Dave Schultz is regarded as one of the top 10 American wrestlers of all time, but his Olympic gold medal has the world's biggest asterisk next to it--the Soviets and Iranians boycotted the games that year. USA won 7 golds and 2 silvers. He doesn't make my top 10 because of that. Give me John Smith, Jordan Burroughs, Bruce Baumgartner, Lee Kemp, and Kyle Snyder. Bunch of guys can stake claims to being top 10 after that, but I'll take those 5 and feel really good about em.
This is how Kenny Courts went from not competing for 2 years to qualifying for World Team Trials. Down 9-0 against a junior world champ and probably top 10 wrestler in the weight class internationally.
It would be a real shame if DeSanto ends up at RU after all that shit I talked when Delvecchio broke him. A real shame.
We get it that Rutgers likes to lick up all the sloppy seconds it can get. Let's hope next year is the year you can crack the Top 10 despite having one of the best wrestling states.
Most probably do not make a lot, but I do believe Kyle Snyder and Jordan Burroughs are the two exceptions to that rule in the US. If Kyle is not the highest paid wrestler in country he needs to fire whomever represented him in those negotiations.
Kurt McHenry to Michigan That makes things a lot more interesting moving forward, Michigan gonna be legit
I'm starting to think that maybe they're going to be the #2 team in the country. Just feel like that program is on the rise, Bormet is the guy behind their success and he's in charge now. If they can get a couple more guys like McHenry/Silva/Parris/Lewan they will be title contenders in 5 years. 2021 lineup: 125: Kurt McHenry FR 133: Drew Mattin SR 141: Joey Silva SO 149: Kanen Storr SR 157: Layne Van Anroy JR 165: Wil Lewan SO 174: 184: Jelani Embree JR 197: 285: Mason Parris SO
Just realized that they're going to be a powerhouse in 2020 even if McHenry redshirts 125: Mattin JR 133: Micic SR 141: Silva FR 149: Storr JR 157: Lewan FR 165: Massa SR 174: Amine SR 184: Embree SO 197: Striggow? SR 285: Parris FR Don't see how that's not a top 3 team.
What’s the rumor? The only thing that’s out there right now is he might flip with BN next season. I think he’s pretty comfortable at PSU and if not we have Cassar. If he is leaving for some reason he’s stupid. He’s at the best wrestling school, a starter, and a need in the upper weights.
Depends who you put that lineup against? It looks nice on paper but 2020 is still a long way out. Remember Mason Manville looked really good in a PSU singlet and Cenzo was a reach. Now Manville is about 25 and has never wrestled for PSU and Cenzo is a two X NCAA champ. Things change...
We sat next to the families at Nationals and his girlfriend had a lock Haven shirt at one point. Didn't make any sense at the time.
Duane Goldman retiring after 26 years as HC at Indiana former Hoosier Angel Escobedo to take over as HC immediately
Obvious hire, well done. In Rutgers news, Anthony Ashnault does get his 6th year as expected and will wrestle at 149 next year. He might be the favorite if he's healthy. Not much established up there outside of Kolodzik.
If you want to see the best wrestlers in the country/american heroes wrestle on TV this weekend, the Freestyle world cup is on NBCSN and the Olympic Channel today and tomorrow. USA kicks things off with India at 10 AM central (in one hour) then wrestles Japan at 2:30 PM CT. They get Georgia and presumably the gold medal match against AZE tomorrow. I don't think TV will show it but Aliyev is wrestling Valdes Tobier at 65kg this morning. That is a BANGER.
