The new guidance on family history (as best I can recall) is if you have a first degree relative who has had colon polyps or colon cancer, you should get checked at age 10 years prior to when the relative’s condition diagnosed/discovered. Ex., if your dad was diagnosed with colon cancer at 43, you get a colonoscopy at 33.
Just got out, that 5-10 secs after the drug kicked in was great. Everything came back clear. Had cracker barrel afterwards and it was great. I would probably eat a little better and take miralax couple days before. Apparently after I came to in recovery, they asked me how I felt and all I said was "I'm fucked up and I hope I didn't say anything embarrassing" which they said I didn't. With family history, he wants me back every 3 years. 7/10 would recommend especially with a family history
I'm on the 5 year plan with family and personal history. Have had 4-5 of these things. Hopefully they make the prep taste better by 2028, but otherwise it really isn't terrible. It's unbelievable how fast that sedative knocks you out.
Don’t even sweat it. If someone in recovery can’t see the humor in things they won’t stay in recovery.
I’ll tell this story not to alarm future colonoscopy patients in this thread, but to increase awareness about the “prep” phase. Do not take the prep lightly, ask your GI about what you’re allowed to drink and what they recommend. Ask about how it should go and what to do if it’s not going well. Go into it with a plan. My dad did the two stage prep three weeks ago and he nearly died. His sodium level is usually on the lower side due to a genetic thing. He took the first part fine, but only replenished himself with water. At 5 am he started the second phase and began vomiting. Quickly turned into bad convulsions and confusion. Ambulance got him to the hospital where he had a seizure and had to be resuscitated. Blood panel comes back and his sodium is down to 117 (I guess 135 where he normally stays which is considered low). So off he goes to the neuroscience IC because his cognitive ability was really impaired. They slowly got his sodium, potassium, and magnesium up and he was completely fine in 36 hours.
Damn that’s crazy, glad he’s ok. Not to the same extreme but my aunt who is in her late 50s was given some big pills for her prep which she had concerns about because she’s pretty thin. She passed out going to the bathroom in the middle of the night and broke her nose. Still went through with the colonoscopy a few hours later and got a good report. It was a couple months ago so she’s still dealing with it.
I came awful close to passing out the night before. Walls closing in and super light headed. Called the doc and said to chug some pedialyte. I’m confident I had been drinking at least three times the amount of water they recommended
Have one at 10:45 tomorrow, start the prep this afternoon, I’m doing the Sutab pills, anyone have experience with those? Got some strained soup/broth on deck
Big day tomorrow. Drove home from Fayetteville mad af at our shitty team hungover and starving daughter ate Wendy’s in the car and I wanted the world to end, currently shitting my brains out. Being old sucks
My doctor friend told me dipping is okay and suppresses your appetite so I’m doing that and will likely vomit
my 2nd time. Both times have done the liquid sodium/potassium/magnesium sulfate mixed with white grape juice heavily drinking and will probably eat a gummy at some point
God dammit 1 polyp have to do it again in 5 years Also my neighbor was the anesthetist, he probably saw my butthole
Destroyed some breakfast, hit weed vape and drinking by pool tbh it’s a wonderful Monday fuck you Garfield
On a serious note anyone on the fence do it. Tmb is old now. My dad had 2 friends friends die under 60 bc they never got their dirt star evaluated. Prep sucks but you can get drunk and high
Just out, wife’s driving me home, bout to get some grub. 1 polyp, but said they thought it should be good.
Just laughed at myself going back through this thread to confirm when mine was so I know when to schedule the next one
usually not a good idea after the drugs they give you but I had a few beers when I did it Wednesday and was fine. It can cause a drop in blood pressure. Just do not over do it and you should be fine. I was not asleep during it, I guess they do it differently up here. I saw my ass from up close as I could see the what was going on as the camera was balls deep inside my ass. really not a big deal and probably a good thing that you clean your intestines. I might do the prep or half the prep yearly if it is healthy.
I think there's something about the color of liquids you can drink. Something like no red liquids or something?
the only thing i've learned from this thread is yalls doctors do a terrible job of explaining what to do/what not to do/what to eat or drink/what not to eat or drink
4. Why Can’t The Liquids I Drink Be Red, Purple, or Blue? Drinks that contain red, purple, or blue coloring can stain the walls of your colon. During your colonoscopy, these stains can interfere with the test and look like blood or other abnormalities. To ensure you get accurate results, physicians ask that you avoid drinks with certain coloring during your colonoscopy prep. https://fightcolorectalcancer.org/b...CLA Health, there, due to the colonoscopy prep.
my doctor is awesome and has zero input on my sloppiness I prep correctly and drink heavily, “clean” both times
I personally did not drink or gummy after mine. Something about my unknowns of anesthesia gives me the heebie-jeebies
I’m not proud of this stance btw, just posting thru it bc I’m scared my wife is mad at me and don’t want to go back inside
I'm getting probed in a few hours. The good news is that I haven't weighed under 170 in several years and I just broke through that barrier. When I get done today, I want to eat everything. I've had nothing but water for two days.
Have to get one every 5 years because of family history. Don’t mind the prep because I immediately get on the scale, see that I lost 5 pounds and feel accomplished.
I stopped by short order breakfast spot on way home and had eggs over easy, crispy bacon, crispy hashbrowns & wheat toast That plate was clean after
The two I’ve done have been early morning and I crush breakfast afterwards. French toast, bacon, hash browns.
Also have done 2, both times asked for first appointment on Monday. I don't see how people do afternoon appointments
