It does quite a bit, but yes it’s helping you control your hunger and eat less. High level summary. Food stays in your stomach longer. It promotes insulin release ands blocks glucagon, lowering your blood sugar. It works on signaling pathways that tell you if you’re hungry or satiated. This combined with its effect on addiction, including eating disorders, is what makes them so effective.
Did a report on it in pharmacology class way back in the day. Remember you could order it from Canada. Body building people online were saying they would take it and lay in an ice bath to try and keep their body temps out of the danger levels. Basically it keeps your body from creating ATP (energy), instead of generating ATP the reaction just generates heat. Body just keeps burning fuel because it needs ATP so you just turn into an oven. Reports of people dying with 110+ degree fevers.
Just got prescribed Zepbound. Insurance doesn’t cover it, so I’ll be out of pocket (until I can switch insurers during my company’s open enrollment in November). Applied for the savings card through Lilly. So looking at $550 a month?
That’s right. You should call your insurance company and ask if they cover Wegovy. Zepbound does tend to work slightly better but if it’s costing $500/month, that difference likely isn’t worth it. After you change insurance in November, you can always switch to Zepbound if you need to. I assume you don’t have diabetes, but if you do, there are some other options your insurance is more likely to cover (Ozempic, Moujaro, and others).
My insurance doesn’t cover any of these meds. I’ve asked about all of them. It’s all out of pocket. My doc actually wrote me a prescription for both Ozempic and Zepbound so I could choose which one I wanted to fill. Zepbound is the cheaper out of pocket option for now.
I’m getting compounded semaglutide (wegovy) from hims for $200/mo which isn’t covered by insurance. It’s more expensive if you choose a shorter treatment plan, but still cheaper than what you’ve got. It doesn’t come in an applicator like others so you have to dose and stick yourself though. It wasn’t near as bad as I expected and have no issue giving myself the shots now. Down 6 pounds (~3%) in almost 3 weeks.
Need some reassurance on these weight loss injections before I dive in. My doctor prescribed me Mounjairo two months ago. The day I was going to take my first dose, I read an article about GLP-1 meds causing stomach paresis in some patients. Psyched me right out. I already take Metformin which occasionally causes GI issues so don't want to compound things by taking both. I lost 40 lbs a year ago by basically eating ~2000 calories and walking 2 miles a day. As soon as I fell off the wagon, the weight came pouring back on. Just want to lose the weight and keep it off this time.
Metfoemin and ozempic and I generally feel a lot better overall from a stomach perspective. I was also able to cut metformin back, so that may help as well. Overeating definitely is not a good time on the stomach.
Fiber lots of water 100 grams of protein 1500 calories , nothing late to sit on your stomach 5-7 miles a day No special diet, I’ll still drink, occasionally eat shitty pizza, fries, etc, just a lot less of it and not hungry Beats years of keto and IF Back under 200 and down 70 this year on Zepbound
As a follow up I do find some of the thoughts from the glucose revolution book helpful movement after all intake of food eat veggies first, then proteins and fats, and then carbs more Whole Foods eat occasional sugar as a dessert after you’ve had a meal and not just by itself to avoid random blood sugar spikes and crashes drink ranch water over beer and wine small changes that help , could just be a placebo effect in addition to the added steps and weekly injections I also really like the better brand bagels and buns and usually switch between smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels and protein shakes for breakfast and some type of Sandwich or smash burger on a better bun for lunch and a sensible dinner the better brand has been a game changer for me the bagel has 26 g of protein and 40 carbs of which 35 grams are fiber same thing for the bun. Just don’t eat one of each in the same day lol
Ended up having to go with Mounjaro. For some reason the discount code wouldn’t work with Zepbound, but it worked with Mounjaro. Picked it up today and just did my first injection. That $550 was a tough pill to swallow, but hopefully it will be worth it.
