Got this beauty in the mail: Also this may be my favorite death metal release of the year (but I don’t listen to much new DM so take that for what it’s worth):
new Rivers of Nihil album is coming out Dan Seagrave did their art again, really looking forward to this one.
Great drummer by any standard. Slipknot is what the are, but I loved The Subliminal Verses when it came out
Some upcoming new releases have me pretty excited: new Hooded Menace: these guys have a great take on death/doom, and the new album has speedier elements from 80s metal. The singles I’ve heard sound incredible. Aorlhac, melodic black metal from France (Occitan, specifically). I thought their last two albums were incredible and some of the best examples of this style you can get. Lyrics are about medieval French/Occitan history, which is pretty cool.
This bothers me way more than it should. One day I'd like to meet one of these twits that thinks Flame was anywhere close to Awakening. If anything Lost Horizon should be pretending Flame never happened like Pantera does their first 4 albums.
Never been huge on power metal but does anyone remember the one-off album/project from Andreas Hedlund of Gothic/Power Metal — HAVAYOTH from like 99/00? I remember the album being pretty solid
Hearing now that Mayhem, Satyricon, Mgla are off the Psycho Las Vegas lineup because of travel restrictions. Emperor, Watain likely to follow. Still going, but man this blows.
It’s awesome. Haven’t been able to get into their earlier stuff, but that one has some excellent songs.
I have a new candidate for one of the best metal albums of the year — this shit rules. Proggy, symphonic, dungeon-synthy black metal. I couldn’t pick a favorite track to post but we’ll go with this one (the 3 min mark is so good):
I’m sure there are probably some fans of psyche/stoner doom but is anyone interested in heavy psyche here?
Also if anyone lives in Austin, I’m jealous, because Eastern Front Records just opened their store there
It’s the guy who runs the Nuclear War Now! label. It’s his brick and mortar store. He’s Japanese I believe
Kanonenfieber - Menschenmhle pretty sick record, black metal with some slower death/doom parts. one man concept band about WWI, from Germany. seen this on a few AOTY lists. my nsbm radar was twitching a bit, but so far diligence indicates they're safe. sad state of affairs where i have to Google “[band name] + nsbm” every time i find a new band, but here we are.
so the Psycho Las Vegas lineup has changed pretty dramatically, since all of the European bands (Emperor, Watain, Satyricon, Mayhem) can't travel due to Delta variant concerns. i'm pretty disappointed not to be seeing all these legends of black metal, but they made some later additions (Mastodon, Knocked Loose, Goatwhore, Deafheaven) that are pretty solid. Spoiler: Line Up
I’m sure it was mentioned in here but the new Panopticon is prettyyyyy good. the track Dead Loons fucking GOES.
yeah that’s a great album. Moth Eaten Soul is as heavy as they’ve ever been. the production drives me crazy though. there are so many great riffs, and they’re just buried in the mud of the mix.
HoB bringing the heat with Drab Majesty, Exhorder, King Dude, Profanatica, Eyehategod, Repulsion, Immolation
that's definitely a good run. i'm partial to Primitive Man > Pig Destroyer > Dying Fetus > Cannibal Corpse, all back-to-back, all outside at the hotel pool. just unrelenting heaviness. going to be hilarious watching people mosh in the water.
no clue how they do at festivals but mastodon in a 1400 person venue in 2014 is still the best live band i've seen fwiw. they were super tight in the way that you would hope to hear from a band that had toured relentlessly for like 15 years at that point.
Top 5 live performances you’ve seen? For the sake of the thread I guess keep it to Metal no order and probably not definitive because I’m trying to remember all the shows but — Enslaved (2000) Marilyn Manson (1996) ISIS (2008) Cephalic Carnage + Acid Bath (2000) King Crimson (2007)
Rage Against the Machine (2007) At The Gates (2008) ISIS (2010) Behemoth, At The Gates, Wolves in the Throne Room (2018) Watain (2018) honorable mention: Rivers of Nihil (2019)
Jealous of that Enslaved 2000-era show. They are one of my favorite bands, but some of their newer albums are just duds for me. I've seen them twice more recently and I usually like about 50% of stuff in the setlist.
burnttatertot I finally found another good Italian band. HM-2 riffs for days, songs about zombies. what’s not to love?
