I probably need to replace my needle after having it for a couple years now. I have no idea what the lifespan of them is. I finally got my collection all put up on discos. Not to sell of course, just to have them all cataloged somewhere.
Don't do it! Spoiler Just kidding. Do it. But be prepared to spend way more than you intend. The addiction is real.
Thanks. We went to Ikea with the intention of buying Kalax, but found that more appealing, though it's not as natural of a fit, hence the basket on the right until I can fit something on the open sides to let me flip them. The bottom has sides. The old beast of a stereo was a cheap flea market find to have something to play through, but it sounds pretty good, so I've spent my equipment upgrade budget on more records. On Discogs...I use it the same way. Did you know if you open your collection in the app and shake your phone, it recommends a random title to play? I just learned that. It's a fun solution when I'm being indecisive.
Fuck I didn’t know you could log your collection with Discogs. My wife is gone for the weekend and now my whole weekend is going to be thrown off because I have an inexplicable compulsion to spend hours and hours logging hundreds of vinyl
I started off just thinking I'd catalog the artist and title then quickly went to "must catalog exact bar code on album so I know exactly what edition I have". This reminds me that I haven't added to the collection in awhile, time to go shopping.
Thanks. Love all your rock and the variety. I need to get more rock albums, I just have to get it through my head that I can't always get first releases. Especially with older albums that I really want. Think I might do some record store shopping this weekend and look for some new additions. Really jealous of that Nirvana Unplugged!
Thanks. I decided early on that I'd rather worry about having music I enjoy or records that I think are "cool" to have rather than focusing on the collectible angle and seeking out specific pressings, etc. My teenaged boys have bought a handful of the newer rock, knowing when I die they have a plan to flip a coin to go first then take turns picking records. I'm watching my back. I do enjoy finding copies in the "wild" such as used bins, antique malls, flea markets and online auctions, versus going the easy route and buying new copies from stores or Amazon, etc. That Unplugged was from a guy who put it up in a record auction group for $16 and said it skipped a couple times on side 2 for no visible reason as it looked perfect. I took a chance and it plays on my table perfectly.
I spend way too much time adding things to my Discogs want list and staring wistfully at albums that haven’t been pressed in a decade and so are hundreds of dollars. I’ve only been into collecting for a little over a year but I already have ~50 records. It’s a fun hobby.
I started adding my collection to discogs but aftet a year of collecting it got out of control and I got way behind. Also a great feeling is when something you've been holding off spending enormous markup prices on gets repressed!
I just add whatever I buy from Discogs to my list, nothing I've gotten from shops or other online sites. I also want as close to first press as possible, but I like a lot of older music so it's hard. Plus I don't really understand the cat #/release info.
Same - have no clue how to evaluate an antique record player - but it is by Phillips so I'm sure it was initially legit. Trying to finish this damn condo finally and figured it would be a nice piece to have given the wife has a decent record collection.
my set up needs a ton of work, lol. Need to move the TV up so the center speaker fits. Need a real table to put the record player on. Need to clear out the entertainment center cause it's getting tight with the records. Also need to dust.
I'm not sure if bar code is the right term. Maybe cat# is the right term. I think all of mine have one, even the oldest ones.
I'm that way for some things but the ex was great at gift giving and spoiled me on that. Hence the first presses of NWA, Eazy E, Dre, etc. Maybe that was part of a sinister plot by her!
The stand I got is pretty nice and came from a 3rd party seller on Walmart actually. Wasn't bad price wise at all and is sturdy. It has nothing on the TMB with the custom made center with lyrics engraved on it but it works lol.
Yea I was thinking you meant actual bar codes, scannable and wonderful, as they exist on modern sleeves.
Me trying to open a media mailer whose perforated strip breaks like 20 times before its finally removed
Just inherited my father in laws collection, four full large milk crates. It looks like a great collection and includes two copies of Aja, #blessed.
look into the Fluance RT85 too. better flutter numbers and has auto stop. the RT 81 through 85 are all good imo
what’s the budget? rega and pyle make good cheaper ones. pro-ject has a cool tube preamp if aesthetics are important
this is a really good budget friendly option but you need to make sure you have a moving magnet cartridge, since this isn’t moving coil friendly https://www.turntablelab.com/produc...YwQC2-b77VGu_9aczgjnLn652hcLxW3xoCLfYQAvD_BwE
if you’re set on the uturn special then you can just add a preamp for like $150. that might be easier tbh
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it kinda depends on your setup. generally you’re not going to hear a huge difference unless you’re using some high end system

FYI, Target.com has all their vinyl buy 2 get 1 free for Black Friday. Looks like they have 1,000 or more options. Not too shabby, I don't ever see new records on sale.