Some notable US matches today. Gilman-Takahashi gold medal rematch sticks out for sure, let's see how Gilman adjusts. 57 kilograms — Thomas Gilman (United States) vs. Amit Kumar (India) The two-day tournament in Carver-Hawkeye Arena kicks off with a clash of World silver medalists. Kumar reached the World finals in 2013 as a 19-year-old. He dropped a 2-1 decision in the gold medal match to Iran’s Hassan Rahimi. He’s trying to get back on international wrestling’s biggest podium for the first time since then. Gilman made a run to the World finals last year in his debut at the Senior-level World Championships. They wrestled in December at the World Clubs Cup in Iran. Gilman won a 6-3 decision. 61 kilograms — Kendric Maple (United States) vs. Sandeep Tomar (India) Maple wrapped up 2017 by collecting his first big international tournament title, winning the Medved International in September. It was a follow-up to a second-place finish at the World Team Trials and his first U.S. Open title. Tomar, an Olympian in 2016, placed seventh last year at the World Championships at 57 kilograms. He lost to eventual-champion Yuki Takahashi in the second round and lost in the repechage against bronze medalist Bekhbayar Erdenebat of Mongolia. 57 kilograms — Thomas Gilman (United States) vs. Yuki Takahashi (Japan) A rematch of last year’s World title bout. Takahashi won 6-0 in Paris, but Gilman had his chances. Takahashi countered a Gilman attack in the opening seconds and ran the former Iowa star out of bounds for a caution and two. Gilman got to Takahashi’s legs five more times in the match but couldn’t convert. 79 kilograms — Kyle Dake (United States) vs. Sohsuke Takatani (Japan) Those associated with USA Wrestling were thrilled last summer when United World Wrestling announced its new weights and introduced the 79- and 92-kilogram classes, which enabled the Americans to squeeze Jordan Burroughs, Kyle Dake, David Taylor and J’den Cox into the same lineup. Dake spent the early years of his freestyle career bouncing from 74 kilograms to 86 and back down to 74 last year. He figures to be a World medal threat if he can lock down the spot on the American World Team. Takatani is also moving up from 74 kilograms, where he was a World silver medalist in 2014.
Gilman gets a forfeit, then Joe Colon gets a really nice win over Sandeep Tomar of India. Really starting to think Colon is going to be our guy at 61kg this year.
lmao this poor indian kid just got thrown into a lion cage against kyle dake. Dake walks up to him at the bell, picks him up, throws him onto his head for 5, then whips him for another 2. Took about 7 seconds to score 7 points. Got another 4 shortly after. Dude is on a mission.

The university said a person recently came forward to accuse Dr. Richard Strauss, who died in 2005, of sexual misconduct. The person said there were multiple victims over a period of time, said Chris Davey, an Ohio State spokesman. The allegations include acts of sexual misconduct with student-athletes and other instances of sexual misconduct, the university said. Ohio State has not been able to reach any of his family members, Davey said. The school also is not aware of any past criminal charges or lawsuits against Strauss, he said. Strauss was an associate professor of medicine at Ohio State. An article in the campus newspaper from 1984 said he was selected to test Olympic athletes for illegal drug use during the summer games in Los Angeles. Other articles published during the 1980s indicated Strauss studied injury rates among wrestlers and other athletes, as well as the effects of steroid use. The university said the state attorney general has appointed a Columbus law firm to act as an independent investigator for each allegation. The school also said it has notified law enforcement. The state attorney general's office said Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigation will assist police, should it be needed. The timing of the allegations range from the mid-1970s through the late 1990s, the university said, but it does not yet know the exact years Strauss worked as a team doctor. Ohio State said it will publicly release the results of the investigation when it is finished. It also asked anyone who experienced sexual misconduct while at the university to contact the school. ___
Takahashi-Gilman going down now. Gilman said before the match he's gonna rip his head off, let's see what happens
Gilman comes really hot with heavy clubs and a what looked to me like a stiff jab to Takahashi's orbital bone. Heavy hands from both fighters--Japan goes on shot clock and Gilman leads 1-0 at the break. Zero shots from either side. Gilman gets in on a single early in 2nd, Takahashi gets a deep whizzer, Gilman limp arms and nearly exposes JPN but ref says no. Gilman gets to legs again but is countered and down 2-1 with 1:12 left. Gilman gets to the legs for a third time but it is not a committed attack and he is countered again, 4-1. That's how it ends. Very good match, more competitive than the first, but Takahashi is really good.
