Have had a nanny for the first year of my daughter's life and this August will be the first time we drop her off at daycare. It's gonna be hard as shit bc she hates strangers and regularly cries as soon as we let anyone else hold her.

When we moved states, the daycare change was rough. My daughter had been in the same daycare since she was 3 months to a bit over 2 years old. She had really bonded with the teachers and some of her classmates. Then when we got to Kansas we had her in one daycare for about 2 weeks, then had to switch to a different one. It was like six weeks in total of absolute meltdown at morning drop off. Fortunately she acclimated and would zoom off to go play as soon as we stepped into the classroom. When she changed to the preschool room awhile back, she made the adjustment in like 3 days.

    It'll get better.

My son who’s about to be 7 still stops after I drop him off in the car rider line and waives till I waive back. He try’s to act so tough and what not and those moments help remind me he’s just still a little boy that needs his parents. It’s adorable and warms my heart. Especially since I’m the step dad and sometimes feel like I’m just his play buddy or baseball buddy. He’s not that close to me like my wife but I love those moments.

At least 4-5 time a week during her nightly shower, my daughter will announce she’s gotta poop. Doesn’t need to immediately beforehand even though I ask.

Also got her first Pfizer shot yesterday morning. No tears and no side effects so that’s gone about as well as I could have hoped for.

This country is so fucked when it comes to daycare. Our kids actually do well thanks to our our teachers but they just raise rates like every 6 months because they know they have a massive waiting list since demand is high in our area. And we’ve never gotten a note or email or anything directly from these owners which made me think they don’t give a shit about child care.

and man I still didn’t think I was as right as I was but then I noticed an owners profile on the website. And again keep in mind this is a bio for a guy who owns daycares

A lot of childcare centers are owned by private equity. It’s just pathetic.

Not shocking but still. The system is so fucked up that daycares are just great investments and you can gouge all you want. Really great. And we know they underpay the shit out of staff and even promoted the director from the front desk basically. So there’s no way they have any well paid staff.

This morning for breakfast I made breakfast potatoes and eggs. No one else ate it. 4 year old ate a bagel and fruit. Then made some chicken sausage for 1 yo that of course everyone wanted so had to make more. Coffee maker fucked up so had to make that twice. I think 1 yo is teething bad and was basically screaming on and off all morning. Holy shit by the time they went to daycare (<2 hours from wake up) had me feeling like V. Don't know how stay at home parents do it with 2+ kids.

i have friends and co workers who have convinced themselves and their wives that they are the ones making the huge sacrifice so their wives "get to stay home" with the kids. Takes like 15 seconds to deconstruct that one.

During 2020/2021 when my wife was still taking time off from having a "real job" to watch our kids at home before they went back to daycare was quite the case study. I got to go upstairs to work and that was by far the more relaxing of the 2 options.

I know we've touched on the subject of toddler flying a few times. My little guy has done pretty well on the few short flights we've done, but we finally had to do a longer one. The in-laws put together a family reunion of sorts in Hawaii. Used every tool in the box and result was basically the equivalent of a bad acid trip for me. I thought I had issues with anxiety previously, but having him not be able to sleep at all, scream regularly, throw shit at people, hit us, and say things like "all done flying" 1.5 hours into a 5.5 hour flight was not worth the payoff. There were cool moments while we were there, but they were fleeting because it was all really too overwhelming. Not his fault at all, obviously. His 5 year old cousin had an absolutely amazing time. Anyway, unless you've proven Benadryl works previously, I'd put that kind of trip off a bit. I'm shell-shocked enough that I'm committed to not leaving my house for the next 2 years unless the trip can be done by car

I'll be calling my representative to propose a ban on kids under 5 from flying over 2 hours to prevent parents from succumbing to peer pressure from their family members (hardship waivers and other exemptions possible through application)
