Well there were some pretty awful takes and overreactions ITT. Every character was ruined in this season apparently
and you talk about overreacting.... and yes Marty was drug into this by his partner, surprising that you did not know this because you seem to have this whole thing completely figured out and all our opinions are just stupid takes
What has Marty done to make him a psychopath? I'd give you he acts like a sociopath in some circumstances. He diffuses too many potential bad situations to be anywhere near a psychopath
well you did say Wendy was void of emotion after giving her brother up, even though they spent ~10-15 minutes of the last episode showing how much it fucked her up and the Ben corpse switcheroo theory is kinda special I'm all for listening to someone explain how either statement about Ruth's character being bad this season and/or how awful the Byrds treat her are true.
She gets the shit kicked out of her by Mob guy's kid and they do jack shit as retribution. Tell her to get over it. Everytime the mob bosses kid did something stupid, Marty apologized for Ruth and never really stood up for her. Treated her like absolute shit.
Finsihed season 3. This fucking show. Leaves a lot to be desired. Wendy singing along to REO was the highlight of the season. Shit, that was incredible.
Im sorry but she wasn’t treated like absolute shit. She threw the son of a Mob boss off a fucking boat. Knowing his connections were vital to keeping Marty and this thing going. Marty isn’t some gangster who’s going to take an eye for an eye. Never has been. He cut ties from the Mob when they were very important getting him to that spot FOR her. Just because he didn’t go calling for hits doesn’t mean she got treated like shit. And all this is happening with the FBI in his office every day. This narrative that she got treated badly is garbage and was a tough sale for me watching the show. She seems to be being conned by a over protective boyfriend and a brother and his grandma girlfriend looking to use her to end Marty. My sympathy for her is she’s to stupid to see this.
Yeaaaaa she threw him off a boat and then Ben caused $7600 damage to his car in a twisted redneck white knight move and both times she told him to fuck himself. Marty and Wendy aren’t responsible for putting their shit on the line because her and her boyfriend picked a fight with an up and coming mobster.
Thought Ben did some of the best acting that the show has seen. Definitely needs to be up for some awards. As others have said, his taxi scene was outstanding. I love how casually they drive to KC as if it is an easy 30 minute drive. It's 2.5-3.5 hours depending on your location on the Lake. First half is windy country roads and the second half is traffic-heavy I-70. It is a miserable drive. Also, it is St. Joe, not St. Joe's.
I mean the dude rigged therapy sessions. Sorry, maybe I meant sociopath. Either way. And Wendy is every bit his match.
You go away quietly when people in your group are caught being fucking CI's for the FBI. I'd imagine that's pretty bad for business, and having that information gave Marty leverage he needed to just walk away.
I thought the therapist buying a yellow McLaren and then getting killed by a hitman was bad writing , unnecessary, and detracted from the show. It was cheap and beneath the intelligence of the viewer.
I also feel like the constant shit sandwich that is Marty and Wendys' lives makes the show a drag. Shows need ups and downs, there has to be a balance. Instead this is just a free fall of depression and anxiety with the constant threat of death and total ruin. One horrible thing happening after another. It makes it hard to watch to some extent. It is still a good show. But maybe mix in a little more ups compared to downs.
I'm hoping it was the writers saying okay we're done with Sue and therapy so lets have a laugh. Definitely bad writing and where the hell did she get one to begin with, but I damn sure laughed at it, as well as when she said she wanted more because she spent 200K on the car.
Just finished binging the series over the last week. Season 3 was awesome, that last scene. Love Ruth’s character. Darlene and her “I spent the last 25 years hot boxing Pall Mall non-filters” look are slowly growing on me too. Interested to see if next season picks up right where it left off, or if the US military have already made their move.
Exactly how I feel. I don't take issue with the character development. The Ben writing and acting was phenomenal. The plot now is always some razor thin margin away from them all getting killed, with some suspension of disbelief needed to continue watching. Just gotta take it for what it is, but it's not amazing you guys are nuts
Is that any different than Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, or Banshee? I don’t disagree, but those shows were also one train wreck after another. I always referred to them, especially SOA, as Threes company but with murder. Always a misunderstanding leads to someone dying.
