom flying scene in sorcerers stone /tweet
The sets are a tourist attraction now in the studio outside London where they filmed the movies. I'm sure they didn't keep everything but they kept the biggest ones like the great hall, diagon alley, platform 9 3/4, and gringots. I went a couple years ago and did the tour. It was pretty cool, though I think the HP lands at Universal Studios are cooler. https://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/explore-the-tour/sets/
I just don't see a point in rebooting this so early if you aren't going to completely revamp the world. I realize this is a minority opinion but if you're doing a 10 season epic I want to start completely from scratch.
