In the middle of the first episode and really enjoying it. The character seem to have much more organic connection and depth than in the books. I always hated how they turned Rand into basically a robot tool. They may get there, but happy we are where we are the connections still exist.
S3 seems better written so far. Good action sequence in Ep1. the Aviendha casting remains awful. Awful.
Lanfear is A+. honestly, visually show has been upgraded significantly. like even the Ways are cooler
yes, I don't want to inject race into this, but it is hard not to when we know they are light skinned redheads. They even remark that Elayne could pass for Aiel, which I also thought when I saw her. I am really enjoying the depth this season though, and even trying to interject comedic lines. Makes it feel like the story ahs more texture. I mean Nynaeve even making a funny sexual observation is just not in the books at all, but in a good way. Always felt Jordan's details tended to be very flat and impersonal.
I do really like the show. But the Rand actor is so bland to me. I’m not sure if it’s him or the writing for him but I just wish he was a little more charismatic.
It’s not even race (although it is distracting), her accent sucks and she’s not a good actress. I think Rand is bland but better in S3, especially dream Rand. I think the acting this season is better and so is the writing. It’s very noticeable how much better the new Mat is this season. I think Egwene and Elayne actresses are good in S3, and even Nynaeve seems better this season (but she’s still pretty forgettable). So far, the actress who plays Chiad is outshining Aviendha by a wide margin.
Very fair point. I had that thought as I typed that earlier. I guess it’s just my eyes glaze over when he’s on screen and for the main character I’d prefer that didn’t happen.
The Elayne actress is my favorite of the bunch. She’s really good imo. off topic kinda but when I was in London last year I saw an ad for Hadestown and the guy that plays Mat was the lead. Had no idea he was also someone who could be on West End
Loved the first episode and about to watch the other two. Only thought at the conclusion of the episode: Spend an entire season trying to find your friends and regroup because strength in numbers and best friends forever Hangout for one month Alright guys time to split up
Yeah she’d probably the second best in my eyes. I’m interested to see Perrin more this season Spoiler especially after introducing Faile
Lanfear>Elayne>Egwene>Moraine>>>>>>>>every other actress. Andor contingent was well cast as well. They’ve really nailed most of these characters.
Goddamnit I knew Lanfear looked familiar. Lizzie from Peaky Blinders. But she looks a lot hotter in this.
That's the books too. You are always hoping for them to get back together and for things to be how they were. That drives a lot of the drama.
Yea but they let her get sexy in this show. They tried to make all the women in that show except grace and the crazy russian chick look real homely.
Same, because I thought it was really well done but wonder if it is confusing to those who haven’t read the books and have already forgotten about the Tuatha'an.
Man, that was a really great episode of TV nearly ruined by the nearly unwatchable acting performance of Aviendha. I kinda almost feel bad for any WoT fans that quit on the show when it was really bad.
First off - I'm glad Rand is showing glimpses of actually having a personality this season. the night time camp scene at the beginning he was as non-robotic as we've seen all show. Rest of the episode, besides being rand-centric, was pretty badass all around. The try-hard dude in the tents before they went in to the trial was cringey. Rest of the episode was excellent. Loved the aesthetic of the smoke city. Questions/Clarifications: - what actually caused that smoke? and is it eternal? The one flashback showed the smoke appearing - was that the first time and now its there for good? Or is it for lack of a better term "a defense mechanism for the city" whenever outsiders are near? - the Rand in the flashback that killed and broke the oath - was that the same Lewan that was the previous dragon reborn that Ishmael talked about with Lanfear all last season? - I may have missed bc watching late night after 12 hours of bball: what was the "mission" for giving the Aiel Leaf People the tree and glow ball? To find somewhere safe to keep them both because the subsequent further-back flashback Lanfear opened the gate to the Dark crew? - Moraine is basically fated to die to Lanfear and nothing she can do about it?
to the best of my knowledge and memory... - I believe the smoke has something to do with the one power. That is why Moraine commented on it being there then slipping away. - Previous Dragon Reborn was Lews Therin Telamon. I don't think this was him. Lews Therin was the most powerful Aes Sedai during the Age of Legends (yes they had male Aees Sedai before the male half of the power got corrupted.). -As far as moraine, no but clearly there was a high probability. This is what Vulture said, and I agree..."the Wheel, showing her glimpses of her possible futures. In some, she is Rand’s servant. In some, Rand is hers. In some, she subdues him. In some, she kills him. In some, they are lovers. In some, she and Lanfear are lovers. And in many — many, many, many — Lanfear kills her, over and over and over. Moiraine knows that none of these futures are set in stone, but this one, at least, seems more likely to come to pass than the others." -I don't think the mission was clear other than to protect them.
