Yea and he made no attempt to make the corner. Also Joey, if you like him or not, is a proven winner so even if he moves somebody he belongs. There's a bit of Austin Dillon not belonging in the first place to all this imo
So what's the line? Dumping 1 car, which has been done hundreds of times, is ok? But 2 is illegal? Don't get me wrong, I understand Joey and Hamlin getting pissed, but they've dumped plenty of people. Hell the announcers knew what was going to happen bc it's totally expected at some tracks. But now it's illegal?
When the first car you clean out, you're not even to his bumper so you have to way over drive the corner to get to him. So much so that even after hitting him you still can't make the corner so you get passed by the 3rd place car who you then also wreck. I feel like that's a pretty clear line.
lol na I get people being mad, it was extreme, I just think it opens up issues with the next bump and run or the next time someone gets dumped.
Don’t do it to two cars in the span of a corner (or in the same race) and you’re ok. It’s pretty clear.
Everyone said if he gets close he’ll move him, which is a totally valid move, but then as they went down the backstretch they said he’s not close enough, 22 gonna get the win. Then the 3 wipes him out with no real shot at winning himself, until he right hooks someone (biggest no no in the game).
Very new to nascar so my opinion is probably flawed, but the move last Sunday seemed to blatantly fly in the face of what I would consider the sport of racing. In no other competitive racing league, be it cars or track and field or whatever, can you just start picking off the field. Except roller derby I guess. Or Mario Kart.
This is what a lot of drivers said that I heard. It struck at the essence of racing in that it's not racing. It's more akin to demolition derby. Also NASCAR wants this because they made winning so important for getting into the post season so it's one of those where NASCAR encourages this kind of shit through policy but then when it plays out they're aghast.
I don’t know the history of how they landed on this particular format for crowning a champion, but it seems absolutely batshit.
The other problem to me is nascar loves throwing cautions and having restarts. I mean I like them too but that's why we have overtime. Dillon was going to win the race but we have to finish under green (pretty sure nascar is the only major racing body that does this) so we get a restart. Joey might be the best at restarts in the series and of course he beats Dillon off the line
2003 or 04 Matt Kenneth won the championship while only winning one race. It was compounded by him being so consistent at running up front that he won it a race early. There was no drama and it was won by a guy who only won one race. So we got the first "chase" the next year and we've gotten more and more bastardized versions of it every few years.
I'm fine with having winners get in, but maybe you have to say, the first x-number of different drivers are in. Or only multiple race winners are guaranteed spot.
I think the playoffs often don't really capture who was the champion of the sport every year either. There are reddit threads that will rescore chase/playoff seasons with the old scoring. Think Gordon and Harvick would have several more championships under the old scoring system
The guy I was listening to pre race was high on him, said he finds speed he just tends to make a mistake or two per race that kill him.
He's way out performing his teammates and beating a number of guys who are in better cars. And he's 21
Also this USA/NBC broadcast is light years ahead of the Fox one. This double box with KFB camera and the overall camera is so good.
Wild race for 2nd on a related note: 80% of these xfinity drivers have no business in a race car on a road course.
