Love the new single from 49 Winchester Edit: Missed this on the last page but I enjoy it so much I'm leaving it
I watched them last night in Chicago and was super disappointed. I didn’t really know them from their prime. I grew up listening to country and “re-found” country music which isn’t the stuff on the radio last summer. This thread introduced me to Turnpike. I love Diamonds & Gasoline, but each subsequent album is incrementally less what I like. I couldn’t understand any of the words - even to songs I know really well. And they had zero stage presence. They spoke maybe 3 times and each song had a vibe killing 15+ second pause before the next. I still enjoyed it and had a good time but they have so much upside vs how they actually perform.
I experienced the same thing at Red Rocks. Thought it could have been they were cold and then it started raining. Possibly they’re all just doing it for the paycheck now
Damn that sucks. Evan is definitely more tortured poet than entertainer, and you never quite know what you’re going to get from him.
Evan wasn't great pre sobriety either. Saw them on the first tour back, he was better but he's definitely not a great hype man. He's a great musician but his stage presence is lacking
I've been going to Turnpike shows since Diamonds and Gasoline when they were playing bars in front of 50 people. I think Evan has significant nerves/stage fright playing huge crowds, this was also a factor that caused him to abuse alcohol. It's true he used to be much more loose on stage, now that they're playing 10k plus venues he tends to stare ahead just focusing on getting the lyrics out. I can't hate because I'd be the same way, and their shows I've gone to have all still been pretty crisp. But he's just not a showman like Zach Bryan or even Shane Smith, just not who he is especially if he's sober. Honestly my biggest complaint since they've come back is their sound guy isn't very good or something sounds a little off in these bigger venues. I always have a heard time hearing Evan and the fiddle but the bass guitar is absolutely blaring.
spotify still has me in a <1k listens hole. so i get some weird ones lately. i really like this new album, especially Besides Myself and One More Time Before You Go.
i loved the old name. the new one, idk they haven’t really released much under it. all my favorite tunes and live shows were as the old band.
I’ve seen them a ton but their most recent show at the Beacon Theater in NYC - a historic and storied venue - was one of the most sterile concerts I’ve ever seen. Evan was emotionless, said zero words to the crowd, and the sound was way off.
This album seems promising. Glad she pivoted away from whatever the hell Sadler was trying to do with the last album.
That Morgan Wade is going to be very good, it seems. Excited for whatever Bella White has cooking up, too.
that Twisters movie will probably be terrible but their soundtrack has some good names on it--Childers, Red Clay Strays, Flatland Cavalry, Wyatt Flores among others.
Saw a new trailer for it and I am no longer excited about it. Spoiler Glen Powell drives along side tornados and shoots little rockets into it to disrupt the tornado. They just used the idea of Trump bombing hurricanes. So fucking dumb. I'm still gonna watch
Nikki Lane, Sierra Ferrell, and Lana Del Ray playing a small bar in Woodruff is crazy. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/Lva7AriAoguvrSBB/?mibextid=WC7FNe
literally in the dumbest timeline when something like hawk tuah makes you famous. Social media and influencing has ruined this fucking country.
She did lose her job teaching and I'm guessing will have a hard time finding a new job for a very long time