1. It’s a barrier put there presumably by Aes Sedai after all the original “Leaf people” aka Jenn Aiel died. It blocks most channeling or more accurately makes channeling more difficult. The flashback we saw is when it likely “started” although I don’t recall that scene being canon from the book. It’s there permanently, not temporary/situationally. the city was designed by the leaf people to look like the famous cities from before the breaking of the world and was a place of peace, safe from male channelers who started to go mad. 2. Nope. This was showing Rand’s Aiel ancestors, how they started as servants of the Aes sedai, became carriers/protectors of the tree of life and several powerful magical relics aka glow balls, and how they turned from the peaceful leaf people to the Aiel in the wastelands. Lews Therin wasn’t Aiel, just a super powerful channeler and one of the last dragons. Rand is not related to Lews Therin, but rather Lanfear believes he is Lews Therin reincarnated since she believes he is the dragon reborn. 3. yeah - the male channelers started going insane due to the one power being tainted after the breaking of the world, so the AES Sedai wanted to get the “glow balls” away from any male channelers. Part of the defense of the city, the smoke, blocks some/most channeling. 4. the visions for Moraine show many possible “turns of the wheel” aka possible futures. Nothing set in stone.
You’re supposed to hate the guys in the tents. Also, the double dragon tattoos are proof that Rand is the Car’a’carn, chiefs of their clan come out with one dragon tattoo. They showed it but didn’t explain it maybe, but a lot of Aiel can’t handle the discovery that they were from the way of the leaf and broke their oath because they value their honor so highly, which is why the guy was clawing his eyes out. So all of their leaders know this, but keep it a complete secret.
I read the books but it’s been a decade so forgive me if this is obvious Spoiler Can someone remind me what the flashback scene with Lanfear as an Aes Sedai and the ship that falls, sky breaks up is supposed to be? My initial thought was an actual physical breaking of the world but iirc the breaking is really just when the male channelers destroy everything. Is that what that was supposed to be, or am I forgetting something else?
Spoiler That’s the bore when they drilled into the dark one’s prison to access more of the one power and freed the dark one.
The Aes Sedai in the previous flashback mentioned that happening right before Rand went into that flashback
No spoiler because it’s not super important, but that floating ball is a university. Her and others were looking for a way to increase access to the One Power and accidentally bored a hole into the dark one’s prison accessing the true power. Later this lead to/caused the eventual breaking of the world once all the channeling men went crazy.
Where in the timeline of flashbacks does the breaking of the world occur? I'd guess it happened sometime after the tree/ball were given to the Aiel just based on the aesthetics of things and appearance of superior technology
I think the breaking was actively happening during the scene where Rand is given the glowball and tree and him and his partner are racing away from the city in wagons. The breaking caused the male channelers to go mad and lead to the destruction of most of the more advanced cities, and ending the age of Legends and moving into the third age. the breaking wasn’t an event as much as it was a period of time (like hundred years) when the mad channelers destroyed most of society. Like flattened mountains and raised new ones, drained oceans and flooded continents, leveled cities. the breaking was absolutely started after a single event (not shown in this episode), but it’s heavy heavy spoilers because I will almost guarantee we’ll see the flashback in the series and it’s relevant to future events.
only 2 episodes into Season 3, can someone explain to me what the fuck greymen are or what it means to go grey?
They are an assassin that basically dedicated themselves to the dark, not tons of info on how they become that way but that’s what she was doing to the guy at the end. They basically are “invisible”, not literally but the magic makes you not able to perceive them until they are killing you.
Sounds a lot like Black Knife Assassins in Elden Ring, which GRRM would have stolen from this material
I binged S3 to its present point last night. I agree the above opinions that much is improved from S2. Especially Mat Cauthon. The actors they chose for Gawyn and Galad fit the book descriptions very well. The Sea Folk Sailmistress too. The voice of the actress playing Elaida is fantastic. At first Faile disappointed me. The Faile in the books has the appearance of a hawk (beakish nose, penetrating eyes) but she grew on me. Lord Luc looks nothing like I had imagined. The part I was most pleased with was how they handled Rand’s flashbacks in the columns. They nailed that sequence.
Can someone remind me what these white cloak people’s deal is? Just anti magic? scared of getting spoiled by google
