Either the nostalgia for this is so overwhelming for every 30-45 year old movie reviewer that they have lost their minds, or this is going to be fucking epic.
I was pretty skeptical although I was always going to watch it but I've seen enough that I'm totally bought in.
I’m gonna have to stay out of this thread this week. Got tickets for Friday and haven’t been this excited for a movie in a long time.
Got 4DX tickets, not sure if that was the right move or not. Worried the seats and extra stuff will take away from the movie.
Got tickets with my dad on Friday morning at a regular theater. Going to go with my fiancee to a 4D theater later
How about a free ticket after grabbing a meal at your favorite local bar and grill? https://www.applebees.com/en/specials/free-movie-tickets
Mostly liked it but I think I'm a bit close to how the sausage is made so I'm just sitting there going "well that's not a thing". But over all really enjoyed it
I'm the perfect age range to be a mark for this already, fwiw. But... The fan service never feels out of place or forced and the story is great. The visuals/sound are as expected, but it's an actual good movie on top of all of that. They made the right call to keep holding it until they could have it in theaters. It's an experience
Hell I almost started after the first scene of credits and Maverick riding his old motorcycle 3 min in.
I cried. Last line is perfect. I don't remember being as immersed in a movie as I was the last 30 minutes of this one. Like I really really cared what happened and I wasn't sure what was going to happen.
If you don't have tickets reserved, find the biggest and best theater you can. Get one with the best sound and sit in the best seat you can. Best audible experience I've had in a movie in I don't know how long.
We did the 4DX and no regrets. During the previews, they kind of showed off what the seats can do and over did it, felt like a Disney ride. Had be concerned that it was going to be too much. But once the movie started, it was great. I swear I smelled sweat one time and jet fuel a few times. Wouldn't work for all movies but it did foe this one.
Every possible mistake a movie like this (sequel to a decades-old movie) could have made was avoided. As a microcosm of that: Early in the movie, there's a scene when Maverick first sits down at the local bar, and we focus on Cruise as he's sort of sitting back, watching the new Top Gun fighter pilots enter the room, banter, and basically remake a scene from the first movie. It's like Maverick is watching "the cheesy, unnecessary Top Gun remake movie" playing out before his eyes, and he's smirking at how silly it is. The scene lasts only for a minute or two, before the movie goes back to being HIS movie, and it's all the better for it. He's the star. He carries the film. He makes it great.
My expectations were high, and it exceeded them. That was the most fun I've had at the movies in a long, long time. Hit every note I wanted to hit, and did it without forcing anything. Really just a superior film to its predecessor in virtually every way. Funny, heartfelt, well acted, and had a much more coherent story than it even needed to. The last act, in particular, is absolutely gripping. 10/10
The last act was amazing. Right up there with the past three Mission:Impossible movies' third acts, which are some of the most "edge of your seat" sequences ever put to film.
