Feel horrible for you guys THEBLUERAIDER and Gomez35 , there's nothing worse. We all know its coming and we would all sign up for it in a heartbeat, regardless. We just have to take solace in knowing we give our pups the best lives they could have hoped for.
This is definitely one of the biggest reasons, especially here in Florida. Pixel has them fixed at 8 weeks, and while it may not be the most ideal situation, it is one of the only ways we can open up more foster spots to continue saving the most lives. If we waited longer, our pups would never get adopted because adopters would just go to the shelter where they do the same thing, fix 'em and send them out.
Lily is my first full time dog, and I am definitely soft on her because she is a great girl but also because I know that I want to make every single minute in this life as fun as possible for her. losing a dog gives you some perspective
It really does. I haven't lost a dog since my folks had to put down my childhood pup when I was a freshman in college but I am so immersed in rescue that I feel like I have lost multiple pups over the years from the ones who have passed after they were adopted or ones we can't save. Almost every single day I'll find myself correcting one of mine or being a little too harsh and I think, "someday you will want to give damn near anything for her to be around doing this thing that annoys you so much".
i was trying to correct her today while walking on a leash and I was getting annoyed, I thought exactly the same thing
Thanks man. That dude definitely had a great life once we rescued him. Never wanted for nothing. No matter how bad it sucks, the joy and happiness they give makes it easier for sure.
The little thing on her shoulder is because she runs like a maniac with her friends when I let her loose
Probably stabbed herself with some wood, she is insanely fast running in the wood. I hold my breath every time she goes full throttle
dog broke a tooth a few weeks ago. took her to the vet so she could get put under anesthesia for a dentistry visit. was told she has EIGHT extra teeth. and because of that, she has a few infections. Some teeth have like one root, others have three. always something with this cute ass doggo
This is Logan, we pulled him from the shelter yesterday after our favorite trainer asked if we could help. She's a GSD aficionado and one of her girls is going to foster him, could not be a better place for him. We have so few fosters in general and even fewer for big dogs, so their willingness to foster was the only way it was going to happen. He was found loose at a firefighter training compound and brought to the shelter, he has a chip but the search was a dead end as it was never registered with any database. He had been there for three weeks and was not thriving. He's only two years old and of course he is HW+, but honestly that was not my main concern. As soon as I read the shelter notes, I was terrified he was going to nip the wrong handler and end up with a "bite history" which is essentially a death sentence for a GSD (or any big dog) in the shelter. This was from the shelter's writeup: "This is a brilliant, young dog and he is not thriving as one of nearly 200 dogs in the shelter. Getting by with a once, maybe twice, daily walk and a few minutes of interaction here and there with people is not enough for him. But it’s all we can offer him here. Logan is showing frustration here at the shelter. This is what frustration looks like for him – he barks incessantly for any stimulation, any movement, anyone walking by, he’s often seen pacing in his kennel, he jumps repeatedly and, while he enjoys his excursions out to the yard, he snaps at his handler when being returned. Outside and with a handler, Logan presents his true self, he’s friendly and nudges your hand for affection. With each day that passes his frustration increases." Normally these pulls don't affect me because I'm too worried about what will happen if the foster flakes or the dog does something that makes them say they can't help. But this one got me for whatever reason, I was almost in tears when I was texting with the trainer and foster while they were at the shelter evaluating him. Can't wait to meet him, he's got a long road to recover from the HW but he's got a great chance, and as the trainer told me, it will be a good chance for his foster to practice training and stimulation techniques without physical activity.
