I hear you. I’ve listened to a bunch of really good bands and then found out later they were all nazi and it just rubs me the wrong way. I wish that wasn’t so prevalent in metal but it is with lot of those European black metal bands.
it was a limited release. iirc they wanted like $150 for it and some other stuff the shirt that came with it was kind of cool, as i remember

Their style is so cool. The riffing... my god. It's like a tribute to 35 years' worth of metal guitar but also original in its own way.

I’ve been on a big old school metal kick. spending a lot of time listening to Mercyful Fate. good stuff
more crushing Icelandic black metal. this scene currently has a lot of similarities to the Norwegian scene of the early 90s in that there are a lot of bands moving from death metal to black metal, while simultaneously influencing each other. i also find that a lot of these bands have a more dissonant, dense atmosphere than the rawer Scandinavian stuff. sounds more like that intellectualized French black metal (Deathspell Omega) or Ulcerate (New Zealand death metal). it's unique.
Deathspell and Ulcerate are both excellent bands. Have you listened to the album Ingurgitating Oblivion put out on Willowtip last year? They ventured into that same dissonant, progressive black and death metal sound and did a really great job. 4 tracks spanning 52 minutes.

The Mantle is for sure my favorite album they have. The others are all good too in their different ways. I love The White EP when I'm in a mellow mood. I tried to find a place to get a copy of it but not much luck. At least they have all the stuff up on youtube.

I saw At the Gates down in Dallas when they first got back together. It was like a reunion tour or something. They played all the old classics, I don’t think they had put their current material together at the time. It was awesome. I get down on some Melo death quite often.
i also saw that At The Gates reunion tour in NYC. it was 2008, i believe. i went to the friday show, after they added a second saturday date because it sold out in 5 minutes. it was june/july and we were having a heat wave. the air conditioner at the venue broke, and it was probably 100+ degrees inside the venue. people were passing out and shit, but the crowd was so intense. there basically was no pit, it was just a surging mass of humanity. i'll try to find a video.
Nice. It must have been the same tour. It was at the House of Blues in Dallas. I’m too old to get in a mosh pit, I mean I’m not that old but still, no thanks. I’ll headbang and dance around in my own personal space but I don’t like people trying to hit me. We pre ordered our tickets way in advance because I knew it was gonna sell out and it did quickly. And a heat heat wave in NYC. Sorry if I don’t feel too bad for you. I live in Oklahoma. I know about some damn heat waves.
it’s a dope record you Pacific Northwest guys are all weird about the local bands from around there so maybe there’s some reason to hate on it that I don’t know about
What’s wrong with Agalloch? Was it you that knew them back in the day and the dude would just go out in the woods like a weirdo? I was just lurking back then but I remember some kind of story like that from some PNWer.
Nothing is wrong with their music. John is an elitist weirdo though. Even as a metal snob myself I found him to be unbearable at times. Don was/is a great guy.
Ah I got you. I don’t know them personally but I like their music. Super metal snobs are annoying. You don’t seem too snobby imo. There is nothing wrong with having good taste and liking what you like. I like all kinds of stuff but can’t help but make fun of certain stuff at times.
I don’t give a shit I still listen to these songs every once in a while. Time after time if you will... I know they’re really really bad but I still like them every once in a while usually if it’s late and I’m drunk.
Alright no more shitty pop. We set up a show and played with these guys back in the day. They put on a great show. Kinda of emo but whatever. The singer was climbing in the rafters like 15 feet up, no mic just screaming. It was pretty intense. We used to book bands for house shows in the cellar of our shitty rent house back in the day. It was a really small basement but it always got packed nut to butt and the shows would get intense as fuck. Some of the best shows we ever played. We had bands from Finland, Japan, Sweden and a bunch of others play in our shitty cellar until the neighbors finally had enough and shut us down. These guys are from Japan. They looked super bummed when we showed them where we were gonna play. The show absolutely raged though. Later that year they did an interview in Maximum Rock and Roll and they said surprisingly enough their best show on their whole US tour was in a cramped basement in Norman, OK. These guys were cool too.
