Two things are true: Guaranteed bids for anything other than a conference champ is a dumb and stupid idea. The B1G rules and its teams are very good.
So if they are going to get 4 auto bids that means they plan to get rid of CCGs? What’s the point of a team taking the wear and tear on their team for a game that’s not needed to get them into the playoffs. I don’t think seeding and having the bye week matters that much if your team doesn’t have to play a 13th game every year imo.
You are underestimating how much tv and leagues like money Instead of eliminating CCGs, they'll probably go crazy and have 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6, and 7 vs 8 to determine gets their 4 auto bids The ratings/tv revenue would support this too.
fair point, I didn't fully think it through but the idea of them adding more games wouldn't be shocking. I just can't see the B1G or SEC willingly giving up their CCGs
you could use a normal seeding too 1 vs 8 2 vs 7 3 vs 6 4 vs 5 winners get auto bids. loser is eligible for at large
oh Im sure the presidents don't care bec even with NIL college players are just cheap labor to them. But as a coach I'd be annoyed that two conference foes that got to just sit at home and rest don't have any real risk of missing the playoffs. Remember half the teams in CCG are going to lose and still have to play week one of the playoffs. So those teams will have to play 17 games in order to win it all. Thats crazy.
Can we fast forward past the part where the G5 gets shown the door, then eventually the ACC and Big 12 until the part when they turn their bloodlust on each other.
I think the most likely long term scenarios are - three 20ish team conferences with the Big12/ACC mashup being the lowest revenue one or - two 30ish team big/sec conferences with unequal revenue distro or - 60ish teams just break away into one group, negotiate tv as a block, unequal revenue distro, return to regional divisions within it (ideal but less likely) either way it’s hard to see G5 having a seat at the table for a whole lot longer
My thought is that your last scenario will be closer to it than the others. The second one is next closest and might actually be the most feasible as the B1G and SEC probably don’t want to give up their identities. In this scenario I’m not sure they expand to 30 though.
it all depends on price, if the B1G and SEC can get Big12 teams at 30 million they will. my hope is they’re seeing some of the disinterest as we get away from regional rivals and find a way to get back to that
I wish this were true but the tv ratings numbers keep going up and up, likely emboldening them to do more dumb shit. Maybe we should boycott the sport
that is true but I think I remember reading a lot of leaders were shocked at the blowback over the P12 dying so I think it’s at least on some minds. end of the day money talks tho
I don't know if that's necessarily true about the ratings. Maybe they're squeezing all they can out of the stone of the regular season but apples to apples the trend line isn't up. Last year might be an exception but I bet that's largely attributable to the novelty of Texas in the semis and Michigan/Washington in the finals instead of the same shit we've been getting for a decade. Spoiler for huge chart Spoiler
I was talking about regular season stuff where I think it’s been up. Playoff other than last couple years has been a ton of really bad games
yeah the blowback will be forgotten reaaaaall quick when an extra 30 mil per team is dangled or some such
harder to find anything other than self-promotional one-offs but concentrating the product into one marquee matchup at noon, one at 3:30, and one at 8 all on different channels is a great way for everyone to claim success while starving competition in those slots.
Look at this weeks slate of games. Theres no way sacrificing a full inventory of 60ish schools to have a Georgia-Bama type game every month or so is worth the bottom line. But these people are morons and also think we want to watch pickleball and putting pat macafee on tv will save their cord cutting problem.
Too late but whatever, it's where we belong. Will be great to renew some old rivalries. Had a chance to go in the 2000s but our AD was so bitter about being left behind by the original WAC he turned it down
big/sec are gonna get 8 or 9 bids every year anyway, so theyre basically ruffling feathers here for no good reason honestly surprised the sec is even bothering with this - they'd be able to get 6 in plenty of years if they configure the schedules right
My guess is they (the TV execs) don't care that much about the diehard CFB fan and are more interested in trying to get to the casual American sports fan. Some guy in the middle of the country that isn't interested in watching Oregon-Cal but they'll watch Oregon-Michigan.
Yeah they basically think they’re creating a zany nfl for college fans but that makes no sense in practice.
Kind of same vibe, though I miss Majerus on the sideline in basketball for Utah and the football games against BYU
