This probably wouldn't have helped him at this point, but I wonder why every player doesn't wear guardian caps in-game. It seems like that's sort of a no-brainer decision with the only downside being maybe something petty like aesthetics
Data shows they lessen force of impact by 10% with NFL players. That’s significant. Less external force = less internal force.
A 63 page thread dedicated to every throw by the only athlete in pro sports anyone pretends to apparently care about their concussions, the team barely looks professional without him, and he’s tired of your shit. soft is about one of the last words I’d use to describe this guy who keeps coming back and still plays well.
Yea man. TMB definitely doesn't have a love for trolling Miami based sports teams. Especially The Banks. Never happened before ever...
Hey cool. I’m sure this thread exists and has gone 63 pages from equal parts Miami Dolphins and Bammers. I’ll take it
It’s an absolute travesty that the NFL and the Dolphins are allowing him to play. People are going to point to Tua in 30 years as the genesis of significant rule changes to make sure it never happens again.
This is exactly Sub-Zero's point. You have all this vitriol for Tua playing, but where's your outrage for Denzel Ward suffering his 6th confirmed concussion in 4 seasons? There are numerous other examples of players who keep coming back for more after suffering multiple concussions, but for whatever reason the media/tmb only have time to talk about Tua coming back. It's definitely a strange phenomenon.
Yes - they’re all terrible tragedies that should all serve to fundamentally change the game of football. Heartbreaking what happened to Paul Oliver and absolutely insane what happened with Javon Belcher with no changes. However, Tua’s issues are more prominent because of his position, his contract, and the on-field symptoms we’ve seen. It’s stupid that we still allow the current helmets and haven’t changed the game. Denzel Ward should also not be allowed to play. Not sure what point you’re trying to make.
Agreed in the short term, but just think of how the game has changed in the last 20 years. Hopefully it changes way more in the next 30.
What can really be changed though? If it's your opinion that tackle football should be done away with that's fine, but I don't see any way to remove or significantly reduce concussions from football right now short of just not playing. Tua was wearing the highest rated helmet available when he got his latest concussion.
There's no way to get rid of them imo. That one specifically where you go down backwards and your head hits the turf. I'm not sure there's a helmet fix for that
1. Players should be required to wear the most safe equipment possible, regardless of how dumb it looks. 2. Because we know that CTE is absolutely wrecking players and that the NFL has a proven history of covering it up, we should have truly independent oversight of concussion evaluations. 3. They should continue to change rules aggressively until CTE rates of players come down to a medically acceptable level.
The question, I suppose, is where do we as a society want to draw a line regarding people voluntarily maiming themselves for money and fame. Pretty clear that things like bum fights are over the line, but it’s weird where people feel comfortable drawing it. Full disclosure - I’m super conflicted about watching football! Personally, I think I’d rather see football become something closer to flag football than what it is now.
You'd have to fundamentally change the game and society as a whole. I would personally continue playing if I were Tua because of the insane amount of money. That doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Also the NFL doesn't care about CTE and never has. It's the racism dial joke only it's concussions
I don’t feel comfortable with telling someone else who is free to make choices they can’t pursue a career in something, especially when they know the risks. Football is dangerous and you cannot legislate injuries and concussions out of the game unless the entire concept of the sport is changed. I sure as hell will not allow either of my sons to play but that is where my ability to stop someone ends. I also love watching it and will continue to do so.
If a dude had one of those heart conditions that could kill him at any moment, would you want him to have the choice to die on the field? That seems barbaric to me.
Personally I don't watch much boxing or UFC just because it hasn't really been something I'm into, but I'd think those sports by most any measure are much closer to that line than football is. But maybe that's a bit of ignorance in my part from not really following it. So I don't think football in its current form is going away anytime soon. Agreed with you fully on having a stricter protocol and it being a rule that every player has to wear the highest rated helmet for their position.
Boxing is very bad but also a lot of fun to watch. I think the boxers who hang on too long do the most long term damage, see: Muhammad Ali
Also probably didn't help Ali long term that he had such a good jaw by all accounts. Probably better for a boxer's brain health if they are hitting the mat after a blow and not shaking it off and getting hit again.
Joe Burrow admitted to not remembering a game. Derek Carr had multiple concussions in a calendar year. Both starting quarterbacks but no opposing active head coach is asking them to retire. I’m sure there’s been more as far as quarterback. Tua has just been oddly polarizing even before all of this (hence this thread starting before any concussions). So all I’m saying is the polarization around him is just weird. the concussion issue in football and what can/can’t be improved is a whole separate thing. I’m not even sure guardian caps would help with any of Tua’s hits since the head still rattles inside the helmet for example. my point is just the Tua discourse itself and how it’s for some reason reserved for just him. And he isn’t a huge personality who brings it on himself like baker mayfield or one of those guys.
Getting back to the thread title. we’re handing Tua the starting job because our backups fucking suck. You’re welcome.
Most of it is because the images and videos of him being contorted on the field are horrifying. All the other guys you’re talking about didn’t look like they experienced rigor mortis in front of millions of people.
My first memory of the fencing reaction was Jahvid Best for Cal back in like 2009. Hurdled a dude for a TD but was hit in the air by another player and hit the back of his head. Was on the ground for like 15 mins then went to the hospital. Turns out he had a concussion the week before as well. There were long term concerns for Best and he shut it down for the rest of the season despite him being a Heisman candidate at the time.
People can and have been killed in various Olympic sports just within the last decade or so. All you can do is mandate that things be as safe as possible and that people know the risks, and from there people have freedom to make their own personal choices, while society has the freedom to participate in that or not. You simply can't start forcing people to retire based on injuries. Where would you draw the line? How many concussions? What about other injuries? 5 knee surgeries probably affects your quality of later life a ton as well. Alex Smith nearly lost his leg entirely and came back.
Folks lazily rushing in with performative outrage and arguing "THE NFL SHOULD FORCE HIM OUT" every time he's on TV is also pretty worthless
