We’re so close. Wife and I are starting the season in Alaska, then spending a healthy amount of time in Aspen. I’m sure we will sprinkle in a couple more trips
Will be with in laws in Canmore, Alberta for Xmas. Going to sell some organs soon to afford Lake Louise/Sunshine during the holidays. Also sprinkles of snow hitting parts of the PNW and Montana
Trips to Tahoe and Whistler. Weekend warrior at Meadows. last season was such a bust. Making a commitment to get some days in this year.
we tend to like to go in February just in case, but I got a feeling in my bones we will get some gnarly early snow.
Copper in March is my only trip. But I haven't been skiing since 2020 so I'm excited. Taking my kids for the first time too.
going for the first time this season on 12/31, then going on 1/4. just booked trips to Crested for January 30 and Tahoe on March 19.
Stay careful out there if any of ya do side/back county. “We’re particularly worried because we haven’t seen much new snow in a few weeks, and our snowpack is now exceptionally weak. People will be excited about the new snow, have time off to enjoy the mountains, and at the same time, the avalanche danger will be the highest we’ve seen in a month,” said CAIC Director Ethan Greene in the press release.
It’s been deep all week here. Awesome off trail runs. We’re probably going to get home a day or so late due to flight cancellations
The videos from the Vail Resorts properties look fun from the strike. As if Christmas and New years skiing wasn’t enough of a disaster
Went to beaver creek today. Delightful. Traffic was predicted to be awful but it hasn’t been bad at all
Vail is rightfully getting crushed in the press. Locally here in park city I don’t think I’ve ever seen the community as a whole agree with one side of a labor dispute like this. People already hate vail, the city government hates vail, and now the outside world is finally seeing how shitty vail is. Fyi, the “power outage” they had I believe was the 30th at the canyons wasn’t real. They realized they had no scab patrol to do the avalanche mitigation after the big snow we got that night so after about an hour of the lines building they just focused all their energy on the PC side and said screw the canyons. They haven’t run Tombstone since the 31st, and iron mountain has gotten so stacked the last few days they stopped letting people ride timberline both directions, stranding those who skied over from the PC side thinking the lines might be better. They are making progress in their discussions. I’d put decent money it’ll be resolved this week.
when I was in college the 5 mountain pass for 10 days at Vail/BC, and unlimited at Breck, Key, and AB was $349 lol
let me if you need any insight on some of my favorite runs. Not too hard of a mountain to get around, so I am sure you are trying different spots here and there.
my man. We call it Crusta because of how bad it can be when there hasn't been snow. But it will be perfect for Saturday with the snow coming in.
definitely, thanks! I think I did most runs off Centennial (and some of Rose Bowl) and was going to try to do Larkspur tomorrow.
lapping red buffalo and rose bowl is always a blast. I also recommend starting at arrowhead, lapping cresta and those runs over there if it has snowed. You can move over to Bachelor Gulch (gunderson and grubsteak) as there are some fun runs over there as well if the conditions are good. I have found myself really enjoying the strawberry lift and president ford's run there. Bob's in Avon is a pretty good sports bar if you need a spot to watch the game tonight and drink coors + slam wings.
I like BC because it is straightforward. there is no backside or bowls. easy to get around. You know where the good runs are. minimal crowds. easy to "hot lap" your favorite runs. However, I am excited to go to vail this saturday, which is much more like a choose your own adventure playground. lots of secret stashes to be found.
At Mt Hood Meadows for the 4th time this season. This is my second season but really the first word I've actually put in the effort to try to snowboard and maybe it's the warm slightly hard but not too hard conditions today, but it's fucking finally starting to click. Still having a tougher time on blues but I'm finally able to go from heels to toes while having a little speed and not falling half the time I have a value pass which means I can ski on the weekdays but not the weekends until after 2:00 p.m. and I can ski nights on the runs that are open. Thankfully my work schedule is flexible enough that I'm getting up here once a week for several hours.
just an FYI, as of last week, it was not open. it opened late last year as well. it looks a bit barren last weekend. last year, it didn't open until later in January despite having plenty of snow on it. Not sure why that is. But yeah, I will likely hold off on going back to BC until it opens because it really makes that side of the mountain much more fun. Of course, unless it is a powder day and you have to ride Cresta and Pow Wow. edit: this tells me it is open https://www.beavercreek.com/the-mountain/mountain-conditions/terrain-and-lift-status.aspx
My wife tore her Achilles and it’s put a damper on my ski season. That being said I head to JH and Targhee in 2 weeks with my old boss
Have skiied Targhee 2-3 times. The new lift they opened maybe three years ago puts it on the border of top class ski resort. If it was 30 min closer to Jackson over the pass it would already be huge. Such a great under the radar hill. With the amount of “normal” rich people buying 2-3 million dollar houses on that side of the pass, it will be full blown Western ski resort in 10-15 years. I believe they are starting construction on some ski in/out condos there soon.
Skiing out of the US for the first time ever in a week. Had a question for the pros in here-- is it as bad as the internet says to rent a helmet? We have helmets but are trying to pack light... alternatively should I wear my ski helmet for the whole flight so everyone knows I am a v cool guy
Take your helmet. Good helmet vs not good helmet can be the difference between scary story and life altering accident. If you don’t want to take it, buy a good one when you get there.
