getting back into homebrewing after a 6 year hiatus. I made a Belgian Witbier with Sichuan Peppercorns on Father's Day and I'm making my first lager - a Munich Helles today. low-carbing for a couple weeks to drop some lbs, but once I'm done, I should have two (hopefully) tasty beers on tap on the kegerator.
Is infinite ghost a new thing? Been out the game a while but had a couple cups at brewery yesterday and it’s fantastic. Like ghost in the machine just hotboxed the car with some absolute heat
Going to have the ol' kegerator going soon with all three taps filled. Sichuan Peppercorn Witbier Munich Helles Zombie Dust clone And to keep the pipeline going, I'm brewing an Oktoberfest using the leftover yeast cake from the Helles (WLP860 - the Augustiner strain).
yeah - witbier often has citrus notes, so I added some sichuan peppercorns (quite different from typical peppercorns). they have a floral, citrusy thing going - alongside their buzzing, tongue-numbing qualities. which I was also curious to see if that translated.
Trying a quad IPA for the first time. Kinda tastes like what i remember Green Flash’s Palate Wrecker tasting like back in the day.
It's been a bit since the last time I had an entire can of beer by myself but I had no problem doing so today..
'tis (almost) the season - what's everyone's favorite Oktoberfest beers? I've been trending toward the German Festbier style more than the Marzens over the last couple of years. I
I got a four pack of Paulaner Oktoberfest tallboys for $7.50 last week. Not sure I'd say it's a favorite but great value.
If you can ever find the liter cans of Paulaner Oktoberfest Weisn, buy all of them. That shit is special. Local Kroger has had Paulaner Munchner Lager (Helles) 4 packs of tall boys for $8 over the past year. I've bought a few case's worth over that timeframe.
Speaking of Helles, I'd never given half a shit about it until I went to Munich, where I realized it's one of the world's perfect beers. Prior to that, I'd lumped it in with blonde ales that were for people that didn't really like beer.
I made a quick trip over to San Francisco last weekend. Went to this bar recommended by a friend it and it was absolutely perfect Tornado https://maps.app.goo.gl/GAK257jskpt41wc56
A buddy took a job with the Charleston Fermontory. They had an event in my city while I was out of town so him and 3 of the guys from the brewery stayed at my place for the event. They stocked my fridge full of beers and they were all absolutely delicious. Lots of IPAs but some pilsners and seasonal stuff too. Definitely keeping an eye out for their stuff from now on (beyond just because a friend works for them).
Fremont Cambios. Too drunk and drank most of it before taking a picture. Bottlecraft in San Diego is dangerous
Yep. Might hit it up again tonight. Those Fremont stouts are fantastic. Wish I had room to take bottles back to Texas
Lunch options in San Diego would have me drinking way too much. At Hidden Craft Pure Project - Murkury Rising
Pouring your own is dangerous. I still have to walk back to a conference and pretend like I care Pure Project - Gone Wanderin
The bottle craft location at liberty station has a bigger selection if you’re so inclined. Also next to stone.
Finally got my hands on some Spindletap on a quick trip to Texas a few weeks ago. Lived up to the hype.
Ah man that brings back memories. I lived in SF for a couple years back in 2014-2016. Toronado, the original Rosamunde’s next door, and the Rosamunde’s at Mission and 24th were frequent stops. Toronado was also where my craft beer wave peaked then receded. 2016 SF Beer Week. Two different -Tion Days where they had tons of vintage and limited release Russian River offerings. Then getting multiple glasses of Pliny the Younger as the bartenders were throwing people out left and right for not ordering properly lol. The whole week was basically tasting nearly every bucket list beer I had at the time. I still drink good beer, but I’m no longer a hunter. And most days I’m just sipping on whatever I pick up with my 25% local discount at Firestone Walker weekly. Anyway, I only popped into this thread this morning because I got notification that one of my favorite and most iconic beer spots in SF is closing its doors this weekend. City Beer Store. Had a lot of great sessions there as well, including way overpaying for Cantillon a few times when it was really hard to nab. Very sad to see it won’t be around next trip up to the city :(
I went to the old Cellarmaker a few times. Sad to hear it’s no longer there either. It was one of those rare places in the city that actually had ample space haha. I don’t recall it being all that close to City Beer, but I could easily be wrong. Memories get fuzzier as time passes
You are right. I associated them together because we did go to them back to back on one trip according to my trip spreadsheet but must've taken an Uber or something. I really liked that place. The Cigarettes and Coffee stout is excellent. They were really weird about putting sports on the TV though. The TV was off and I asked them to put the NFL draft on and was told, "local games only."
Man, I wish I could give you some good recs, but all my favorite spots are gone except Toronado for the most part. Mikkeller was a great place to drink and always had excellent guest taps. One of my best drinking experiences ever was there during Zwanze Day. They only let like 40 of us in. Bottomless Cantillon that day. La Trappe was an incredible place as well. Not too far from the Wharf. Basement, lots of Vintage Bottles. Closed. City Beer is gone. The Rare Barrel in Berkeley is gone. Seems like some of the other popular spots like Monk's Kettle are still humming along, but I was never in love with that place or some of the others. I'm sure a lot of new spots have popped up that are great too, but I have no idea what they'd be. Not the best selection in the world, but I did always enjoy drinking at The View at I believe the Hyatt. Top floor and great 360 views of the city, especially at sunset. El Techo was another cool rooftop spot for Margaritas. There's also this fever dream Alice In Wonderland type spot next to Toronado that's absolutely worth having a drink at. It's probably closed now too though haha.
That's a statewide problem. I don't even bother going out for games any more. They'll label themselves a sports bar then not even turn on sound if a CA team is playing for a championship. It's lame.
My City Beer Store story… Went to a work conference in SF 7-8 years ago. Visiting for the first time and stayed in Union Square. Convinced some coworkers to walk to CBS from the hotel because SF is touted as such a great walking city. I had no idea the differences between pockets/neighborhoods and figured it was all just tourist friendly. The 30 minute walk from Union Square through the tenderloin and mission with my very conservative coworkers is something I won’t forget. I’m not easily shook and even I was a little taken aback by the rot. My coworkers were absolutely terrified and didn’t venture out the rest of the week. I drank a lot of great beer though.
posting here since the homebrew thread seems to be gone today, I brewed a triple-decoction Czech Pilsner that I am fermenting under pressure in a 6 gallon corny keg anyway, the original gravity post-boil ended up at 1.065! so, assuming the Saflager 34/70 ferments down to what it tends to, this will be a 7.2% abv lager. got. damn.
