I haven't been to KC since living there in the early 90s, but is Stroud's Chicken still a thing? I enjoyed that place, that and Arthur Bryant's.
I need to come back to KC at some point. I liked it when I lived there as a kid, but I haven't been back in a long time.
Live in MHK now. Tallgrass Taphouse and Bourbon & Baker are awesome for food/drinks and they are right next to each other on Poyntz Ave.
I've been here since the beginning but mostly lurk. UCF grad that went into the army and was sent to Riley 2 years ago.
KC is on the short list of "next" cities to get the huge influx of young professionals and economic boom. Portland, Austin, Nashville, etc. Already started and I enjoy it when I go see Grandma Lyrtch.
Joes is amazing, but you probably don't wanna wait 45-1 hour to eat. Char Bar, McCoys, Q39, Beer Kitchen are all fantastic food options. If you're under 30, don't go to PnL. Go to Westport. Kelly's is a great bar if you're already shitfaced. Alehouse is one of the best all around bars in KC. I'd probably recommend Char Bar most to start at. Great beers, great food, awesome patio. Then go to Alehouse or Harpo's.
Grew up in Lawrence, spent the last 10 years in Chicago and started thinking of moving to KC. The cost of living and the weather wasn't an issue for me in my 20s in Chicago but now the appeal of KC is starting to sound more and more appealing.
+1,000 to Char Bar, it's starting to get to the time of the year where that patio is a great time every weekend. I'm also excited to start frequenting the roofs of Up Down, Alehouse, and to a lesser extent, John's Big Deck and O'Dowd's.
Coco Bolos is terrible. If you're eating in Aggieville, So Long Saloon and get the Resist Temptation burger, or be filled with regret for the rest of your days.
Yeah I didn't want Croomsday to get confused, was going to point this out. Oklahoma Joe's = Joe's KC.
If you want a BYOB titty bar The Outhouse a little outside of Lawrence that could be fun. Open til 4am
Are you thinking of the cashew? It's upstairs is nice when they open everything up but I'm pretty sure it's closed now.
Couple of restaurant suggestions I didn't see mentioned: LC's for BBQ (off the beaten path down in the hood, but I love it), Grinders (in the Crossroads district downtown, been on Triple Ds) and Beer Kitchen (in Westport). Bar Rosso in Hotel Sorella is good easy pickings for some dirty legs late at night. Strip clubs in KCMO are horrid, on the KS side my favorite place is Bonita Flats. It's a dive, but the talent is better than what you'd expect on the weekends and drinks are cheap as shit.
Yeah, was bought by two local entrepreneurs and is undergoing renovation and concept/name change. I believe it's the guys involved with starting the Westport Ale House.
Pro tip: don't have kids if you enjoy any of these places because you'll never go again. #newbabylife
Bret Springs, he also brought Coal Vines to KC. Also brought goodcents to dallas, I think we won that trade.
Downtown was pretty interesting last night with the Big 12 Championship and the Trump rally happening at the same time.
Checked out the Plaza and I fucking love the architecture.Went to Black Dog Coffeehouse and had the toast (). Checked out Aggieville, ate at Taco Lucha (that blackberry black bean dip is god damn good.) and came away very impressed with MHK in general. KSU's new renovations to the engineering building are top notch. I also really like the exterior of BSFS and they're doing some renovations to the stands that will improve the atmosphere even more, I'm almost certain. I'm pretty excited about coming back when we play you guys in a few years. Allen Fieldhouse blew me away that's a god damn amazing gym. KU's campus was cool and the town was okay. Going to the Negro League Museum and Boulevard Brewery tour tomorrow. Kansas City is fucking awesome. I could definitely live here.
Also any dinner recommendations on where to take my gf in the city tomorrow night? I want to surprise her with my knowledge of KC.
I was looking at that. How much would that run me? I just saw it at the bottom of the menu. Definitely interested
Place is run by a married couple, both James Beard award recipients. After dinner, I recommend going to the Reiger Hotel in the crossroads. The Hotel used to be owned by the Reiger family, who used to be big in the distillery business prior to Prohibition. The Great Grandson, Andy Reiger, restarted his great grandfathers distillery from old recipies he found from his family's heirlooms. The distillery is located down in the West Bottoms and is open to tours. Anyway, after your first drink at the hotel, ask your bartender if you can check out Manifesto's. This is the 'speak easy' that Reiger Hotel runs in the basement. They make some fantastic cocktails and it is a super intimate setting.
