Had to go Hog Fathers. It was really pretty good. Had to use them because Spring House took too long to get back with us. HF had everything ready to go and I just set it up myself. If you use warming trays/racks, they make you put down a deposit and you get half back when you return which is reasonable. The pulled pork was good, fried chicken much better than expected, but the sausage was sweet Italian with peppers and onions. I expected smoked sausage, should have known better for a PA bbq joint. That said, it was really good sausage and I like that, just would've gone ribs if I'd have known that. Sides were excellent. Total for 35 people with an extra full tray of sides was like $800 w/tax, which is very in-line with everyone else I checked out.
Couple buddies and I are flying in for the FSU game next week. What areas should we hang out at? Any bar and restaurant recs for Friday night and game day would be appreciated. Perhaps a breakfast spot for Sat AM?
Bias and conflict of interest aside, Grist house has repeatedly been voted best brewery in Pittsburgh. Make plans for devine to meet up with you and then ghost you
Friday night dinner: Soju (no reservations unless 8+) Gaucho Altius if you want wings and a sports bar go to bigham tavern but it gets packed Avoid the south side like the plague for bars. My favorite spot to go out is stinkys in Lawrenceville, then there are other places close by you can go to. North shore has some good spots to bar hop. Shortys/toms watch bar/southern tier. All right between Heinz and pnc park breakfast Saturday at Pamela’s diner, Kelly O’s
Thank you good sir. Just what I was looking for. Any suggestion on what area we should stay? Looks like we will have to end up going to the airbnb route.
If you can get a hotel north shore would probably be your best bet between bars and Heinz being right there. strip district is an awesome place for Saturday/Sunday morning/day time shopping and food. Lots of cool places. Just not many bars at night besides Coop’s which can be douchey Airbnb from what I’ve seen mt Washington is probably your best bet. Altius and bigham tavern are up there. Best views in the city and short Uber/incline trip to the city
Still has original Primantis which is a good novelty, wholeys, and my friend swears by Papa J’s pizza. Plus the best yinzers t shirts in the game
I went to that original primantis location the first and only time I went to Pittsburgh about 15 years ago. Enjoyed it. This will be everyone else’s first trip to Pittsburgh, so I feel like they have to try primanti bros.
Is Roland’s decent anymore? It has a history in the strip and used to be a great Friday starting point, but I’ve been away a long time.
Definitely go up to Mount Washington if you have first time visitors. Great views of downtown while you eat/drink.
It’s alright, Luke Wholeys is better if you’re going for seafood. Neither are worth eating or drinking at for out of town guests imo. also when I said Wholeys earlier I referred to their market down the street, that place is with stopping in edit just realized i mixed up who I am responding to and I’m sure you know what I meant
The strip: Luke Wholeys is good. The original Wholey’s store down the street is a cool walk through and they have amazing sushi there (not sure if same sushi chef is still there but he was great). Strip has a bunch of new things to do in the old terminal produce building that’s been redone. iron born pizza is very good Detroit style pizza if you like that type. Cinderlands brewery is decent in old spaghetti warehouse location Danoia’s is very good to excellent. For the most part, I’d agree that it is best for a late morning/early afternoon stroll to people watch and such. I’d lean toward Deluca’s over Pamela’s for breakfast but that’s because I prefer the hole in the wall greasy spoon breakfast place. Both are great tho. Id do gaucho downtown for sure, it’s fantastic.
well I think a pizza from fioris is a must but I thought that had been covered in this thread already. If not, yes, fioris pizza.
Gaucho’s is fantastic, we have gone there the last two years when we went to the Steelers kids football camp.
Is Piccolo Forno still good? I ate there on a few trips back home for conferences a few years back and it was fantastic. Grappa bar next door was also cool.
Yeah it’s simple to get a card and there’s a bunch of shops around to buy from with a card but all I was saying is you do need the card
Gauchos for lunch Friday. Gi-Jin or whatever the sushi place is for dinner. Saw JJ and TJ watt there. Saturday morning Irish coffee at De Fer in the flats. Primanti Bros and two red ales at 830am. Pamela’s was too packed. Gauchos for a quick sandwich before tailgating. Tako for dinner Saturday night. First flight out this morning. Great time.
