It’s the Rogan/Barstool-sphere that likely pushed him into your feed. I think he’s a pretty pedestrian comedian from what I’ve seen of his standup. But folks down here seem to put him on a pedestal because he’s from Covington Louisiana. I’m pretty sure he’s about to go mainstream with some sitcom project. Like most of the comics in Rogans circle. Dude clearly has problems. He has a pretty well documented porn addiction and I have a feeling that will be his downfall as some point.
I haven't listened to Segura much over the last few years (Christina P always annoyed me on their podcast). But I saw a clip of him belittling his audience for being poor. I never expected him to go full boots strap culture. (The entire clip is interesting. But this specific exchange takes place at the 9:20 mark)
Many Rogan-sphere comedies try to conceal the fact that they come from money. During a recent interview with Louie CK, Bert Kreischer is a perfect example of this. I don't know Theo personally, but it's not uncommon to find a white dude in south Louisiana who has spent most of his adolescent life around black folks. Hell, I know white guys named Tyrone and Lavon (this only happens in Louisiana lol). Could it entirely be a schtick? possibly. I'd be interested in seeing some of his clips from Road Rules to see if that accent is super heavy or not. I do agree with you that this is the evolution of white trash/bro humor. The Barstool crowd seems to love this dude.
Much like Chappelle, I thought he was great before he got cancel culture/trans brain rot. Plus, Tom's wife seems like a horrible influence.
He seems like the type that got the bag/$$$, and his true self came out. Christine P never interested me because she always complained about millennials and canceled culture.
I’m not convinced it was originally a bit, but they definitely tried to end it that way. The one thing Segura secretly cares about is his wife/family and getting publicly ‘cucked’ by Theo (a lesser comic) definitely left a mark. Just my opinion imo.
I get some guy named Matt Rife on my feeds. Never searched him or anything. Much better than Theo Von though.
I would have whiffed on Theo's age by a solid 5-7 years. I was thinking he was like 35 at the oldest.
Theo has been hitting every major somewhat comedic podcast for a minute and is happy to fill in for apparently anyone Ethan grew up next to him and I am absolutely stunned there wasn't an anecdote of some kind but neither of us knows him or as far as I can remember have even heard of someone knowing him and that's considering we hang out with a lot of comedians He's still going to somehow be on the recommended though
I quickly realized that. For a second I thought you were talking about podcaster Ethan Klein. The thought of him being from the Northshore/Slidell area made me cackle out loud.
Is that the tall, old, bald comedian with a podcast? Yea I saw him and another guy talking about how Andrew Tate is actually a pretty cool and intelligent dude and that was an immediate no from me. I wasn’t paying super close attention so maybe I’m misremembering it, but I’m pretty sure they were talking about Tate.
I tend to get a lot of Theo content in my feeds too. Considering how batshit crazy every story he tells is, I assume it’s all a bit. Last thing I saw was he said he had a “grown man dick” from the age of 4, and that a coach took a picture of it “but not in a pedophile way.”
I like to rib wes tegg about being a Stoolie from time to time but I just googled Von and his most recent podcast guest was David Portnoy
I guess my question better stated is why is this just now happening? Rinella is the only Rogan-adjacent guy whose content I consume, and the barstool-related accounts have decreased dramatically. I don’t really follow any comedian accounts. So, it doesn’t feel organic. The best explanation I’ve heard is that he had a pilot coming out and this is an intentional push.
Idk it it makes it better or worse but he doesn't seem too smart about politics and kind of just falls backwards into takes. He's a reactionary on a lot of things for sure and his wife sucks
At one point, he was message board level FSU/CFB fan. Like when he was a known but not mega successful comedian he was doing podcasts with our beat writers. A lot of his early stand up had stuff about playing HS football in Florida. So yeah you’re probably right.
Unless I've missed something on Segura, he doesn't really offer up political takes. He'll do the dumb "comedians are under attack" song and dance if a guest brings it up, but I haven't heard much otherwise. Obviously he hangs out with some real dumb fucks, so he probably has some bad opinions.
Strange thing is Segura is bilingual and his mom is Peruvian and doesn't speak English iirc. You'd think he's be more choosey about who he stood beside but again, he's kind of an idiot.
Yeah, that's what hanging out with Rogan will do to you. I think Tom is a good dude with shitty friends(outside of Bert, who is dumb as a rock but harmless imo).
Tom is money poisoned. His stop being poor bit is schtick but he does it so often I imagine it's him just leaning into something he believes. His wife is genuinely one of the worst people in the comedy podcast realm. Also painfully unfunny.
I barely know who any of these people are everyone on tmb seems to know every detail of their lives/careers /old guy
The “he’s a good dude, but hangs around with complete assholes” argument never makes sense to me. Why does he choose to hang out and parrot these people’s arguments if he’s such a good dude?
I know people I consider good humans who keep questionable friends. I have friends who say dumb shit I disagree with. Maybe Tom is a piece of shit himself. I don't really see it that way though.
Yeah I don't think Segura is necessarily a bad guy but he's way too asleep at the wheel to be talking about politics
I agree. I think he generally avoids those topics for the most part. That being said, I haven't listened to anything in the YMH universe in months, so he could be hosting a political podcast at this point for all I know.
Theo has always sucked, I noticed Tom changing once the lead up to him moving to Austin started and he's become almost unlikeable. Bert is just dumb as fuck and always has been and is harmless
