And anyone seen Complicated Apes?
The wife and I are in Chicago celebrating our anniversary and tonight we got tickets to Tom Segura at the Chicago Theatre. Has anyone see his new material?
I haven’t but I got tickets to see him in September
Saw him in late November. New material is great
Just watched his new special on Netflix and I’m definitely going to Hell
Nate Bargatze's Tennessee Kid is very good.
i listened to it and it’s one of the better specials of the early year
super composed, well thought out and funny from start to finish
Watched Anthony Jeselnik's new special last night. Not impressed.
I was in line behind behind this destitute mother at the vending machine the other day. She spent her last dollar on a Snickers bar for her child. It was heartbreaking....
I really wanted that Snickers.
Repeat for an hour.
Yea I mean he’s good at what he does but it got so old to me by the end of the show
Jeselnik said it was new material. Nope, was the same as the one he was just on tour for. Funny, but not as much as Thoughts and Prayers and the first time I heard it
that’s how standups work
build an hour, tour it and shoot the special
Uh you know it wasn't airing live right?
I couldn’t finish. I laughed p good at the first few, especially the one about his 90 yo neighbor, I just was done with the style shortly after that. I guess he’s just not for me although I think he’s really funny in short doses
Didn’t think any of it was funny. I just don’t like his style
Not a surprise but I thought Schaub’s stand up sucked. Watched maybe 10 minutes of it before I had to turn it off. I might try to finish it at some point but prob not.
yeah i’m 10 minutes in and this is rough
Did the exact same that was bad
It's worse than Nate Bargatze's Netflix special.
I enjoyed the new Wanda Sykes one
i can’t be that hard on him because he introduced me to andrew schultz who’s shooting up my list of favorites fast, but i did eventually finish his hour and it was terribly unfunny
ill admit i have laughed at him but it just looks like the stage isn’t his domain
historical roasts is fucking funny
Going to see Russell Peters tonight and have passes to meet him.
It’s free, so should be cool. Only watched one of his specials and it was ok.
Should be fun enough
Also my favorite special over the last few years is probably 3 mics with Neal Brennan or whatever his name is.
Will be seeing Mark Normand in Nola during a buddy's bachelor party 11/29. cant wait
Sam Morril is one of my favorite "on his way" comic right now. He just personifies everything I like about randomly going to the cellar on a Thurs and seeing someone badass. He's THAT guy (imo)
oh d’elia just because you look like and play pedos on tv doesn’t mean you should bring those roles to life
hope this stuff isn’t true
Randomly watched Al Madrigal's "Shrimpin ain't easy" the other night. Pleasantly surprised. Really enjoyed it, and feeling a need to watch his previous hours now.
went down a patrice rabbit hole
fuck he was so goddamn funny
He was great.
Bill Burr does a Patrice Memorial stand up charity event every year to raise money for his mom and daughter.
Oh most definitely
Elephant In The Room is probably in my top 10 specials. Just great
Also never gets old.
Glad to see this thread. Feel like I've wasted a lot of time lately watching bad comedy (Jeselnik as a good example), helps to be able to filter it some.
Malaysian dude, Dr. Jason Leong had a pretty good netflix special, not sure it's been mentioned
Have yet to be able to make it through a Bill Burr special.
Burr is hit or miss for me. Can’t remember the name, but one of his earlier ones is great. Think it was Let It Go and also the one before it Why Did I do This is pretty good. Everything since then for me has just been ok
Sam Morrill and Mark Normand both putting out specials on YouTube this year was fantastic. Joe List as well.
Yeah he's ridiculously overhyped. His voice grates on me. He's overly caustic and not usually clever enough to make that work or pay off.
Wish some other guys like Marc Maron enjoyed the success that Burr does
The best comedians usually start down a path of hard social commentary with good humor. Carlin, Hicks, Chappell all moved in this direction and did/due it well. Burr tries this, but it falls flat for me with him.
His hazing of Philly people about the rocky statue while in Philly is pretty good. Burr has his moments, but overall I agree
Spot on. He doesn't have the depth those others do, and his commentary just seems cheap.
woah woah woah easy with the jeselnik slander
Yeah I keep hoping Marc Maron will find some success. Who knows maybe he'll get a podcast at some point.
Maron is as successful as he wants to be and on his terms. I can respect that.
What’s this about Maron not being successful? He is insanely successful. He has one of the biggest podcasts in the world, had his own tv show with his name, stared in glow. Like the guy is crazy successful over the last 15 years.
Just for the sake of argument where would you rank the likes of Seinfeld, Rickles, Robin Williams, Steve Martin, Cosby (raping aside), Louis CK (beating off aside), Kauffman, Steven Wright along those hard social commentary lines?
I see where your going and their all great and historic figures at the craft. Early CK, Wright and Seinfeld are still some of faves. I don’t like the styles or humor of most of the others as stand ups.
In relation to Burr being considered one of the best he falls short as trying to elevate to level of social commentary that the other guys I mentioned. Which is what he tries to do now
It’s because Bill Burr is a whiny bitch
