You might as well listen to the 30 year anniversary of the OJ chase show Show opens with Runaway Jim and has OJ references all night. The next night at UIC pavilion is an all timer of the genre. For to the second call outs, I'm much more equipped for 97-98 Ghost, Gin, or Carini - this era of 93-94 just let it rip because it flies one song to the next.
Dopapod hanging it up after this year -- "indefinite hiatus." Feels like jam bands just aren't doing as well on the road as they used to and that sounds like a big part of this. Hell, heard Umphrey's had a decent number of empty seats a Red Rocks this weekend and even UM Bowl didn't sell out. Band statement in spoilers. Spoiler
It’s time for my annual religious experience tonight. There’s so much to unpack here but I’ve talked about this show ad nauseam. I get chills just looking at the setlist. It’s perfect. Phish • 1994-06-18 (02:50:49) • UIC Pavilion, University of Illinois, Chicago, IL https://relisten.net/phish/1994/06/18?source=162776 PHISH, SATURDAY 06/18/1994 UIC PAVILION, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS Chicago, IL SET 1: Wilson > Rift, AC/DC Bag > Maze, The Mango Song > Down with Disease, It's Ice, Dog Faced Boy, Divided Sky, Sample in a Jar SET 2: Peaches en Regalia > David Bowie -> Mind Left Body Jam -> David Bowie, Horn > McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters > Tweezer> Lifeboy > You Enjoy Myself[1], Chalk Dust Torture ENCORE: Bouncing Around the Room > Tweezer Reprise [1] Monty Python "Spam" vocal jam. The Mind Left Body Jam's melodic theme (like the MLB theme from Grateful Dead jams) bears a striking resemblance to Marvin Gaye's and Tammi Terrell's You're All I Need To Get By. Bowie (after the MLB Jam) included Three Blind Mice, Dave's Energy Guide, Voodoo Child, and Purple Haze teases. YEM included Frankenstein and How Many More Times teases, as well as a Spam Song vocal jam with a We're Off to See the Wizard quote ("Oz" was changed to "Spam"). The vocal jam also contained a Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque quote. Chalk Dust subsequently contained a full band tease of How Many More Times. This show was released as part of the Chicago '94 box set.
Goose sold out Red Hat and opened transfers in time for me to off the extras so that was nice. Show was fun and had a good pancakes jam. Still love This Old Sea. They played two of my least favorite covers Magic Carpet Ride and then an Escape encore which brought it down a bit for me. They are solidly in see when they’re around here territory, which is wild considering where they were for me around the pandemic shutdowns.
Drew Swinney Esq are you gonna get the Ace headphones? Seems like there is a lot of good about them but some shortcomings. Next-gen will probably have some nice improvements. I have a need for wireless headphone currently so I will probably get them. I could get the Bose which supposedly sound a tad better, but the upside of easy swapping with the Arc will probably trump that.
Nods. Also, big fan of any Bowie from that year, and of course, that's one of the best ones they ever played. This is the only show I saw of the summer tour. https://phish.net/setlists/phish-june-25-1994-nautica-stage-cleveland-oh-usa.html Despite how spun out I was that evening (and the shitty weather, and dumbfuck cleveland cops), I remember it pretty well - fond memories, in fact.
re the NO2, I remember Trey windmilling with the megaphone. First song, right out of the gate, straight blotter... which of course we were all fucking on Edit: lol, I just remembered, we saw Ween the night before in a strip mall skating rink in suburban Pittsburgh, and almost got arrested for
Tempting but don’t think so. I have fairly new AirPods and will probably ride them out and see what the 2nd gen looks like.
Vampire Weekend really leaning into the jam scene. Covered "Chalk Dust Torture" in Seattle with Mike Gordon for the last of their shows with him opening. Recently did a cover of "Peggy-O" at a SiriusXM studio session, and dropped "Cumberland Blues" and "Possum" into their set at Coachella.
