It's happening. I absolutely can't wait. Adding post from later in thread for newbies to the WOT world
Lol, remember when George Martin sucked and didn’t finish books? Well our guy died and still finished the books, because he left extensive notes. Until then it was a very complex journey that meandered at times, but has some classic fantasy tropes... a chosen one (and a supporting cast of chosen ones) Small town group is special Magic A sword Warring factions People with strange rituals Quests A dark one
Basically farm boy finds out he’s the messiah, and he’s the one destined to save the world from the big bad. But in doing so he’s able to use magic, which in this series basically makes men go mad. So he’s considered extremely dangerous and there’s an order of all-female sorceresses who are hell bent on either stopping him or helping him, depending on the sorceress and their allegiance
That’s probably good. I had to put down GoT on first read because he was literally describing pedophilia. I struggled to get past that. I had to pretend they were a lot older in the context of that world.
I eventually picked it back up, but took some courage and convincing. Now I hate him like everyone else for not finishing.
The show was less extreme than the book. They actually added at least 3 or 4 years to many of the characters.
If anyone comes to this thread that hasn't read the books. Here's a couple of incredibly well made videos that gives a good backdrop on the story and the world with no spoilers
I'm pretty sure it's just Eye of the World. From what I remember, that one's fairly concise. A lot more fluff to cut out in the middle books.
The video on magic is excellent and simple. Granted I haven’t touched any books in about 7 or 8 years so I have a lot to remember, but I don’t feel it’s spoiler free per se in terms of male magic in particular, because if I remember correctly we really don’t learn much about males until much later. That said, it doesn’t reveal plot points, so definitely a good primer and reminder.
I think the going opinion is that they'll do mostly season 1 based on Eye of the World but at the same time they've cast Siuan, Leane, and Liandrin so we might get some of the Great Hunt as well. Im sure there will be a lot of trimming and a good amount of changes to be able to introduce all the key characters which is countless On the IMDB page it had 6 episode titles showing 1. Leavetaking 2. Shadow's Waiting 3. A Place of Safety 4. The Dragon Reborn 5. Blood Calls Blood 6. The Flame of Tar Valon
Feel like he oughta be about 6’7” the way they keep mentioning it. So far the story has BIG dragon age energy. Have to imagine this was big inspiration for BioWare
Yeah in the books he’s super tall. They may do some forced perspective with him to make him look taller. Or they just may not focus on it as much. The first book is definitely the most traditional fantasy book of the lot
The first book is very Tolkien-esque but around the end of the 2nd to 3rd it begins to have it's own feel and becomes it's own story and world. Since I'm guessing this is your first time I will give you a little warning...the books can be extraordinarily descriptive and long so if you're a person who tires of descriptive writing where the author describes everything in a ton of detail I would bail now. The size and scope of the world is humongous and can be a little overwhelming. I think by the end of the series there is somewhere around 3,000 named characters and 5 million words
Then enjoy yourself. It's a massive undertaking and for me it was well well worth it. One of my favorite all time if not the favorite.
It’s been a looong time since I read the series but I don’t think I have a reread in me. Just going to watch the series and hopefully me not remembering all the details will help me not get upset at changes like I did in early seasons of GoT.
From everything I’ve read, I’m not going to be upset at the changes to the source material. Specifically to the female characters. Jordan couldn’t write female characters for shit, to be frank.
The obvious answer to that is to just mindlessly browse the wikia pages for the books. That's usually what I do almost immediately after finishing a series or being caught up with one
I usually like to read the books before I watch the show, but it hurts to think about reading a 20 book series.
I think it’s 14 iirc but yeah you have to be dedicated. And it slogs in the middle. They could really cut out books 7-10 completely and probably be fine.
