Randomly chose a 2 player TD prop for tonight… Caesars: BetOnline: It’s a joke. But feel free to sign up for BOL here: https://www.betonline.ag/?RAF=DRA0KAUZ&product=SPO
I would not recommend loading an offshore with a credit card. It’s basically the only good use case for Bitcoin
E60 on Sportscenter discussed the reality of gambling ads being everywhere during Sportscenter and the preview for Sunday OTL said they'd touch the human cost of this including the targeting of vulnerable people. ESPN itself is in betting but at least acknowledging these things is better than nothing, they specifically used the term "addiction crisis". Now that it's legal most places I have mixed feelings on it and tired of being inundated with the ads. Rich "influencer" types with literally no stake in their own bets convincing kids this stuff is normal are absolute scum.
Pregame shows we're never outstanding but they were definitely better when I didn't get reminded every 5 mins to download the app and start betting on everything under the sun
With the younger generations they’ve been introduced to a form of gambling for a decade + now with loot boxes in video games no? Paying money with the hopes of getting some “valuable” item. Getting better odds of receiving a rare item in more expensive packs. No clue how prevalent those are these days.
My mom beat my ass when she got the credit card statement and I spent $33.59 trying to get a Tanooki suit in '93.
It’s an absolute stain on society imo. gambling is present in so many forms that just go under the radar.
It is kind of amazing that illegal bookies do more vetting of their bettors than publicly traded companies. At a minimum, the feds should restrict advertising (like Tobacco), require age/identity verification, and forbid credit card transactions.
My sports media consumption has dropped at least in half the past five years. Part of that could just be growing up but any gambling content is an immediate turn off for me. There is nothing more annoying to me than people talking about what games they are gambling on.
There is a kids gambling app called Omada that gives them virtual coins. Banned my kids from it because it was getting out of hand.
I’d love to know the amount of money lost by high school and college kids playing online poker from 2003-2010 after ESPN put the World Series of Poker in prime time.
Just curious have you downloaded and used a betting app? They do require you to input your ss and DL numbers when signing up. Nevada requires you to be verified in person before you can deposit money into the account.
I did party poker for a while. Genuinely enjoy playing the game. The number of bad beats was hella sus though
Yes. They vary by state. It should be federally regulated and require in-person verification like Nevada.
I don’t have a problem with gambling unrelated but can you guys please donate to tmb we’re low on funds
while that was bad, at least they were losing it to other people, not predatory institutions that lobby legislators for favorable protections
If Congress eventually does get involved, I think that will be the straw that broke the camel's back. ESPNbet is such an easy to understand problem
I am torn on the issue on a number of levels. so instead I’ll say look at me I briefly talked to Jeremy Schaap a few weeks ago when he was in town filming his piece. I also think it would be smart for more people to “quit” gambling on the NFL weekly and instead pay the $500 or $1000 to play in a season long contest at Westgate or Circa or Draftkings or whoever else is putting out a contests near you. so many people gasp at “$1000 to play in a contest they will never win!” but then blow $100-$200 a week on $10 SGPs for 18 weeks straight which they also have no chance to win. Obviously that’s not a solution but probably relatively healthier than chasing 100/1 odds everyday.
the whole feature of shoving at people is that this doesn’t scratch the itch, particularly for people who get addicted
Yeah it’s hard to get addicts to adopt a lesser of two evils option when they aren’t considering ramifications in the first place
And does anyone really care about prop bets? Could care less at the o/u receiving yards for a certain player. Betting was fun when it first came out to keep the games interesting but don't anymore. Just look at the lines to see who's favored and that's about it
There have been legit cheating scandals involving the online poker sites (best known linked below) but I'm hesitant to compare those to the rush of gambling ads these days. Arguably the biggest damage of the poker boom came from tv turning scumbag degenrate gamblers into seemingly well respected people. https://www.pokernews.com/news/2022/11/ultimate-bet-scandal-42623.htm
I’m all for it. I do have a couple major issues with it. #1 - banning/limiting winners. Massive problem. I’ve already been limited to $25 on hard rock here in Florida after 1 month #2 is my biggest issue. It’s the marketing of these crazy parlays that hit. $20 to win $85,000. The problem is everyone then thinks they can do it and they start losing and feeling like ah it’s only $20. someone had brought up the point about the crate/loot games, it’s just like that. 20 here and 20 there. Adds up
I’ve always been amazed at how over priced the loot crate stuff is, 20 dollars a roll or like 100 for 5 rolls I always thought they would get some much more volume at 1 dollar a roll
86% of sportsbook profits from 5% of losers is wild And kids being the norm as addicts instead of the exception: exactly what we all could've seen coming
The advertising is out of control. I can't watch a YT video from a 2k creator that doesn't have Prizepicks or something similar as an ad in the first 30 seconds.
For real. I mean, the bottle of bourbon on my counter, the restaurant I ate at last week, the PS5 games I buy, ect are all "better off" in a mutual fund. But fuck it, its entertainment. Obviously I understand problem gambling is a big thing, I find it funny when people point out that my sports bets aren't getting the ROI of my actual investments
I always chuckle when someone phrases it "I've won xx" its like how much did you lose though. And subscribing to a 22 year Olds service
Alabama's hoping to join this shit and finally get a lottery + sports gambling bill all in one. But we have to vote on it...
Get rid of live bets imo. When gambling first became legalized I loved that. But that isn't be good either. The "first team to xx score in basketball" etc that updates throughout the game Probably ban advertising too. Forget the dudes name, but he was an anti gambling activist? in that CBS segment. Never thought of the issue of the state encouraging more gambling since they get more money.
Touts have been a thing for as long as these games have been on tv and probably earlier than that. They are all full of shit scumbags, if you have a legit edge you bet yourself and if limited you use runners to bet for you. No legit bettors are giving out info that could mess up their own odds. There's literally nothing stopping touts from giving out one bet to half their "customers" and the opposite bet to the other half. If you've bought those Athlon or other college football preview mags and see those gambling ads they're just inevitably lies all around. Live bets aren't going away but there need to be legit controls. Come on bud you don't need to be cynical to realize the "1-800 Gambler" disclaimers after ads are just "cover your ass" nonsense. Agree with advertising controls at a minumum but we've opened Pandora's Box. I'm 35 unmarried zero kids but I'd be scared shitless if I had a kid with a smartphone who has access to gambling apps those are the targets.
I have several friends with gambling addictions and we’re old. I imagine it’s rampant across college campuses
Having to swing by the bar or ask your dad to bring some of these home as a teen. The odds were way worse though.
yea I’d say I have 5 good friends off the top of my head that I would consider having a problem, of course to varying degrees but all noticeable.