Live Bait 21 Good to get 50+ minutes more 96. I've worn out all of the 97 content, started listening to a bunch of 98 recently after listening to the HF Pod ranking tours. (The fall 98 one is good because it kinda marked the departure from the era)
Haven’t listened at all with the new drummer, but need to. Just been riding the Eggy train hard lately. Will jump in and see Goose soon I’m sure
They sounded a bit tighter to me for sure. I didn’t hear them take anything to new spaces but they sounded nice and dialed in. I am not sure what Jeff adds to the band. I think they could be better off without him. Don’t hear that much of his drum work over the main kit, and he stood up to play guitar the other night and I literally couldn’t tell.
Always thought that about Jeff. Think he just keeps his spot because oh how close him and Rick are. Will probably avoid listening until I can see them live again. Make feel fresh for me if that makes sense.
Hardcore Goose fans have become pretty insufferable so I’ve been avoiding thier fan pages, etc. Par for the course when any band gets popular though. Always a group of fans that take away from the fun and subjectivity of it all.
damn where did you sit? I was there. I had a great time too and thought they really started humming at the first set closer. they are obviously talented, but id like to see them develop more of a jamming identity. a lot of those chord progressions and riffs are lifted from trey.
I was on the balcony, section C. And yeah, that’s by far my biggest gripe. It seems like all of their jam progressions are tension > release > bliss. I want to see them explore murkier waters and start probing more sonic soundscapes where a safe return is far from guaranteed.
Agree with this. It’s great music, but definitely has a jam formula to it. Guess that’s how I would describe it. I know I preach the gospel of Eggy on here often, but they really try to find some new spaces and take risk. Plus Brownstiens guitar tone and use of pedals to me is better than any one touring at the moment
Yeah I need to catch one of their shows. Heard nothing but great things and we have very similar music taste so I know I’d love it.
Yeah, not saying they can do what phish does. But to me they are the closest next best thing. Two of my hard core phish buds who have been to hundreds of shows who I took to Eggy are all in. They touring go all over now catching Eggy. this recent show a heater. Really takes off end of set 1 with Northern Lights, then the second set is just bonkers with jams. I plan on traveling some with them come October and November as dates come out.
Also Jake from Eggy makes dope graphic design clothing that’s dead and Jerry inspired https://www.instagram.com/wayless.co?igsh=czVyZTUweWYxMDdw
https://2nu.gs/3YHD9e2 a good example of what Eggy does. Not even one of their best jams, but they tease Modana Material Girl, but also has Jerry dead guitar tone vibe to it. Just fun stuff
Last week's HF Pod on Summer 03 was very useful in that I had a blind spot with 2.0. I knew there was highlights but I never knew where to start.
Remember the first time seeing them at summer camp in 2012. Been a fan since then. Just came out with a double album too Feels like they have always had a bit of trouble attracting crowds outside the northeast and Colorado. Probably just got to be too much of a grind to justify continuing to struggle financially. This isn’t the first hiatus - they did the same thing 7 years ago Umphreys has definitely slowed down from what they used to be. Saw them a few times recently and they just aren’t the same. Jake has been through a lot and they have run themselves ragged with touring. They need to take a break. I think Spafford has been struggling as well, for a number of reasons On the other hand, Lotus and the Biscuits are having a renaissance. Eggy is gaining popularity. Goose has obviously blown up. Billy strings has blown up. There has certainly been a shift, but I think the fans are still there. Hopefully this Live Nation lawsuit will help put more money back in the pockets of artists
I try not to let this affect my judgement of music, but it definitely had a negative effect on me as they grew out of clubs. Their rail riding crew is just awful, but I think that’s universal at this point. I don’t want to say they were astroturfed necessarily but they had some hefty financial backing. Their management rubbed some of the concert promoters here the wrong way booking venues a few years ago. Still need more than money to get big though. I’ve heard Tauk has had a lot of money behind them but they are about as big as they will get.
