he went on TV all the time, was a main writer for them, and has one of their more popular podcasts. Doesn't seem crazy.
In an era of $100M podcasts he would be silly to not try and own his own show given his status in the NBA pod world?
No one is paying much for a nerdy nba pod. If his podcast was generating 7 figures in ad revenue at ESPN he would still be at ESPN
guys worse than lowe have made it on their own (that dweeb ethan strauss and charisma vacuums nate duncan and danny leroux come to mind), so no reason to think he wouldnt do well for himself going that route
Far more detached and less emotional than I expected, which probably made it a better conversation. I think he's right about ESPN and pods. I also think the "soul of ESPN" part is maybe the biggest shift from the prime Skipper era (early/mid-2010s) towards today because Pitaro just clearly doesn't care about any of that.
Totally agree and very happy Bull Hurley finally got his flowers. One of my favorite villains growing up. I agree the double elimination thing always bothered me as a kid though. And he should’ve been working for Loggia.
I find the firing of Lowe to be odd, I can’t imagine it in a NFL scenario. The NBA keep selling ESPN / ABC their prime rights when they continue to mess up their coverage of the product. The Lowe podcast might not justify the price tag of him on the face of it but he is kind of a loss leader in terms of giving credibility to the product and ESPN. ESPN have continued to fail with NBA Countdown and their commentary teams & now this. Why do the NBA allow it? When you compare it to the NFL. The NFL would bully ESPN and threaten them over the quality of their coverage (for good and for bad). Is Adam Silver all about the $$$ in the short term?
He’s made all of the owners billions, and he’s got role players making 15M per year. They don’t give a shit what Jalen Rose says or doesn’t say if the check clears imo.
Really enjoyed bill making the A’s owner a squatting tenant in his analogy of the current Oakland situation. No bill, he’s quite actually the owner in this situation.
only took like 5 years for the fellas to consider doing a bunch of horror movies as a theme in october for the rewatchables
What is a brutal boy? Amanda used the term with such confidence I assumed it was an online thing, but is she just referencing some YA book series?
Amanda being so online that now she is annoyed by the Brutalist before it even comes out is insanity. just log off
Sean Fennessey standing in a closet of Criterion Collection movies. I was confused as I've seen that same picture before of Bill Hader in what appeared to be the same closet and was confused why multiple people had the same interior design. Then I looked it up and apparently it's just the same one.
criterion puts out youtube videos of the film world selecting their films out of a closet at their nyc headquarters been doing it for almost 15 years now - here's the playlist
4 PTA movies, and he looks over at Sean Fennessey as he tentatively puts his hand on each one to see if Sean is smiling or not.
hed definitely take baumbachs kicking and screaming, the friends of eddie coyle, and menace II society (while giving an awkward shout out to van) but theres more than enough altmans, scorseses, de palmas, linklaters, baumbachs, and whit stillmans in there to keep him from looking like a total dolt honestly hed probably just highlight all the films that theyve done on the rewatchables (theres a bunch) to make himself sound good
