this for nymphs and dries, lefty loop for streamers and popper. when using conventional gear i tie a palomar.
After breaking off, the line was typically straight and not very curly. I'm changing knots anyways. I lost some snapper the other weekend when I shouldn't have because the knot didn't hold up.
What leader are you using? I used a shitty one one time and it broke off like crazy. I still break off with this 15 lb flouro but only in oyster beds
have gotten pretty happy with my blood knots and perfection loops for connecting fly lines, tippets, and leaders.
When snapper fishing we were using mono, I'm not sure what pound it was. Someone else brought it. But noone else was losing fish like me. Definitely was the knot. Yesterday I was just using 10 # mono as my leader with a treble hook when the lady fish were breaking me off.
Spent like $250 at Academy on Saturday. Wade boots, lip gripper, wade basket, wade belt, matrix shad, pliers, fishing shirts, and probably other shit I'm forgetting. That place is dangerous.
Trying to decide what I want to get for my next boat. Want something with higher gunwales for the wife and kids that were trying to have (not pregnant yet). Something with a deeper V that handles chop better. But still want to be able to get relatively skinny for fishing in the bayous. Really like the 24.7 sportsman I fished in a few weekends ago. A friend was trying to tell me to get a Twin V but they are super expensive. Also considering Sea Hunt. Key West is really nice if you can find one that's a few years used for a good price. I have friends with deep V boats that can't fish half the spots I fish.
I do blood knots for leader to tippet and the orvis knot for flies. The toothpick method for blood knots is a life saver.
i have never seen the toothpick trick until today. that probably would have saved me a lot of time last month when i hand tied 8 bass leaders.
Look at us talking knots and shit We're some cool mother fuckers. Mostly palomar or improved depending on stuff. Need to improve loop knot game for doubling my crappie jigs and running crankbaits.
Id move after my first ladyfish. Problem solved. Loop knot on everything except for baits that come with a split ring.
Loop knot for all end flies, everyone gather round the knot and fly tying table for grown man arts and crafts.
Used to work on a charter boat on weekends in high school, tying lots of knots for rich guys who couldn’t cast or got broken off.
Yah I was fishing a barrier island shoreline that is known to hold trout and redfish. Had the trolling motor going and was moving around a lot. But the entire side of the island I was on was thick with ladyfish. Definitely wasn't staying in one spot. Eventually just gave up and drove back to the boat ramp.
just confused the hell out of me. I just caught. 20 Inch red off the same spot. Came back and thought I had a toad fish. I was a good 2 miles into a creek and there was a gator to my left. Didn’t think they would be that far back there.
At that size, they can be extremely difficult to distinguish without getting into super fine details like lateral line scales and dorsal/anal fin rays. The darker color, chain like pattern with “squares”, and a very thin white margin on the caudal fin all point towards this being a black.
I went out there Sunday. Was there before sunrise and called it quits around 7. Had two guys that were masochists and kept trying to fight through the bluefish and ladyfish that showed up later. After they lost $50 in tackle, they quit too. I just fought two jacks on an 8wt to kill time while they were fishing.
I keep my boat in Mississippi for most of the summer. I ran to the north side of Cat. I wish the Biloxi Marsh had bigger fish because there are way fewer, if any, boats at times.
I was talking to some dudes that were wading Ship in the same area as me. They said they went to Chandy the day before with live croaker and struck out. The only guy that was catching fish on the north side grass beds at Ship was on a slick. Everyone else I talked to got skunked. How has Cat Island been ? August gets really tough for catching fish. I've heard ppl say they just stop fishing in August.
I haven’t been as much as I used to go because of kids, but Cat has been okay since some salinity pushed in a couple of weeks ago. I only throw artificial so late summer can be tough. I’ll work topwaters and a couple of other baits and then quit. I went to Ship back in May? A couple of times and one time it was on fire. I was wading a and caught 5 fish over 24.” I took some clients back two days later and it was horrible. The islands produce well in the spring pattern, but as you know, it was unfishable this year due to the winds. I’m surprised they’re not better because all of the freshwater the Pearl has dumped - you would think it would move fish west. But basically you have to find which trough they’re running and hammer it once you find it. Then move deeper after the sun comes up. I’ll really fish Dec-March, my favorite times. Lots of great fish can be found around Pascagoula, Gulfport Harbor, BSL, etc.
I honestly catch way more fish in the bayous than I ever do at the islands but it is way more fun to run the boat out to the island. I catch fish in Fort Bayou, Davis Bayou, and Graveline. I always hear good reports of people crushing trout on croaker in the grassbeds at Ship in June. They seem to turn off in July. Feel like I hear of more fish being caught at Cat than Ship or Horn. Have heard all the islands hold fish year round.
you can definitely catch more inside. One problem is there are just so many more people out at the islands than there were even 4-5 years ago. Maybe checkout Gulfport Harbor this winter via kayak. You won’t see many pictures on the internet of the area because those guys don’t want more people around, but it yields 10+lb trout.
Going deep sea fishing for a bachelor party in a couple weeks. How do I keep myself from puking my guts up on the boat whilst nursing an inevitable hangover?
if you have a sensitive stomach you'll probably throw up either way then. dramamine helps but I hate mixing that with booze, personally. honestly just bloody mary up, hope for the best, and play it off if it does happen. then rally.
Are Gump and yourself fishing in 10-20 feet of depth with this discussion? Cast and cover area? I'm taking that you're not fishing artificial reefs of 50' or bouncing off the bottom.
these islands are surrounded by grass beds in the 1-4 foot range, with it dropping off to ~10-15 feet when you’re off the flats. Basically like all the northern gulf islands: Dauphin, chandelier, etc.
Back to our small lake last night. Fishing was slower by comparison, but those that we caught were nice. My friend drove back to his house with me holding a creel of crappie out the window, he forgot plastic bags... The 14" is the biggest we've caught there, the other pic is a 12". One Bass that wasn't bad either. A couple more smaller crappie, a couple bluegill, and it was time to head in. I'm jealous of all you saltwater guys down south!
scopalmnine patch at pharmacy. Pharmacist can prescribe in Florida but most don’t know they can. If not you need a doctor to write for it. I’ve also been team throw up quick and feel fine after that.
