Goode will get another year and was going to be the only player asked back. Needed a reset, it is what it is.
Losing a coach to the big east is pretty embarrassing for a B1G program right? (even if Nova is a great program)
Why? He goes to a prestigous job, with an easier path to a high seed, and no competition from football for resources. The resource gulf for football between SEC/B1G and others is undeniable. Not sure that's necessarily the case for basketball.
I'm sure UMD fans see it as an embarrassment but I think I'd rather have the Nova job. Big East is a power hoops conference too. DeChellis leaving PSU to take the Navy job after making the tourney is still very funny.
I admit this post NIL college world has flipped everything I thought I knew about college athletics. formerly average schools are now top dawgs based on their NIL ceiling But id have thought, for a college coach today, SEC & B1G jobs > everything else (except for football / bball blueblood programs). Maybe not in hoops Still surprised to see Willaird book it after the best maryland hoops season in a decade Also, inter-department competition for NIL is a good point. Maybe Williard's tired of fighting with maryland football over it
I personally think Villanova as a job and program is kind of overrated. Jay Wright absolutely killed it there and was dominant, but outside of his tenure, it’s been nothing special. So I don’t really think the job and school provide inherent advantages or some elite program, I just think Jay Wright was a great coach and did a fantastic job. Maybe Willard combined with their recent reputation can take advantage of that, though.
Nbd, I'm sure there are some more former Drake coaches floating around somewhere for Maryland to hire.
He won a single (one) NCAA tournament game in 9 seasons. They were solid for sure and I’d take 1 NCAA win as a Nebraska fan, but that tenure doesn’t scream basketball power. Most B1G schools are probably better than that.
Maybe go look at the Villanova basketball Wikipedia page because I think calling the program outside of the Wright era "nothing special" is unfounded. But he was also there for two decades. Arizona basketball is also "nothing special" if you just ignore Lute Olsen's tenure I guess.
I know their history, I was obsessed with Villanova basketball in high school/college and they were my second team for a while after Nebraska. The teams with Randy Foye, Allan Ray, Mike Nardi, Kyle Lowry, Will Sheridan, Dante Cunningham were my favorite college basketball team ever. It still makes me angry that they got absolutely boned on a phantom travel call vs UNC in 2005.
Basketball 'only' schools that are in the Big East, like Nova, can flex that 20.5 mil NCAA Rev share cap because they don't have football gobbling up most of it by comparison.
Honest question, do those schools have an extra 20.5 million to dish out annually? Quick googling tells me their new TV deal pays out about $7.2 million per school annually.
No, but they have 90% of that 7.2 to dish out to basketball which is probably more than most schools will allocate to their basketball progrum out of that pool
I'm completely talking out of my ass here but I'd imagine you also have decent NIL funds available since you don't have big time football sucking it up even if you're dealing with a smaller pool of big fish donors. Lots of wealthy alums out there from most of these institutions.
Dude just wants to stay 4-6 years at a program and move on before they realize he’s not very good I’d take him over Willard but Buzz is an asshole
Oh, he mad. Quite the reaction for the guy who runs the site to a pretty subdued post from a paying subscriber.