Yeah Bassist for Tauk is son of James Dolan, who owns MSG. The reason Goose fans are insufferable is due to the bands accessibility outside the scene. Got kids showing up acting like Goose is the first ever band to throw down a 15 minute jam. I like Goose. Rick’s songwriting is great. Peter is a dork but a big reason why they got big.. I also think their jams are all very formulaic and pretty much the same. They can occasionally get out there, but want them to do it more. It’s why I got a bit burnt out on them. Give me a band that throws down type 2 most of the time, not just occasionally
Yeah there is no doubt Rick is extremely talented as a song writer and guitar player. Rest of the band talent wise is ok, but he is an upper tier talent for sure Sorry to keep hyping Eggy, but 3 of the 4 are extremely talented musicians. Danny on keys is the weakest link, but his use of piano, etc has really come far this year. Bass is great, Brownstein is incredible and Alex on drums is amazing and I love that he sings. Just sonically they bring so much more as talented group than Goose does for me and I love Goose music. All subjective of course which is one of the reason it’s fun to me.
My buddy described Eggy as “It’s like Steely Dan wanted to be more like Phish”. Thought that was a fun, but Fairley accurate description.
I’ll have to give them another chance. If the type 2, talent, and variety is there, usually I warm up to it. Squeaky Feet is another new good band on the scene. Dudes play 3 song sets like it’s their job. Good introspective jamming though. Not just long for the sake of being long
Some good stuff in here Really liked these two in a row: Song that proves Jon Fishman’s drumming prowess There are different ways to look at what he does. The more composed songs, like “Drift While You’re Sleeping,” I was with him while he was sculpting that. Any song like that, with a lot of sections in it, like “It’s Ice,” really shows him off. But then there’s a jam song where he cuts loose, like “Undermine,” which has the flourish at the end that I love. Or a big “Down With Disease,” where he can get going — though he can also get into a trance state in those jams, which is also cool. I love the altered time signature stuff, like “Harry Hood,” it’s truly awe-inspiring. When he’s in ⅞ time going “Gabba-da-gabba-da-gabba-da,” he’s driving through it like his limbs are disconnected. He’s an athlete. No, it’s martial arts. Not that I know anything about martial arts, but I’ve seen The Karate Kid. You’ve gotta get an old man to tell you to paint the fence, then you can play like Jon Fishman. I will talk about Jon Fishman all day if you let me. I love Jon Fishman. He was the best man at my wedding. I remember the day we met like it was yesterday. It was love at first sight, which is dorky, but I went to his dorm room, and he was practicing his drums. Last time I saw him, at the Sphere, he was practicing his drums. I thought he was the best drummer in the world in 1984, and it’s taken time for the rest of the world to catch up. I love playing with him. I can read his mind. I want to play with him forever. I hope I die first. Best Page McConnell synths Anything off Sigma Oasis. “Evening Song.” And also “Leaves,” and the song “Sigma Oasis.” The synth playing is incredible. Now, you need to understand what else Page does on piano. No Page, no Fishman, no Phish. Here’s the thing, Mike and Fishman do not play the traditional role of bass and drums. Long periods go by where Fishman doesn’t hit the downbeat. And Mike is, well, Mike exists in his own universe that we all observe — no one knows what goes on in there. Then I’m doing my thing, surging everywhere. Page keeps it all together. Page feels like the drummer sometimes with those complex songs like “Petrichor” or “Life Beyond the Dream.” He’s the rock. Page holds it all together on the piano. I’ve seen Fishman sit in with other bands, and they can’t handle what he does. So he reverts to playing 4/4 and it’s like, “Where’s the Jon Fishman I love?” Because someone has to play that. In our band, it’s Page. So he’s great with the synthesizers and spaceship sounds, but he’s also one of the last OG rock piano players. Him and Chuck Leavell, on tour with the Stones right now, and Bill Payne from Little Feat.
