Anyone watching the World Team Trials this weekend? Should be good. Here's a motivational video for Jordan Burroughs
OSU wrestle offs going on now RS Freshman Micah Jordan won 15-3 over KeShawn Hayes for our 141 spot to replace Logan Stieber
I don't remember who else was active in the thread before the crash. Feel free to tag anyone. Think there are some Ok State posters
That sounds pretty awesome. OSU did an outdoor practice before the PSU football game and it seemed like it was pretty cool and went well
They make it sound like it wasn't a big deal for him to get there. I expected him to win but Hayes is good so the margin surprised me a bit even with his pedigree
I remember him wrestling 157 last year for part of the season. Tav over Haines 6-3 was probably a good match. I wonder what Haines future at OSU is with Snyder going to heavy when he returns.
November 14th. Iowa vs Oklahoma State wrestling at 11:00am. Iowa vs Minnesota football at 7:00pm. Should be a hell of a day.
Just going to quickly say that an outdoor meet at that time of year is a terrible idea. The mats are going to be hard as shit. Let's hope no one gets injured.
Don't know much about wrestling, but my son just started last year at his school. They will start back up in a week. Still trying to understand all the scoring and stuff too. He is excited because now that he is in 9th grade he can wrestle other high schoolers so he should get more matches. Last year they had a hard time getting him a match due to size.
Sorry I didn't even catch the edit when I quoted it. Looked good there. Good luck, hope he does well.
Thanks man! They introduced it 2 years ago at the school and last year as an 8th grader he was able to try it and he was instantly addicted. When my wife and I went to his first matches, we were instantly hooked as well. It is so exciting in person. There aren't many schools in Arkansas that have wrestling programs, but it is starting to grow.
That's awesome to hear. It's really big up here in Ohio. Easy to get hooked. The state tournament up here is something else. They fill the OSU basketball arena for it. Please give updates throughout the season
I can help. This sport takes a lot of work and repetition to reach the next levels. If he likes it, and has spring and summer free, he should wrestle in open tournaments and be trained by freelance coaches. What state are you in?
PSU 125 Meg 133 Conway/Guilbon 141 149 Retherford 157 Nolf 167 C. Rashard/Hammond 174 Nichol 184 McCutchen 197 MAC HWT Jan Johnson
We are in Arkansas. His coach at school has been coaching wrestling for 25 years. I think he's originally from Texas. They go through February with matches and meets and then they go into offseason football. He does some clinics and they workout during the spring and summer after they lift for football. The only time he has no wrestling workouts is during football season.
Wait til the big tournaments that happen in December/January and then the big tournament in the spring
That's good... Can't wrestle too much. The kids who don't play football should work their butts off as well. Your son is in 8th grade, right?
And if he's really interested, and you can afford it, send him up to camps at Iowa/ISU or at the Oklahoma schools
I think they have one at OBU in Arkadelphia, I think. He couldn't go to the one they went to last year because it was for high school only. When do those schools typically have camps?
Minnesota camp is a big deal as well.. J Robinson. https://jrobinsoncamps.com/ But 3 days training/week is a good goal to set. I started that as a sophomore and it made all of the difference in the world. Made the difference between me being a fringe state placer by my senior year to a nationally ranked one. It also helped that my freelance coach is one of the top freelance guys out there. If he coached a HS, they'd be state champs every year.
It's good to have multiple coaches imo. My HS coach is in the wrestling hall of fame, but I wouldn't have been half the wrestler if I wasn't coached by both of them (HS staff and freelance guy) with 2 completely different styles.
Yeah they definitely have different approaches. The head coach is more of a traditionalist and the MMA guy teaches a lot of their escapes.
Missed this thread and to the Oracle my best advice as a former HS coach and Freestyle/Greco Roman coach is to send him to wrestling camp in the summer and find a freestyle/Greco Roman wrestling club to wrestle in the off season. Wrestling in the off season will help your son become a better football player than football camp will. Alex Mack - California State Champ 2* rivals center pro bowl center. Ray Lewis Florida State Champ. Hundreds more NFLers who wrestled in HS and even some who wrestled in college.
Nebraska has a two week stretch of Minnesota, @Penn State, @Ohio State, Iowa. Yeesh. Winning one seems realistic, winning two would be incredible, anything more would mean we are probably having a top 5 season. Can't wait for the year to get started.
Not sure if anyone is watching on ESPNU right now, but that was an outstanding match between Brewer and Heil. Brewer is so much fun to watch.