I was asking for a link or specifics as a 6’1” 200lbish man approaching 40 Seems like a decent expense for some
https://www.healthline.com/health-news/ways-ozempic-wegovy-improve-health#Heart-attack-and-stroke lots of exciting stuff on the horizon outside of whatever his personal reason is for paying cash for it (again, weight loss, substance abuse, on and on)
For me at 6 feet, I need to be sub 185 to be “healthy” BMI I started at 265 earlier this year on 5 mg shot at 190 now I think it’s funny looking at me to think I’m still “overweight” as I have defined calf and quad muscles and arm muscle definition between shoulders, triceps, and bicep, not bodybuilder by any means, but they’re there just with a dad Bod belly but with pants that are loose at 32 x 32 I’m going to switch to “maintenance” once I hit 180 which should be in two months meaning that I’ll go from weekly injections to semi and then monthly as long I’m maintaining As far as why anyone would need it, they could’ve fucked their insulin resistance and metabolism like I did by following paleo or keto or whatever I have not been dieting per se on the shot , just eating less, portion control, better choices but still enjoying a summer bbq and some drinks look at my 5 year graph I get fucked every summer and football season as soon as I had alcohol and carbs with this shot I might have a day or two of added weight and then it’s right back off and a steady drop as I continue to move and workout during the week working out and being active is fun again and not just another chore to check off I’m not having to cut out food groups I had grilled grouper and couscous tonight on keto, I would’ve been fucked by the couscous when all I ate was a 6 oz filet of fish and had a cup of cous cous and some asparagus
yes sir, it’s funny, my wife gets mad when people we haven’t seen since the holidays or earlier the year see me and go oh my god are you on a shot yes , yes I am not ashamed , went from a double chin to an Adam’s apple , it’s a big difference and people want to know what happened (one person asked if I was sick as I was in a suit and they couldn’t see my arms which are pretty vascular now) she’s like it’s not just the shot he runs now ( I interval run where I run then walk then run and listen to pod casts or my 70s rock or alternative music my kids roll their eyes at in the car), he drinks water all the time, takes vitamins and electrolytes, he eats 3 times a day ( yes im not starving myself I just know now by my palm size and fingers how much a serving size should be and I was eating a lot more before without realizing), he lifts weights ( I do peloton and Fitbod workouts with 20-35 dumbbells for an hour a day 3/4 times a week) but yes the shot changed something for me cause I was doing some of that before and I would steadily just climb back up happy to answer any questions anyone might have as it’s been a huge success for me
No one gives a shit about your chin. How many extra inches we packing now that the Dunlop is out of the way?
On and the better brand ( I should be a spokesperson) just came out with Hawaiian rolls my wife is always asked to bring ham and Swiss sliders to tailgates she takes 12 Hawaiian buns , cuts them all in half so you’ve got a sheet of bread underneath they layer of Swiss then ham then another layer of Swiss, then put the sheet of the buns on top and brush it all with a butter, poppy seed, mustard , onion, garlic paste she makes And then bakes those would fuck me up on the scale every football weekend and new years now with the fiber and low net carbs I should be all right
I’m 5’-7” and was 215 when I started a month ago. Ideally I should probably be at 160 without any strength training, but realistically my goal is 180 with just dieting. Got tired of having a closet full of clothes that didn’t fit and being tired all the time. Down 8.5 lbs now just by cutting out snacking and eating normal portion sizes which I didn’t have the willpower before to do. I’ve also found I’m craving healthier, lighter foods.
Weight wise about to cross 30lbs lost since Feb on wegovy. Nice lb/week clip. Stalled a few times but that’s natural and I can still feel my body slimming/changing when that happens. Peloton and simple home exercises are my workouts. Still not restricting myself of anything if I want to eat it, I just have way more control. Over halfway to my goal weight. Ready to add real bike rides back in when it cools off some.
Down 14lbs after the first month. Upped my dosage to 5mg with today’s dose. Feeling good so far, but the $550 a month is still a tough pill to swallow.
Yes but what made me feel better was the offset costs and savings from eating less. didn’t realize how much until I analyzed spending pre and post. that might make you feel better, it worked for me
Yeah definitely spending less on food. This week was my one week a month in the office, I’m usually going to the snack bar 3-4 times a day to get something or walking 3-4 minutes to the Chick-fil-A for breakfast. I haven’t been once all week to either.
Confirmed my insurance won't cover Zep and won't cover Ozempic with out a diabetes prescription. Are most in here getting it through the Zep coupon outside of insurance? I know there were some compounding places offering it as well.
Yeah paying out of pocket outside of insurance. Both times I got it filled the pharmacist was like it looks like your insurance doesn’t cover it, you might want to call your doctor. The looks and their face when I told them I know and I’m paying out of pocket. Sir this prescription is $550. Yes, I know. Here is my debit card. *total shock like they can’t believe someone can afford it*
Just mind numbingly stupid that the insurance companies won't pay for it for most people Anybody understand how that stuff works and if it's actually something that is in the works for insurance to start paying for? I kind of assume that since it's beneficial to overall health of so many Americans, that some industry will be blocking it from being approved for use as a weight loss drug and paid for by insurers
Started 2.5 of Mounjaro 3 weeks ago. Actually take my 3rd injection tomorrow. Walking outside 10 miles a week and keeping my calorie count to 2000-2500 a day, I'm down 13lbs. Goal is 65lbs so 20% there.
I don't think I've mentioned it in here, but wife has been on a compound called semi-glutide for a couple or three months now and it's really working well She is on me to go see the same doctor and get on it, but damn I'm not sure I can afford my mortgage if I add another 4 to 5 hundred dollars a month to my bills
I pop in here from time to time but not enough to follow/remember the convo so if I’ve already mentioned this, whoops. It’s kinda wild how many people in my orbit have tried to get Ozempic/Wegovy (all with good insurance), only to be told no, who then are recommended a super covered bariatric surgery instead.
Weight loss drugs are considered “life style” drugs and aren’t on the standard formulary, they are on a rider. Employers have to actively make the decision to offer the coverage. Many employers offered the coverage back in the day because the cost was cheap but with new gen drugs being effective, everyone wants them and costs are going up so employers are dropping that coverage. Eventually the data will be so strong and the costs will come down and it will be a standard listed product but we aren’t there yet.
