the mission was by far the most interesting place to walk around, also the best food luca ravioli co is like something out of a time machine
not nearly as much as I would like. Dolores Park was awesome but I believe that's on the western edge I had to make several trips between my place and a UHaul facility over on Bryant St which I believe was on the northeastern fringe. I told Google Maps to avoid highways and tolls and ended up going back and forth via Portola Drive near Twin Peaks. Good grief the views from that windy ass road were just amazing. And then you empty out onto Market St into The Castro. So sweet
Agree with this 100% - getting a steak in SF almost feels like a waste to me given the absurd quality of restaurants to choose from out there. Saison may be the best restaurant in the country.
There's a lookout at the top of twin peaks, near the base of Sutro tower. You can stare straight down market (among other things). Usually pretty busy but worth it once.
the blueberry cake donuts at Twisted Donuts on Noriega St You can get great coffee and donuts there and easily walk over to the beautiful tiled steps mosaic at 16th Ave and Moraga St. Those steps take you up near the entrance to Grandview Park where the views are stunning. If you're looking to entertain a girl with an under the radar morning activity, that's a good move want to watch some games after an afternoon in the park? Chug Pub on Lincoln Way is a sweet spot. They seem to contract with outside food vendors but they serve good tacos/burritos and have a good number of TVs last weekend I went to Taqueria El Farolito pretty late at night. Holy shit that was fantastic. Next day I hung out in Mission Dolores Park again before thoroughly checking out the Mission Dolores church itself. My favorite part about cities like Boston, Chicago, DC, NYC, Philly, and San Francisco = the overwhelming amount of bad ass architecture. So that was a really cool afternoon. Walking around with a vape pen (the Grape Ape cartridges at The Apothecarium in The Castro are absolutely dynamite) and staring at all the amazing architecture here blueberry pancakes for lunch at 1428 Haight . I also really like Hippie Thai Street Food right next door. Call in an order and bring it over to The Panhandle, which is an amazing place to sit and read while sipping on some coffee or tea
I’m still getting emails from Apothecarium and Harvest off Mission a year later. Really liked Woods Cervecería on the corner of 18th and Church by Dolores for drinks. Didn’t try the empanadas but they looked legit. Zazie’s, Luke’s Local, and La Boulangerie in Cole Valley were always good (latter two are grab-n-go, not so much a dining option). Outerlands in Outer Sunset too.
It’s the only one I ever went to because I lived 2 blocks away I had a nice routine where I’d go and get some edibles, eat a couple, do my shopping at Whole Foods and then they’d start kicking in right as I got home and put my food away.
Had breakfast at Pork Store Cafe on Haight St for today's meal. Wowww that place is great for breakfast/lunch
I love that place! Try St Francis Fountain in the Mission, legend is this where the 49ers were created by their original owners. Then after you can cruise 24th St and do the mural tour which is pretty badass
Richmond Republic Draught House on Clement St has great wings But San Tung on Irving in the Sunset blows all other wings out of the water. Wow they are insanely good Arguello Market has a great deli that makes awesome sandwiches. Wonderful place to hit up before a USF baseball game
I am obsessed with the wings at San Tung. They're probably the best thing I've ever eaten Had my meal at Velo Rouge Cafe this morning and met someone who is gonna teach me some bike maintenance skills. There are sooo many good breakfast options near the USF campus. What a wonderful area Harvest on Geary is now my favorite dispensary. Incredible flower at great prices Place is closing so gonna try to go this weekend
CatHead's BBQ in what I believe to be the SOMA area is really really good, St Louis style If you are on Divisadero, you should try Brenda's Meat and Three. They have a great spicy chicken sandwich Eddie's Cafe is also on Divisadero, a little cheaper from what I could tell but just as awesome Cole Valley is a quaint area (Kezar Stadium is soo close) and has some awesome spots. Cafe Reverie is a great weekend breakfast spot. Luke's Local has some amazing deli sandwiches, they were mentioned earlier and are legit Sticking to my diet in this city can be tough
Been here since two Thursdays ago and your city is as close to utopia as I've seen in the US. My first time here and I hit up: HRD House of Prime Rib Bite Red Hill Station Farallon The Chinese spot across from San Tung bc ST was too busy :( A couple of spots in Sausalito RT Rotisserie Tacolicious Grove Today is my last day and looking for a lunch recommendation within a mile (walking distance) of the Marriott Marquis. Open and adventurous eaters down for anything and we want to keep it around $100 which should be easy since we won't be drinking.
Fresh Brew Coffee on Bush for Bahn Mi. It will blow you away. Weird name for the place and it’s just a cafe, but owned by a Vietnamese family that makes maybe the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten. Quickish walk from MM and very inexpensive (might as well order a few sandwiches to try and just save the leftovers or give them to a bum).