Cross posting - looking in the Birmingham, AL area if anyone knows a no kill shelter currently taking dogs.
jeez they're so skinny... I'm not sure there is such thing as a no-kill shelter in Alabama, they may say they are but that usually they only take in what they think they know they can adopt out so lots get turned away. That sucks about 2x2 but I know the feeling, we can't take them without a guaranteed foster. A quick Googling shows a couple other options: Dixie Girl Dog Rescue P.O. Hadn't seen Underdog. That would have been helpful this morning, but I think things are going to work out (hopefully). Last night, wife found a social media post by a vet clinic we formerly used saying the clinic had found a dog and if not claimed in a week it was being adopted out. First thing this morning, I took the pups to the clinic hoping the clinic would do the same thing here. The vet clinic was not exactly thrilled and not exactly sure what to do at first. Checked for a chip (none) and then asked if I wanted to board and pay for vaccinations. I said I would, but at the same time they said they had animal control on the phone and could arrange a pickup from the clinic, so I agreed to that and left, thinking animal control would take them to the humane society (a no kill shelter). Afterward, we realized we should have still offered to pay for shots and spaying if doing so would increase adoption odds. Eventually we were in contact with animal control, who told us that animal control would take care of spaying, shots, food, shelter, etc. and that they thought the odds of adoption were pretty high since they were less than 6 month old puppies. The puppies were extremely sweet and nice, albeit a bit apprehensive of strangers and malnourished, so I figured the likelihood of adoption was really high. All things considered, I think it was a good outcome since we couldn't foster/keep them?
In addition to being extremely malnourished, we gave the dogs what seemed to be the first baths of their lives last night. They were probably about 5 months old. One had a collar on, so it was clearly someone's pet at some point. I do not understand how people can do that to innocent puppies.
Was this MB Animal Control? Preston Sloan was going to be my next suggestion for a call if my first one didn’t work out.
My guess is that the dog was actually dumped at the vets office versus someone bringing in a dumped pet. (thats how I got my dog) You can also leave yours or your wifes number with the shelter so they could contact you guys in case anything happens if you want
Yeah you did the right thing man, good on you. My guess is the mom probably wasn't spayed, owner let her wander, came home pregnant and had the pups, owner just neglected them and eventually turned them out or they escaped. Either way, it takes a lot of neglect for them to end up that skinny. Thaks for doing the right thing, well done
We put the pups in the backyard and wouldn’t let Piper go back there so she wouldn’t potentially get sick. Piper was not happy last night
Spoilered the photo, but I think my dog got bit by something? He came inside like nothing was wrong and I noticed it.. washed it and will be spraying it with vetricin tonight and calling the vet tomorrow. He doesn't act like he's in pain, he's not licking it. It's not really bleeding. Of course he already had a vet appt Thursday afternoon, so he needed another problem so I can spend some more money. Spoiler: Bite
So, my way of coping with the loss of one awesome dog was to immediately start looking for puppies to adopt. Not sure it's totally healthy, but I fucking love dogs and can't really picture my life without them. So, here's Pancho...
What's healthy is what works for you man, a lot of people are like you, that need to pour their love right back into another dog. Then some are like my buddy, who lost his after college and still doesn't have another one fifteen years later, or my Dad who had to put down my childhood pup in 1997 and never got another one. We're trying to get him to adopt one but he can't handle the idea of one dying on him, it's too much for him after my mom passed. Everyone grieves differently.
Going to call today. He wasn't acting any different from normal so I didn't think it was an emergency vet issue.
She thought it was an abscess. Asked about bot flies and she said she had only seen that once in our area, and it was a barn cat somewhere. Got antibiotics. He had two skin tags I wanted removed, but that has to wait now. Brought my black lab too thinking she has arthritis and I'd get some anti inflammatory or something. Nope - she may have torn a ligament in her knee. That'll be fun for a 9 ywwr old dog
Abscess is much better than bot flies so that is good news. Hope it ends up not being a torn ligament but they are so common in those long-legged breeds. Every time my big girl Dutch Shepherd takes a wrong step and cries or limps for a few minutes I'm scared its a ligament
Vet said it's one of the lateral ligaments. She didn't feel any swelling but it was clear it was damaged. That injury was about 3-4 weeks ago, so now the dog is on meds and rest for another month to hope it can heal
Do any of you guys carry pet insurance or can make a recommendation? I’ve never had it before for any dogs but of 9 year old girl just had emergency surgery for bloat ($$) and I am now considering it for the younger dogs. Costco carries Figo and friend recommended Pets Best (although they have never made a claim with their new puppy).
