I actually think coach salaries coming down will be a natural result of everything fortunately. Look at NFL ratios of players to coaches.

Pretty wild that Saban went 20+ years as a coach with being generally thought of positively, as a good man. Sure some hated him bc of how much he won but he seemed like a good dude that supported his players and coaches and did the right thing. He's been retired a couple months and now he's ruining all of that goodwill he had built up. He's showing himself to be a bitter old man that can't control kids by starving them. I'll always appreciate all the fun times he created for Bama fans but I wish he'd have just gone to the lake and chilled bc finding out Santa Claus is really the Scrooge sucks.

it's just so ignorant for coaches to complain about this, when they all do it themselves.
    Conferences are disbanding bc money.
but heaven forbid the people actually making them that money, gets rewarded.

All of it. Nick Saban’s done more good for college athletes, the people of Tuscaloosa, the state of Alabama than almost anyone. If you think his legacy is tarnished because he has a different opinion than you then you aren’t a serious person. But I hope you get the validation from the people on the internet that you desperately crave.

He did a lot of great things as a coach but that doesn't change the fact he's coming across like an absolute asshole on this issue. It's not an opinion, he's just wrong. He's a hypocrite. It's ok to say that. He didn't coach for the love of the game but he's whining that players aren't doing that. That's some bullshit.

Yep I’ve always like Saban which makes this so much more disappointing. It’s the easiest thing in to world to not open your mouth and sound like a piece of shit. We’ve had around 300 HC the past decade and only 3 that I can think of decided to open their mouth when they could’ve just shut up, Leach with his Trump rallies, Gundy with his OAN stuff, and Rolo on his anti-vax campaign during a global pandemic. There’s lots of pieces of shit out there, especially in the coaching world. But most are capable of keeping that at the dinner table at home. It’s the easiest thing in the world to say that Black Lives Matter when you coach a team of 90%+ African Americans. Why is Saban on this campaign after he retired?

Not that I disagree with the latter opinion, but it’s pretty clear that Saban’s winning increased the enrollment of Bammer by a significant amount. This is a guess, but I’d tend to think that has some state wide impact as well (aside from the direct economic impact of college football).

I'm willing to listen to your explanation on this.

    My take:

He didn't coach for the love of the game. If Bama were to have lowered his salary to $100k, he would have been on the first jet out of town. He literally had a clause in his contract that said he had to be the highest paid coach. He clearly cared about what he was being paid above all else. Yet he's upset that players only care about how much they are being paid.

How is that not being a hypocrite?

But he's mad that the players cared about what they were making. :cmonson:

Saban has a clause in his contract that effectively guarantees his salary can be adjusted as the coaching market changes, as noted by Paul Myerberg and Steve Berkowitz of USA Today. The specific language in Saban’s deal states that the Alabama coach and the university will meet annually on Feb. 1 “for so long as necessary to determine the marketplace trends regarding head football coach compensation.” Furthermore, Saban’s contract states that the Crimson Tide will be required to increase Saban’s “total guaranteed annual compensation” if it becomes less than the average of either the three highest-paid SEC coaches or the five highest-paid FBS coaches.

I’m not going to quibble with what constitutes being “that impactful.” Just stating that he did affect something moderately tangible.

I certainly wouldn’t say he approached anywhere near the impact of a Senator.

Do you think majority of the kids they’re getting from outside the southeast are graduating and settling down in the state? If not, what does the rest of the state benefit from then? It’s not like their academic standards have significantly risen. The school probably benefits the most financially. If you listen to podcasts, his former players are pretty open about relationships being business over personal/family like with him

His take isn’t players shouldn’t make money, or shouldn’t make as much money as they can. Again he recruited on Bryce Young having national NIL deals. Saban’s compensation isn’t relevant to this conversation. So there’s no connection to him being a hypocrite.

His point is players are motivated by short-term money first. Development, fit and other intangibles are very important. You might not think that they aren’t and it’s only about the dollar. That’s fine. The person who spent decades in football thinks it’s a problem. Further, I’d argue if Saban was solely motivated by money, he’d have taken the Texas job a decade ago. They certainly could have paid more. I wonder if he didn’t because the fit was better at Alabama.
Reasonable people can disagree on topics and not be bad people or assholes. If you think someone’s legacy is tarnished simply because they disagree with you, then you are among the most smug people around with a way overvalued sense of what your opinion is worth.

    The fuck it's not.

It's on the coaches to show the kids it's not all about the money. That's part of their job. "Hey we're going to get you X money, now let's focus on getting you better." That's how it should go.

Depends on the subject. Some things can just be disagreed, some things make one an asshole for having that opinion. This may not tarnish him for many Bama fans but there's a looooot of people out there that have just this week said "Oh damn, he's an asshole for that."

I find it hard to really hold these opinions against guys like Saban, Izzo, Roy Williams, etc. These guys have been doing this one way for 40+ years and then all of a sudden the landscape flips on its head entirely and everything about their jobs changes in their mid-60s or later and I'm supposed to get mad at them for looking around and thinking things were better in their day?

I don't need to defend them like some do when they say the dumb/weird stuff, but I also don't feel like I need to dunk on them for saying it out loud, either. I'm not really sure why anyone would expect them to think differently. And if they said they did, I would think they were lying.

This is also yet another great reason why the people who deify coaches like them are stupid.

He won football games at Alabama. Which increased applications to Alabama. Which made Alabama slightly more competitive to get into and made the university more money. Which led to slightly better professors. Which led to slightly better education. And he supported the BLM movement which 99% of other HC did as well.

The Saban's investment in Tuscaloosa post-tornado is real and a big deal to people who call it home. From housing to the Saban Center to all sorts of other local investments (parks, the river development, schools, teachers) , they've been very active in the city since 2011. And they do it pretty quietly all things considered, which I probably appreciate more than the actual monetary giving.

I agree in terms of Saban's outburst having a legitimate chance to harm the athletes compared to Izzo or Roy just being dumb in an interview. That is a pretty clear distinction.