It's tempting to tag blackterno in here so he can regale you all with his horror stories of the leftist slum where you can't take two steps without hitting a needle.
Anyone opposed to making this the general SF discussion thread? Couldn't find a thread dedicated to The City and if Nashville can have one I don't see why this truly amazing place shouldn't Would love to post a photo dump and some ideas for activities to do while visiting
moved into my apartment two months ago yesterday and this is easily my favorite place I have lived. Huge photo dump below you will notice I am obsessed with the Transamerica Pyramid Spoiler top of the steps at 16th and Moraga. Sunset District to the Pacific Probably more people in this picture than in all of Wyoming. Twisted Donuts before! Transamerica Pyramid in the background with One Maritime Plaza to the left. Absolutely love both buildings, the latter reminds me of something you would see in Chicago on sunny weekend mornings I am going to start taking the L-Taraval from my place to the Embarcadero and then walking to this great courtyard at 1 Maritime Plaza (right near some comedy place called The Punch Line). It's got some solid shade and it's super quiet, a great place to read a book while still being close to the action looking up North Beach area I believe? Promise I wasn't getting a "massage" from the top of the steps at 16th/Moraga, go up a little more to the top of Turtle Hill where you get great views from Grandview Park I love how densely packed this city is. And how from higher elevation you can clearly see distinct neighborhoods like here you have the Sunset and then the park and the Richmond. So different from what I grew up with where everyone is sprawled the hell out I walk around the Financial District looking straight up every single weekend. Such an easy mark for panhandlers in cities with elite architecture (not necessarily saying the Salesforce Tower is elite architecture) Salesforce Tower in the sun is pretty cool. It's a different building depending on the time of day and the weather, which is pretty cool sunset looking west down the street from my place I love how hipsters adore Sutro Tower. I like using it to get my bearings when I am lost and on foot or on my bike tiled steps at 16th/Moraga Painted Ladies rainbow over the Pacific from my backyard 1 Maritime Plaza looking over the Sunset and park to the Richmond and Golden Gate in the distance top of those tiled steps again the Mission Dolores Bay Bridge, obviously love being so close to the L-Taraval downtown through the trees at Buena Vista Park top of the tiled steps shit is so green right now after all that February rain. We have an elite city hall btw Mission Dolores is great view across the bay from Cal's club level in their football stadium
ha cut me some slack you know I'm not the brightest poster here from the Titans thread and I am still new to The City edit, just did some research and holy shit at the list of big time acts who have gotten their starts there. My comment is pretty hilarious in hindsight
got a friend coming to town in a couple weeks and am so stoked to bring them to the following places. Would be open to more suggestions for a couple guys in their early 30s who don't drink but otherwise love being out and about: - Palace of Fine Arts - Yerba Buena Gardens - Alamo Square - Mission Dolores Park - Coit Tower and the Presidio - Crissy Field and Fort Point - Ocean Beach (watching surfers) and Marshall Beach (views) - Golden Gate Park (Strawberry Hill, Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, deYoung Musuem and Academy of Sciences = and that is just scratching the surface) - Land's End Lookout - hopefully concerts at The Independent and The Chapel
That’s a good start maybe rent a car and check out the Marin Headlands and work your way to West Marin? Check out Stinson, Bolinas and work your way to Bodega Bay and grab a bite to eat in downtown Petaluma before you head back down the 101, that’s a beautiful rural area miles from SF
Planning a California trip for myself and the Mrs. in July...neither of us have been so we’re planning on Napa, Sonoma, SF, Yosemite, then driving down to LA. Will definitely be checking out the restaurant recs in here but if anyone has recommendations on activities beyond the obvious (Alcatraz, fisherman’s wharf, full house, eating rice-a-roni straight from the pan), they’d be greatly appreciated
Ate brunch at Brendas this past Saturday. Got the spicy chicken sandwich and it was great but the pickled watermelon rind that came with it really added the good touch. Crawfish beignet was fantastic as well.
that is an awesome coincidence. Hope you're doing well man after researching it, that Fresh Brew Coffee recommendation is pretty high on my list of places to go. I've also been told I need to thoroughly check out the array of Vietnamese places in the Tenderloin. Seems like there are tons of good ethnic spots around there Rusty's Southern also looks like a spot I need to hit up. If they have grits on the menu, I want to go
I live up in Napa so I try to pop into SF as much as possible. A buddy from high school lives in the city and a bunch of high school friends came in town for the Predators-Sharks game this past weekend so it was a good reason to get down there for the weekend. Every time I go to San Fran I want to move there more. Such a fantastic city. All is good and I hope all is well with you
I'm gonna be out at Silverado Resort in early April. Any recommendations for cool hikes near Napa or a really good burger?
