That Worm album is just so good. I’m sure I’ve just overlooked something in the last 20 years but it’s the first album of its kind to make me feel like the first SKEPTICISM and diSEMBOWELMENT album(s) did

i want to love funeral mist, but mortuus / arioch is too scummy for me. it's a struggle to separate art / artist.

I must be unfamiliar with this (other than reading before that he hates for fans to approach him) what am I missing?

    For me, no order:

Between the Buried and Me - Colors II (prog metal)
Stormkeep - Tales of Othertime (melodic black metal)
Suffering Hour - The Cyclic Reckoning (blackened death)
Obscura - A Valediction (tech death)
Archspire - Bleed the Future (tech death)

Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse may work it’s way into the list in time as I relisten. Avant-garde death metal.

"In April 2018, Mortuus and former Marduk drummer Fredrik Widigs were accused of purchasing items from the Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR), a Swedish neo-Nazi organization, after sale records for various purchases were uncovered, including Mortuus and Widigs' real names, personal email addresses, and shipment records confirmed the material was shipped to their home addresses. The items included stickers and flyers promoting the NMR and the books "Our Way - The Nordic Party Movement Party Program" and "National Socialism - The Biological Worldview"."

Well that’s a shame — I took a few year hiatus from looking for and listening to new metal unless it fell into my lap until the last couple of years and so I didn’t really read up on bands like I used to; Now it turns out some of my favorite acts are terribly problematic — Funeral Mist and Inquisition namely.

yeah, unfortunately black metal in particular is a minefield with this kind of shit.

i do my best to do my research / financially support non-sketch bands only.

in any event, I don’t want to derail the thread discussion of everyone’s AOTY

yeah as a 15/16 year old I didn’t give a shit what Graveland, Burzum, Absurd, etc stood for but really you have to do your due diligence

For me, if a band is explicitly NSBM it’s pretty easy to avoid them. The tough part is if they’re just loosely affiliated with a sketchy label or member and there’s nothing concrete.

Really loving this new album by the Finnish HOLLOW WOODS — not very Finnish, much more Norse in style

i just want to say, the part that begins at roughly the 6:05 mark on the first track (The Seer) of that Stormkeep record is utterly outstanding.

can’t get enough of Kekht Arakh’s Pale Swordsman.

raw black metal in the spirit of the first 3 Darkthrone records, but with beautiful and somber piano melodies over the top.

it doesn’t sound like it should work, but it really does. the guy is a great songwriter.

i would check it out even if you don’t like early Darkthrone.

Have you ever heard the other band he played in? I think he only did session drums and accordion but it’s called Cuckoo’s Nest. It’s proggy post-black metal with avant garde and math rock tendencies? Its definitely a lot. It doesn’t sound like they know what the hell they want to do.

Also really enjoying this “anonymous” album that’s going to be released soon; just pure punkified black metal. Reminds me of Nuit Noire

    Have you checked out Skeleton’s 2020 self-titled?

it’s like Midnight if they had more NWOBHM and Bay Area thrash riffs, I guess

on the topic of punky crusty bm

Finally listened to this, really enjoyed it, feels like it will reward repeat listening.

Also checked out Hulder's newest record, thought it was pretty good as well.

Finally, really dug the album Mire by Conjurer, came out in 2018. Randomly recommended to me on Spotify, which is usually average at best with recommendations. Kind of a mix of influences, there’s sludge, doom, and blackened death all in there

Glad you liked that Kanonfieber. I was pretty into it when I first discovered it, but got distracted by other records later this year. Will listen again.

I find that the production sounds squeaky clean, which I think is weird for a record with this vibe and subject matter. It doesn’t sound bad, but I was expecting some fuzzier HM-2 kinda sound (maybe it’s the black and orange cover lol).

New Wilderun is out today. Haven’t listened yet but a big fan of their last two albums. Progressive death metal with some symphonic and folk influences.

I tried but it never clicked with me. I don't know if it was because the songs take forever to develop, or what.

Love that last one's album art.

It took me a few listens to get into Veil. Their songs do bleed over into each other so some start right off the bat and others build. I loved their second album on first listen.

I just listened to the latest one and I’d currently have it behind both the last two. But maybe like Veil it’ll continue to grow on me over time.

i only truly love Nothing, Catch 33, and obZen

the newer stuff was just too dense for me, and the old stuff isn't special. i dunno, maybe i caught those 3 albums at the right point in time of my life.

i will definitely give a fair listen to anything they put out. they're incredible musicians.

I thought the violent sleep of reason was flat out boring the first few months I listened to it, but I ultimately grew to love it, especially after seeing some of those tunes live.

that’s a good point, I saw them live on the obZen tour so that cemented a lot of songs for me.

Although, I do think it’s considered their best work by most.
