Last summer, caught a ton of snook off the beach at Longboat key July and August. Always saw them cruising in the surf in large numbers. This year after the freeze, hardly seen any and only caught 2 all summer long. 1 was about 27 inches and yesterday, caught one about 22 inches. Didn't have a camera to take a pic because was just killing time and didn't think I would see/catch anything.
Went out twice recently. Got skunked going for spanish mackerel but still caught a ton of small blue fish. Got a couple flounder and lost the biggest at the boat. Probably was around 30 inches and six or so lbs. Leaving the beach and back to hotlanta tomorrow.
you use a spinner rod or fly rod? unicoi in helen and also blue ridge is the GOAT fly fishing store. guys there know north ga incredibly well.
Went out to my buddies deer lease to get a count for Texas Parks and Wildlife this season, only had 25 minutes to fish his lake out there but I pulled a little pounder out of there with a 2 blade H&H. Feltgoodman just to bend a rod.
Went to fire up the boat the other day and the damn generator is broken. Looks like I'm gonna have to take it in to the repair shop :feelsrealshittyman:
Went down to the keys for the lobster mini season week before last. Got 48 in 2 days and shot some hogfish, red grouper, and yellow jacks. Didnt take many pictures, got a couple with my phone.
thanks. he was barely legal, we never ran up on any big hogs so i got lucky with that one. the only bad shot i had was the yellow jack in the top right of that picture. Got him right in the gut, wasnt concentrating on the fish, i was looking more at the sharks we had circling up on us.
Ok, I've done alright this spring fishing farm ponds. Biggest bass only about 3lbs but some monster shellcracker and green sunfish. Also hooked up with a couple nice grass carp. Almost exclusively fly fishing thus far. I'll try to remember to post some pics after work.
having a fishing tournament with three friends next week. One point for biggest redfish,. One point for biggest trout, and the tiebreaker for most weight. Should be fun.
we were planning to use total weight as the tiebreaker, but that may be a better idea. It's just between friends, but we're a bunch of competitive asses.
I fish at a buddy's private pond in Safford, AL. Any given day, you can pull out about 25-30 bass, with at least 5 or 6 over 5lbs. It's pretty much ruined fishing anywhere else for me. Here are a few pics.
Got out to False River this weekend for the first time in a long time. Caught about 25-30 catfish and 15 stripers (threw those back, no one wanted to clean them). Catfish weren't very big, but I was just excited to be out there again. We went from around 3:00 PM on Friday until 1:30 AM Saturday morning, then woke up at 5:30 AM Saturday and went until about noon. Needless to say, I slept like a baby Saturday night. My buddy did catch a pretty big largemouth though, around 7 1/2 pounds (it's in the second picture).
been fishing several times this year with mixed results. Haven't been able to go consistently enough to figure out their pattern plus the weather has been fucking crazy.
I went out last weekend on the barrier islands but the wind and rain was bad. Only got to be out for three hours with 2 snook caught. :/
Catfish are pretty easy to clean. Two of us cleaned all those in about 45 minutes. The stripers are harder to clean (IMO anyway) and really not all that worth it, honestly. They taste okay, but I'll take catfish any day of the week. I just like catching them b/c they'll fight like a mother. It was almost like cheating when we went out there at 5:30 in the morning though. The shiners always come up to bank early in the morning and the stripers and catfish flock to them. We just catch about 100 shiners in a net and put them in a 5 gallon cooler and fish with those the whole morning. From about 5:45-6:30, I don't think I threw out a cast that didn't come back with a bite. False River doesn't have a ton of trophy fish, but it is stocked.
I'm used to fishing the grass flats on the coast, where the hell am I supposed to fish in Tally? I pulled some nice bass from the big lake in Southwood and tried Piney Z with no luck, any other good spots?
Unfortunately, I haven't gone deep sea fishing in a while, but these are from my last trip: The weedline:
Any tripletail on that line bill? Here's a decent trout from last week. Saw by far the biggest trout I've ever seen come up and destroy a 6" mullet under one of the lights. Trout had to be pushing 30". And a picture of my small saltwater fly box because I organized it last night. Heading out this afternoon to a pond where my buddy caught an 8lb largemouth last weekend. Never caught one over 4lb on my fly rod so I'm hoping to change that today.
No tripletail, just big snapper and dolphin. We've been catching gator trout out here (Sarasota area) lately, and they've been massive lately.
Went offshore this week in Mississippi. Had a couple of nice catches, although the reds weren't biting like we'd hoped, but this was definitely the most interesting catch of the day, and it was the first. About a 65 pound bull shark. Legitimate man-eater. And we caught it during shark week.
