Every team in the B1G is gonna do this shit, no one is going to willingly let the air raid thrive like the dumbass DC's in the B12 and P12 have done for years
I've never understood why officials think "defense has to be given a chance to sub" means "I have to stand over the ball for a defense to slowly sub and take 20+ seconds when they're clearly doing this on purpose to waste time". Seems like there's a pretty obvious middle ground there. I haven't watched Bama in a while, but I know they used to do this a lot back when it first started to become a thing.
It looks like it’s “3 seconds” that start once the offense has completed its substitution and then defense has to get guys off and on “at a reasonable pace”. Refs can put the ball into play if they think the defense is moving too slowly. For some reason, I thought the defense had x number of seconds to complete their substitution once the offense is done, but I guess not. Imo that’s more reasonable. Give the defense 15 seconds (or whatever the right amount of time is) and then the offense can go whether the defense is set or not. Leaving it up to interpretation just opens the door for refs to apply the rule inconsistently
Saw one game the DL ran on so slowly, the play clock ran down and the offense got a delay of game. I don’t really know why every team wouldn’t just have their guy walk as slowly as possible onto the field
In the tweet posted Riley had to burn a timeout to keep from getting one which doesn't seem right. I would have been losing my mind with the ref for doing that but Riley didn't for whatever reason
On the play in that tweet, SC made the sub with just under 25 seconds and the ref gave Utah until 3 on the clock to sub. There's just no way that's how that is supposed to be done from an officiating standpoint. And it was clearly taught that way because no defense would sub like that normally.
Lots of teams are during this currently. It is so dumb for offenses to substitute 15-20 seconds into the play clock to allow this.
Leach would have been fun to see teams try that on him He would have just never subbed on O the rest of the game
Oregon did this against Wazzu on Saturday, they’d sub in and out in response with the looping arc of a rainbow instead of a straight line. The refs still always held the ball until the DL was set. It’s a fun little loophole at the moment.
I'd say it's air raid that exists to exploit loopholes. "You need to give the defense time to follow-up your feverish substitutions" doesn't sound like a loophole. Sounds like the one, single rule that exists to help defenses out anymore
Sure, but it’s that estimation of “reasonable” that’s a bit problematic. Waiting for the subbed player to completely exit the field before sending on his replacement seems to stretch that definition. If the refs are going to let you do it though, more power to you, I guess.
Jesus what a fucking baby. I thought USC fans were crazy when they were worried he’d get out of there within a couple of years, but in starting to believe it. He doesn’t seem to be adjusting well to Southern California. Should have stayed at Oklahoma
Guy is from Muleshoe Texas Thinking he's gunna be at home in fucking Los Angeles is dumb at the very least
I am firm in my conviction that LSU should have hired Riley and USC should have hired Kelly. But for comedic purposes this way is much better.
Not a defense of him, but do a lot of coaches interact with students or faculty? I can't imagine most do. Some of that other stuff is stupid on his part.
Saban does a meet-and-greet with all new students matriculating and is a regular in the academic halls, just cutting it up with teachers and students. But that's because Spoiler
Yes Especially faculty......unless they're giant assholes, man babies, or all doped up on Xanz like Taggart
I think the thought process is he would have access to enough Cali guys to be respectable on defense. Them we learned he does not care about defense or special teams at all. I laughed when Williams scored and the announcers said it was now up to SCs defense.
Some of us were surprised that Williams even scored. As bad as the defense continues to be the offense has been very musty and average since the 2nd half of the Colorado game. This game this weekend against Cal may not be easy and if we don't win, this team can easily and will probably lose the rest of the games.
