My daughter started school this year and has already had 2 active shooter drills. I become simultaneously enraged and deeply saddened each time she tells me about it, and what they have to do. Fucking 5 year olds playing a game of who can be quietest so "the bad man won't get you"
Honestly they shouldnt even tell K-2nd grade or so what the drill is for. Just call it an "emergency drill" and everyone goes into the 'safe room' or whatever. Because i cant stand the fact either that someone has to tell my 5 year old about this stuff when he is just a couple of months removed from happy-daycare-land. He's too young to have to worry about this shit when he has a whole life to later learn how fucked up the world is.
Same. While I’m glad my three kids know what to do, I’m also saddened and enraged they even have to. Instead of teaching them what to do, how about we we prevent them from even happening.
That's what they do for my second grader. All she knows is that it is an "intruder drill" for if someone is in the school that should not be there. It is heartbreaking to hear her talk about the drills and try to process why someone would want to come to a school to hurt children.