The writing in breaking bad is substantially better than Ozark. BB is one of the best shows ever. Ozark is not on that level. BB is able to break the monotony of constant near death and dread with funny and interesting scenarios. Not familiar with Banshee. I did not enjoy Sons of Anarchy.
I wasn't saying one wasn't better than the other, but all have that ominous can't escape feeling. Watch Banshee. Amazing show.
My point is that the superior writing and variance/levity gives the viewer a vacation from the constant shit sandwich of the actual plot.
I understood the point. I am not a moron and I don't disagree. That said I brought up Breaking Bad, because it also fell into the trap many times. Overall it was better, but it wasn't without fault.
Didn't mean to imply you are a moron. And I will agree that BB did fall into the trap. There were times that you felt you were slogging through it (although I still think it did a better job of distracting you from the misery than Ozark).
I actually enjoyed this season of Ozark more than season 2 despite the misery. I think if there was no Marty I would struggle with the show a lot. His calm cool demeanor and soft spoken attitude make the show work for me.
Marty is definitely the best character in the show and is what makes it work. His wife may or may not be as bad as the protagonist's wife in BB (can't remember any of their names)
Almost done with all 3 seasons and have watched them in a binge. Would not say Bruce drug Marty in to it. Marty impressed Del in their intro, Del didn't want anything to do with Bruce really. There's a scene with him and Wendy talking the pros and cons when the kids are young and they both make the decision to go for it. But Bruce put them in the situation of being on the run when he and the truckers started skimming ...
Season 3 complete, would say I am in the camp of not enjoying it that much. I kinda wish I had gotten on this show earlier. I think cramming all 3 seasons in to a couple weeks is a bit intense and doesn't allow much time for reflection on successes and failures. I think some others mentioned that eventually they would have liked the Byrdes to have an easier go of things. I guess when your biz is money laundering that never happens, but for three seasons our heroes are just getting beaten down at every turn and I think that eventually wore on me (especially when watching all 3 consecutively). So, that's kind of why I didn't care for the Ben character this year. Well acted, yes, insightful towards issues of mental health, yes, but I don't think we needed another antagonist to further complicate the Byrde's issues. In that regard, I think the whole KC mob involvement for the last two seasons was really unnecessary. There's enough to work with in terms of villains with the cartel, the Snells/locals, and the politicians. The fact they didn't carry forward much on the internal state politics side for season 3 was a miss for the writers IMO. That angle allowed Wendy to shine in season 2, and I'm not sure what her role was towards the family biz in season 3. Also, Frank Jr was the worst acting in the entire show. Just a dimwitted neanderthal character that had no depth and only served to be a douche. Same for Frank Sr really. He shows up once an ep at most, stares down Marty or Wendy to an intense musical back drop, then we never hear from him again. And wtf is up with Frank Jr's car? Annoyed me to see a "mob figure" driving a 1980s Trans Am in a show set in 2020 like it's a sweet ride or something. Really I just found that whole storyline to be utterly useless other than a couple action scenes where they shoot off a truck driver's hand and blow up Marty's office. And like someone else mentioned ... what the hell ended up with that? Just water under the bridge? I think the worst part of the season was the downturn of Ruth's character. She was so strong and so well acted in the first two seasons. I think the love story angle hurt her character a bit. If this whole story occurs over roughly a 1-2 year time frame (I could be wrong on that) she just struck me as someone who wouldn't have time for love and is always in survival mode #1. She would be more focused on getting Wyatt back in her life and continuing to fend off their enemies. It felt a bit forced that some sketchy older dude shows up and within a few eps there's this intense love story going on Anyhoo, this is not to say i didn't enjoy the series as a whole and won't be looking forward to season 4. Just feel things got a bit away from the writers this season and there was too much going on. And would recommend to any new viewers to space the seasons out more than I did ...
They turned Ruth from a strong, take no shit female to a lovesick fucking puppy who allowed her heart and feelings to get into the way of common sense like what the fuck man
and what was the reason for the change? her scumbag dad who was gone for most of her life and who she wasn’t close to gets killed for being an idiot or she finally gets some good bipolar dick in her life
Spoiler Marty has some experience with cremation at this point so i think he could tell the difference between Ben and the psychiatrist's body types. Also Ruth was in the room too i thought. She woulda noticed the difference.
