Iirc, he's bipolar as fuck and battles depression extremely bad. I remember seeing him in 2016 in front of a packed house and he looked miserable as all fuck. I couldn't help but thinking that he was bringing so many people joy while visibly hating every second of it.
Was thinking about Doug Moreland reading these and got so confused. Don't think I've ever heard any John Moreland stuff
Your homework for today should be to listen to the albums "In the Throes" and "High on Tulsa Heat" Here's a couple songs
Not that John doesn’t have his issues and personal demons, but…Team Moreland? “At this point, I’ve hung out with him five, six times. I don’t like this motherfucker. Like, am I supposed to be upset?” Moreland continues by saying that “if I was asked to be on the album today, I wouldn’t do it. I don’t want to be on an album with a dude who is a dickhead to my wife and my friends right in front of me every time I see him. I don’t want to be on an album with a dude who I’ve heard tell borderline racist jokes more than once. I don’t want to be on an album with a dude who brings a 19-year-old girl in the bar, and then when they tell him she can’t be in there, looks at me like I’m supposed to have his fucking back. I don’t like that person.” He repeats a second time “I don’t like that person.” In conclusion, Moreland says: “That’s who thinks I’m an asshole? Fine. As far as I’m concerned, getting kicked off a Zach Bryan album is way fucking cooler than being on a Zach Bryan album.” https://variety.com/2025/music/news/zach-bryan-john-moreland-doubles-down-beef-responds-1236393492/
i figured this beef was Oklahoma stuff. never loved Moreland so much, or heard anything that led me to a deep dive.
Isbell has a cover of that one on YouTube from way back before he lost all the weight and recorded Southeastern.
have been looking forward to this. the early releases are my favorite songs tho, Flannel Cowboy, Coyote(w John Moreland), and Days Getting Darker.
There’s a new book called in-law country that attempts to answer the question in the thread title and the authors answer was basically Garth Brooks did it.
CBS Saturday Morning show did a nice feature on Evan Felker and Turnpike performed 3 songs this morning. So great to see Evan sober and happy.
Anybody for Birmingham go to Charles Wesley Godwin with Drayton Farley opening? Looks like it would have been a great show.
New McMurtry album is very enjoyable. I think the new JRW was heavily influenced by him coming out relatively fine (when I saw him live a few months ago he said it'll take years to truly be in the clear but all was looking positive) from cancer so it's more upbeat, Jimmy Buffett-influenced I believe he said. Definitely different.
Thanks for the heads up on the new McMurtry album and now over got something to listen to on my drive home today.