My niece's boyfriend works for a local concrete company and the other day he was shooting the shit about fishing with a driver that works at a local quarry. He ends up getting an invite to come down after work and give it a shot. He calls me up and asks if I wanna roll with him so I agree to go check it out. We fished for 90 minutes and I caught 9 bass... 5 on a texas-rigged worm, 3 on a diamond shad Rat-L-Trap, and 1 on a chartreuse spinnerbait. Biggest was probably 3.5 lbs but none smaller than 1.5 Just an amazing fishery and after chatting with the dude, I learned that it does not get fished much at all by the employees. Can't wait to get out there on a saturday morning and do work from my float tube.
I've always wanted to try fly fishing, especially on the coast. Here is my personal best trout, 27.5"
I went down the Saint Marks river to where it empties in the gulf a couple weeks ago and caught a few ~24" Spanish. It was nice to finally get out there.
Time for this thread to be bumped. Anyone fish out of kayaks? Was thinking about buying one this year to do some inshore and close to shore stuff and not have to worry about gas. Also went and got some more tackle this weekend.
The picture isn't the greatest, but I fished here towards the end of last summer. It's the Great Pee Dee down in the lowcountry of SC. We caught a mess of Mollies and Warmouths, but the scenery made the trip more than worth it. Hopefully my Dad will bring his boat up so we can fish Hartwell some. I'm pretty excited to start fishing again.
One thing I'm pumped about my honeymoon is that I should be able to get a good day of fishing in. Tuan/Mahi/Wahoo or something depending on what island I go to and what month. I'll probably go out just with my soon to be wife, so I'm sure my arms will be beat since she'll be tired after 3 minutes of fighting a fish.
I want to start fly fishing this summer (fresh and salt). Couple questions: 1. How should I go about learning the technique? I know lots of people learn by practicing in a backyard, any places online that are particularly good for teaching? 2. Can I get a rod under $100? I don't want to drop good money until I decide whether I really like it or not. Can I buy used?
Can't believe I haven't seen this thread, but love that a few of you have experienced Texoma. Striper fishing on that lake is a totally different experience. FISH ON! I grew up on Texoma and occasionally go over to the Red River for some fishing. Too many Mexicans and Asians on the river fighting over fucking drum and striper. Texoma is a very underrated smallmouth lake thanks to the striper and the massive amount of people on the lake during the weekends.
I'm sure there are plenty of tutorial videos on youtube and elsewhere online that you can find. I am self taught and it really doesn't take very long to pick it up, especially if you are just fishing for bass/bluegill and not wary species that require you to make extremely accurate casts with delicate presentations. Lawn casting is fine but I wouldn't do it with anything other than a cheap line because the blades of grass and other lawn debris can create tiny cuts in your line over time that can effect the lines durability and castability. You can get a rod for under $100 but it will suck ass. Spend a tiny bet extra on a TFO and you'll get a great rod for the price with a lifetime warranty. I'd start with an 8'6" 4 piece 5wt Lefty Kreh Pro Series TFO http://www.templeforkflyrods.com/products/rods/professional.html - $149.95 I've got two TFO's (mostly use them as backups for my nicer rods) but still highly recommend them. You can't get a better bang for your buck and they outperform all other rods in similar price ranges by a wide margin. You can certainly buy a used rod on ebay or elsewhere but the warranty will be voided if the previous owner already registered the rod. Got this redfish (and several others) on the flats yesterday
Thanks dude. Ill start with my boat on freshwater but my end goal is going for reds on the coast. Looks like a blast. The bass are on their beds in preseason stage, should be fun to try it out there for the first time
Unless you're fishing for fish that will really test your limits I think you should spend about twice as much on a rod than a reel since you will most likely won't even use the reel to bring your catch in and a better rod will make casting much easier and more enjoyable. Redington makes some pretty solid freshwater reels in the $75 or so range. Ross and Orvis (among others) also make good freshwater reels that won't set you back too much. Orvis has some pretty good combos that come with rod, reel, backing, line, and carrying case. This is their entry level outfit and it will be plenty for perfecting your craft in ponds and local freshwaters. http://www.orvis.com/store/product....8&group_id=23817&cat_id=23818&subcat_id=23819 Bass have started the prespawn here as well. I picked this one up on my 3wt with 1.75lb tippet a couple weeks ago.
Nice red BH. You catch that on fly? I'm gonna be buying one of these in the next few weeks. Probably be doing a lot more inshore stuff this year. Won't really have time to do a lot of tournaments this summer with school.
