Koush, the developer of Rom Manager and ClockworkMod has released a tether app that doesn't require root and cannot be detected by carriers. Works for all types of computers (PC, Mac, Linux). It's a nice solution for those who want to tether without rooting.

PDANet was also a good solution for me, but it's a wired tether rather than wireless.

I've tried it. Worked well for me, very good data speeds considering it's over USB.

But since I'm rooted I prefer a wireless tether (Wireless Tether for Root Users: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/).

That can depend on who's making the kernel you decide to flash. Rooting alone won't extend your battery. What kind of phone are you coming from?

I only ask because it's a huge adjustment coming from a non-smartphone. The biggest thing you'll have to learn about having an android phone is that you need to carry a charger with you pretty much everywhere you go or get an extra battery. For my Galaxy Nexus I bought the extended battery, but I always keep the original battery charged up in my pocket for those times when you can't leave your phone on a charger.

I was riding down the road the other day and saw an Android sticker on the back of someone's truck....as I got closer I noticed it had Cyanogen written under it. Made me chuckle a little.

Rooted EVO 4G - running synergy with stock kernal
Stock Xoom Wifi - i just applied to moto feedback network hoping to get into an ICS test batch
    Logitech Revue w/ 3.1 update.

there are some good ICS roms for the xoom, so I might just root and go that route.

Yo Arkadin, rooting only has advantages man.. even if all you do is remove the shit apps that come pre-installed.
Just by doing that, you'll free up some space, stop processes that work continuously that eat battery life, and then if you feel like venturing off into the ROM & MOD world of rooting, youre all set.

It took me 45 minutes to root my GN last week and that was having software already installed, knowledge and experience rooting other Android phones. It shouldn't take longer than an hour or two, though.

I'm pretty new to rooting/modding, can you explain what changing your kernel does? I just flashed CM7, but was wondering what advantages/disadvantages changing your kernel has.

The Galaxy line of phones are some of the easiest to root.. literally takes minutes. Theres a tool that you run on your PC with our phone connected and it roots for you automatically. I'm pretty sure same goes for the Galaxy S2.

Kernal changes the volting/powering of the phone. changing kernal allows you to overclock/overpower your phone and get more out of it. it becomes more powerful but battery life is much worse. the opposite happens when you undervolt, great for people who want their battery to last very long.

I watch my radios and sync frequency and was able to get the above 2.8 days. as you can see I went into airplane mode overnight to get those ~70 hours.

Best program for overclocking after you've installed a custom kernel is SetCPU.

A kernel is a way for the software to interact with the hardware, kinda like firmware but basically the biggest improvements with a kernel are usually battery/life/speed/memory/how the LED's work and min/max volume for instance. here is the definition from CM wiki

    What Is A Kernel?

The central component of most operating systems. Its responsibilities include managing the system’s resources (the communication between hardware and software components) and can provide the lowest-level abstraction layer for resources (especially memory, processors, and I/O devices)

    EDIT: too slow

I would consider myself pretty competent and It took me a while before I was willing to root. prob should have done it early. I have never messed with other kernals or setcpu (a program that under/over volts for you)

Im pretty sure cocknballs or fargginicehole knows more about that aspect than I.

I know the language and all may be like, "WTF?!", but that site and the developers there make things super easy to understand.. just gotta follow directions well.
If you do decide to root.. try and do it with some time set aside, a fully charged battery, and make a backup of all your pics, vids, pron, whatever you have on your phone just in case you lose allll data/info when you root.

http://rootzwiki.com/ is another good one. Make sure you check both.

My current set on a Verizon Galaxy Nexus is:

    Rom: CM9 Alpha (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12732-romcdma-cm9-kang-updated-15-740pm-lte-toggle-included/)
Besides the regular CM goodies the best new feature of CM9 is an LTE toggle in the notification power widget.

    Kernel: Leankernel 1.3.1exp2 (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13092-kernel-leankernel-minimalistic-kernel-130-1312/)
Along with the ability to manually undervolt, this kernel features a new governor which switches off one CPU's cores when the screen is off.
