yes this is a major concern because I assume I’ll be falling a lot the first day (and each day after that)
If you have an REI account just order everything you kind of like, try them on, and just return them for free at the store. I’ve done that for about all my gear. I would insist on obviously water proof, powder skirt, and side vents. As long as it has those parts, it’s really about fit and whatever brand you like.
Conditions you are most likely to see matter as well. As a PNW rider, GoreTex is absolutely necessary IMO. Burton AK all the way.
does anyone have any experience driving from reno to a tahoe resort on the morning of a weekend? land Friday night and wondering if I can just stay in reno and drive to Northstar on Saturday AM instead of driving into South Lake Tahoe on Friday evening. it is a shorter drive from Reno, but curious about Reno to Tahoe traffic on Saturday AM
we will be staying in South Lake Saturday and Sunday night to ski Heavenly / Kirkwood, so we want to drive. I've taken that shuttle once. it is convenient
I saw this tweet this AM: My friend is heading there for this weekend, but I won't be there until March 15
Hitting up Beaver this weekend for some bluebird skiing. Colorado looks to be getting a solid snow storm next friday, which would be just grand. fingers crossed.
Sunday looks like they’ll start digging things out, but Donner Pass is the big question mark. It does look like the storm is lingering around more on Monday than forecast a couple days ago. Oh well, good problems to have for California’s water table.
My parents have rented a house in Georgetown for the month of March. Flying out next thursday to spend an extended weekend out there. Gonna ski a couple days at Loveland. my older brother lives in Denver and goes skiing about every chance he can get. Look forward to seeing him at the beginning and end of the day
Just got back this past Tuesday from skiing Northstar and Heavenly. Going back up March 13-18. It was great last weekend; should be even better with this big dump.
I've been wanting to make this jump for years and I've finally pulled the trigger Spoiler headed back to aspen soon and will figure out boots at cripple creek
Woke up at 5 am this morning to ski. Not good. But absolutely no one on the roads with daylights saving time. Gonna be a fun day with vail to ourselves.
Just booked a weekend trip with my kids (11/14) first weekend of April. Not sure where we are going to ski but staying in Breck. Going to ski there at least one day because I never have. We have epic so might to Breck/ Beaver.
Breck is too big to do just 1 day, and you are staying there, so it would make sense to just do breck
Was at Loveland the last 2 days. Couldn’t have asked for better weather for the only 2 days i will ski this year.
Currently at winter park. Dropped a couple inches on the way in last night then an anticipated 2ft expected to drop tonight and tomorrow.
glad you are already up there because Denver is supposed to get somewhere between 10 and 24 inches starting tonight thru Friday AM. so you should get the spoils of the storm without traveling. Enjoy WP! I am flying out to Tahoe Friday evening, hope my flight isn't pushed.
Absolutely incredible pow day. Best I’ve ever had. Got stuck a few times from the snow being so deep.
Wear your Josh Allen jersey Spoiler it’s been nice but windy AF at heavenly. Stateline gondola closed more days than not. We almost went to palisades, kinda regret not making the trip. The base has held up for the most part though.
Was just coming in here to ask for North Star recs for tomorrow. Any tips on parking or best runs. ya seems like it’ll be 10 degrees warmer at northstar and Kirkwood than heavenly the whole weekend. Odd
Check the website for prepay parking passes which are usually in better locations. Could be sold out on a Saturday, but for the past two days we have bought passes day-of before leaving the house (we bought our pass for today earlier in the week). When you get there, take the Village Express lift up to mid-mountain instead of waiting in line for the Hot Springs Gondola; it’s right behind the gondola building. At mid-mountain, we usually go up Tahoe Zephyr Express lift and ride down the Drifter run to the Backside where the crowds are lighter and there are a bunch of good runs. That said, if you’ve never been before it’s worth taking Arrow Express lift from mid-mountain to Comstock lift for the views. Comstock always has the longest lines bc it accesses the most runs. From the top of Comstock, the runs along the west ridge are longer and more fun; the east ridge get you a view of the lake but the east ridge trail itself is relatively flat and takes some effort after you pass The Powder Bowl and Flume runs (which are two very good runs that take you down through the trees). I wouldn’t ride anything off of Vista Express from mid-mountain; it’s mostly freestyle courses and a handful of boring blues. If you get over to the Martis Camp area - which takes some doing through a confusing trail called Lookout Bypass or riding a pommel lift - the runs back there are pretty steep, long and fast (there just aren’t many of them). Idk if you ski or board but if you ski try to stay off of the Main Street runs (below Comstock) until the end of the day if you need to get off the mountain that way. Those runs are full of kids and boarders going very slow all day long. If you need to go down to mid-mountain ride the west ridge runs like Pioneer and The Gully instead. Enjoy!
I board. I’ve been before but always like the insight. We are currently driving up. Thanks for the insight. I do love powder bowl and the backside/promised land area. good tip re: village express. Read that somewhere else. Will make sure to take it.
Only got a few pics at winter park. After the storm Wednesday and Thursday the skies cleared up yesterday for a beautiful day. I really enjoyed all the tree runs they had. So many opportunities for fresh lines in several feet of powder.
Anison Perfect advice re village express. Got us to arrow lift with no line while the gondola line was hundreds deep