I'm really liking the Korean BBQ here. Brothers Restaurant on Geary in particular, found it after leaving Harvest one day. I really love Geary Blvd btw. Has a ton of character and I like how I can walk from the Clement St/Richmond area, past the USF area and all the way downtown Just registered for Bay to Breakers. Looks like that is a total shit show. Been crushing my runs since I got out here on these hills Going to be hitting up a ton of MLB games now that I live in a city with a MLB team of its own AND another one just across the bay. Amazing region
Bay to Breakers used to be epic but now they restrict a lot of the shenanigans but still worth checking out. You going to check our Outside Lands this year ?
I don't think I can swing Outside Lands given the lineup. I prefer going to single shows at intimate venues over big festivals where I only like a handful of the acts. The Chapel and Independent are great I did not know Harding Park is hosting the 2020 PGA Championship. That is gonna be sweet
L-Taraval to Civic Center. Then hop on a BART train to the Coliseum. It's incredibly easy and affordable to get over to A's games
For burgers in Napa I would recommend Angele or the Palisades Saloon Lamb burger. Up north in the valley is Charter Oak which has a pretty simple but good burger. Farther up in Calistoga(worth the drive scenic wise) is hydro grill with a good one. Gotts is another spot with burgers that people really get off to. For hikes I recommend Skyline Park($5 entrance) or Westwood Hills park. Fun to just wander around both places and they have good views. Last year you could see serious scarring in Skyline from where the 2017 fires ravaged through it. Up north there is a random park and hike spot in front of parradux winery that has great views of the valley but is a fairly short hike. I recently did a hike in Calistoga that was great but I forget the name of it but will check with the folks I did it with. There is a winery called Quixote Winery that was designed by Friedrich Hundertwasser thats is pretty cool to see. Its the only building he designed in North America and is a gem amongst a lot of stuffy wineries in the area. No need to get a tour or anything. Many people just go up and park and take a quick look at it and, at least when I worked there, nobody who worked there cared if you just checked it out. Not a whole lot of actual building to check but neat to see and its tucked right under the Napa palisades which is a sweet rock formation that has waterfalls form throughout it if it has recently rained.
awesome info. Thanks a ton was in Palo Alto all day last Saturday and before leaving I checked out the Dish Walk. That's a really nice easy loop with some good views of the Stanford campus and the surrounding Bay Area on clear days anyone interested in physics should really really try to take a tour of the Linear Accelerator lab at Stanford: SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory offers free public tours. Tours last approximately 90 minutes and usually include a visit to the lab’s 2-mile-long linear accelerator, now driving the world’s brightest X-ray source https://www6.slac.stanford.edu/public-tours
ha, the image below is from my Google Maps timeline for March. It is inflated a bit from going to watch some golf but I think it is still fair to say I have gotten out and about in this city. Doesn't include my runs where I don't have my phone. SF is walkable AF if you can handle the hills I had been avoiding Super Duper Burger because it sounded like a place I should avoid. But man they actually have a really really good burger. Went to the one in the Castro and did not expect it to be the kind of place where I could get egg on a burger, which is awesome. So hooray for that Souvla....wow. Had a pork shoulder sandwich from the one on Divisadero and it was insanely good. It seems really really popular with young women. Great place to pick up some food before chilling out at Alamo Square
Lucca still operating till April 30th so go while you can https://sf.eater.com/2019/4/16/18411092/lucca-ravioli-closing-date-april-30-san-francisco El Burrito Express on Taraval is so good and cheap Kezar Pub has outstanding wings. That's a great place for watching sports (soccer in particular), especially if you are near the Haight area or spending time in the park ever wondering where all the shows are in town? The link below is an amazing resource. Ex Hex next Tuesday http://www.foopee.com/punk/the-list/
staying at the Hilton in the Financial district and looking for cocktail and a mid day meal recommendations that are walkable. We're doing a tasting menu at Coi but that's not until 9pm so dont want anything too heavy before that
4/20 this Saturday at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park. Will be walking down there with a couple blueberry donuts from Twisted Donuts and some heavy indica from Harvest on Geary 10 AM-5 PM = an anticipated 15-25K people from all over the world blazing together in what is likely going to be the largest 4/20 gathering in history no work tomorrow so gonna enjoy the hell out of the weather and life in general this weekend
Anyone eaten at Angler yet? have reservations there next month but wanted to make sure its worth going to the top of our food queue
burritos in this city are out of control good. Taqueria Cancun on Mission St makes an elite one but I guess you can't go wrong over there went to The Lunchpad in Hayes Valley today and wow they have really good sandwiches 9th and Irving is such an awesome area
flying in on the 14th for a graduation and just in time to catch a giants day game against the jays and vlad jr.
Stern Grove Festival looks pretty sweet. Free concerts at 19th Ave and Sloat Blvd each Sunday at 2 PM between June 16-August 18 Mitski for free on July 14. That's awesome http://www.sterngrove.org/#concerts
